0:38, that’s probably my number one issue with the sequel trilogy as well. I found the first movie too similar to the first movie but I thought Ren killing Han Solo could mean that they wouldn’t recycle Vader’s redemption with Ren (which would feel more like a gimmick than a good narrative choice) and Ren’s backstory in The Last Jedi made a redemptive arc more likely so I was relieved that Ren only killed Snoke to seize power for himself because it meant the movies would keep Ren a villain instead of doing something dumb like recycle Vader’s redemptive arc. Then Rise of Skywalker negated Palpatine’s death so they could use it to recycle Vader’s redemptive arc on Ren. I don’t hate the movies but that was a terrible narrative decision
Couldn't agree more it was a bad decision. The movies really suffered from a lack of a clear, consistent vision. And to be honest Kylo didn't really do enough to redeem himself considering all the bad things he did.
I really like your rewrite, it's quite different and more specific and realistic than other things I've read! It's funny the first time i watched force awakens i hated kylo ren but then started liking him from last jedi onwards and now he's my favourite character in the sequel trilogy!
Quite a good analysis with a different perspective I haven't come across before, also liked the chapter breakdown in the description; makes it easier to go back and listen to your points of interest
In my opinion Kylo should’ve survived episode 9 instead of Rey and stray through the galaxy, trying to atone for his sins. It would be a redemption story with less lightsaber and force. Like how the madalorian tells a very relatable story.
They didn't have a story plan for what would happen after Ep7 and appointed different directors for each film, with completely different visions, narratively fighting each other. That's how bad Disney Star Wars is run
Very true and it really shows in the mess the trilogy ended up being. I'm of the opinion it's always better to stick to a single vision, even if it's not necessarily the best one, rather than trying to constantly change back and forth. Crazy how billion dollar franchises can be run like Disney run theirs.
What you've done is really unique and different to other complaints about the trilogy I've heard. I like the option of fixing Kylo Ren, overall great video!
4:04, in the first movie, to be like his maternal grandfather Darth Vader. In the second movie, Snoke’s respect/control of Rey/power. In the third movie, unclear
ur rewrite is nice and ai understood it well enough. haven't seen 9. this just making me think about how much influence all the overrated hate for prequels possibly just ended up creating something much worse. Instead of making inspired and new content with an array of interesting characters (Andor for example) they try to take all the mystery, the world-building, therefore the depth, and even badmouth its legacy and source material, downright retconning all the hard work and love that authors and artists put in, a soulless cardboard cutout of something that once belonged to lovers of sci fi fantasy. Now by making it "all-inclusive" as if it was ever made to shun anyone rather than out of pure enjoyment and heart from the creator. Yes the new canon has people who care but when they are milking characters to appease a shallow desire it really shows at least for those who loved everything ore-retcon. every opportunity matters to talk about this, everything happening now in the film and gaming industry relating to this is an undead horse that can never be beaten too far even when all is dust.
Well said. A real sad and frustrating thing I see with modern franchises is treating the previous material and fans like garbage to force in their own "modern" vision. I'm worried for my favourite franchises being adapted by Hollywood because I know they'll be ruined lol.
??? I don’t think you understood the films at all. Ren’s motivation in TFA was to complete what his grandfather started. Which was to unite the Galaxy. In TLJ he tells Rey to ‘let the past die’ (ie. Let go of old ways) and create a new government. He asks her to join him in creating this new government. Then in TROS, he plans to go along with Palpatine to get access to his ships and resources. Kill Palpatine (with the help of Rey) and rule the galaxy. How did you seriously miss or not all of this? It seems to be more of a case of not that the films were badly written. But you didn’t pay attention.
Actually I think I mentioned all of these individual motivations, but the point I was making is that his motivations shift rapidly without any natural bridge or evolution to explain why. His motivations are driven by the script rather than by a natural character progression or arc.
@@MediaRetrospective-sb2ptNo his motivations didn't shift. they were the same from the start to finish what his grandfather started and unite the galaxy. Everything he did all the designs he made were to that end and dealing or reacting to situations as they occurred. Something used by powerful military commander has used from Alexander the Great to Napoleon.
I really like the concrete example instead of abstract advice most postings give.
Thank you, yeah I like to think / hope people will find the videos useful either for writing their own stories or just enjoying other works.

That's funny to hear you hated him, I liked him from the start but it's true he's pretty evil at the beginning. Glad you liked it though!

Thanks appreciate it!
Interesting rewrite, great video to watch
Thanks glad you enjoyed it!

I love that! Then we could have gotten a kylo ren/Ben solo TV show that would have been great
This is an awesome idea I love it. I wish they'd done this, it would have been such a cool direction to take the series in.
That's boring. That's also not what he was meant for.

Yep I think this tracks. But it's strange how quickly it shifts to such different motivations without a natural bridge.
@ Definitely
Also like the new take on Reylo!
