Thanks. I agree. That is why I mentioned the 40 % markup from T.G. & Y. Inflation would make that right I’m sure. Have to figure in other costs like Fees too.
Stumbled across this video. As a journal user, potential purchaser I would never pay more than AUD$20-$30 for a junk journal. This is way short of your final price, which i assume is in USD? I don't care how amazing or detailed it is...i just don't ascribe that much value to this item. This is why I make my own, that way i get what i want, its unique and waaaaay cheaper than what you buy them for, and yes, I'm excluding my time in this analysis. Imho, this is a niche product you're never going to make a living from...you make them because you like making them, and if someone gives you some money for them, great. Edit. In case you're wondering, I'm an accountant by day (mixed media weirdo by night 😉) so I have knowledge and experience in costing items. 40% markup on costs excluding item though seems reasonable for something that's a side hustle. But given how saturated the market is, you need to have a USP (unique selling point) in order to justify this mark-up. I could go on but no-one wants a business and accounting lesson on a craft RUclips page 😅
Thanks for your input. I appreciate and value all comments. I have an accounting background too. Thanks so much for watching. So many things to consider and I guess that is why we are all different.
I just found your channel, and whether you're known or not, this journal is exquisite and worth the $100! As a junk journal maker, I can only imagine the time it took you to make this. Thanx for spelling out your pricing, however, I feel that you undervalued things, like your fabric/tassel, which seems mor lik $5, or the tim holtz stuff, which is costly. That little spine ring, probably more like a dollar. But if you're charging $100, why bother with the nickel and dime strategy? Would you then price it at $114? Asking for a friend 😁
Welcome and thanks for your feedback! It is always a balancing act of what is reasonable and what people are willing to pay. I did this on the fly without looking at my costs. So I suggest you truly do the work first. I do see your point. I probably under priced it a bit. The spine thing is a knock off and I have no idea how much it cost, but I think it was more like $.25. I just want to make sure I don't under price, which so many people do I feel. Many don't cover their cost by guessing totally, and that was my point of the video. And I guess, yes, I would price it for $114 + shipping and packing material for example. Hope that helps.
Thank you for this video. I ask this all the time and actually haven't sold any because i don't know how to price them. Also...your journal is AMAZING! I've never seen anything made like that before. Have you or will you show us how you made it?
Excellent video! Thank you!! Maybe a way to cut a lot of time out of this process is when you buy things, keep a spread sheet of what it costs per item. What I mean is, when you buy say eyelets, keep track of what you paid per item. List it in the spread sheet as say $6.00 per pack of 30 eyelets, they cost .20 cents each. A pack of 50 sheets of card stock in $6.00, each sheet cost .12 cents each. Then just keep a tally of how much of each item you used. A skein of eyelash trim cost $4.00 each, and I used1 yard. There will still be a lot of what you are showing here, but it should cut it down substantially. A yard of fabric cost $13.00 a yard, I just used about 3/4 of a yard making a lap book. The hard part is how much is your time worth? I have been a quilter for over 40 years now and there is no way I would sell any of my quilts. Nobody would pay what they are worth. My brother asked me to make him a hunting themes quilt for his bed. I did and he offered to pay for it, I told him no. Money did not come easy for him and that quilt cost me $600.00 just to make it. That did not include a minute of my time. I find it very hard to sell things I have made. I have not made any journals yet that I would sell, but maybe someday.
@@lisawagner6076 That is what I did except on paper. Thanks for watching! We do many things for our family and trust me they have no idea the work and money it takes to do things. I’m glad you like it.
This is interesting. Most of my supplies come from our local thrift store. 20 sheets for a dollar, buttone, ribbons, twine, cloth. The only thing I pay for is magazines for fancy cuts, and those I can get at thrift store. I am thinking to price by signature. What do you think??
Thanks for watching. Do you mean you are making different size journals with signatures and want to price them by size? I would make sure to cost everything, and don’t forget shipping, fees and other things like packing and taxes.
@JJwithJoy yes. Some journals have 5 signatures, and others are quick builds with just 1 signature. I was thinking $10 per signature, then extra for hard cover journals opposed to card stock covers.
@@PDoonan even if you get your items from a thrift shop they have a value in my opinion of somewhere between what you paid and what is priced as new. Without seeing your journals I couldn't guess at $10/signature. Consider all factors and cost first. If they are all the same, figure the cost of one and multiply by how many. Don't forget shipping, taxes, and fees like if sold on Etsy, packing materials to ship etc.
I was understanding your thoughts until the end. I got the cost. Then mark up of 40%, and then you just jumped to $100. How did you get to that? This is a difficult topic! Your journal is gorgeous!
@@camillemcintosh7765 Thanks for watching. Great point. It does depend on what you want to do. I usually add I. Cost for the journal on my shop. But, if I sell outright, I charge.
I am so over the moon in love about your journal. Many lovely greetings from Dresden in Germany. Love Doris and here is my subscribe for you.
Thank you so much! I appreciate you watching! I've had requests to make one live. So, it is on my to do list. Watch for it! I did have all fabric to start with. I did sew papers onto the fabric. I did an actual flip-through of this journal close up. I think I have it to pop up after this video. Glad you enjoyed it! Much love!
I think I would charge double the cost of materials. I have made and sold different crafts over the years and I always went double unless you went less on something big. I always sold at craft fairs.
Thanks for sharing your experience. I find it very helpful when setting prices. It probably works out to the 40% I mentioned. It’s an easy way for sure. I appreciate you watching!
Thanks for watching! You must take a look at the cost first. Don't forget shipping/packing and any fees (allow for discounts-that will help with the 40% markup). That will give you a cost. From there you know to not go under it when you sell it. Then, look over it all as a whole and see how it compares to others work in that price range. If you feel your work is superior to others in the same price range, then, I feel you can account for some of your time. That is how I came up with $100.
Yes, most likely it’s worth a bunch…but I didn’t follow the math. Marking $14.15 up 40% equals ( 40% of 14.15. = about $5.65 and $14.15 + $5.65= about $20) then I don’t really understand how you got to $100, even though I agree. Just wondering not complaining at all. Probably because you just know from experience is my guess. 😊
Thanks for watching! I believe I said look at it overall and see if the work was superior or lacking. I did forget to mention fees if you sell on Etsy or like. Don’t forget shipping. It also depends if you are known or a beginner. That is how.
Interesting. Please tell me more about your culture. Are junk journals you write in popular in Italy? These type of journals are the desired here in US. The more work, the more desired.
you were pretty close. the formula is your cost, then double that amount, then double that amount, then double that amount. this covers cost, time and overhead. at least thats what i learned. yours came to 113.20,
I think this formula is great! The first doubling of the initial cost is profit (~25% profit which is a common percentage to use) the second doubling is overhead and the third doubling is labor. True for many journal makers that would put your hourly rate at pennies per hour, BUT it could give you somethings to think about to make better use of your time. THANK YOU FOR THIS CONTRIBUTION!
That’s way way way too time consuming and complicated. Once you have a following and are known for your journals the price will be anywhere from 85$-150$ for a decent to above average journal maker. No need to itemize every morsel. Holy cow. This means you’re prolly a novice at this.
Thank you for watching! It's important to know your costs to make a good profit margin, any good business person will tell you the same. I do appreciate your feedback.
If you’re counting every penny in “supplies” why wd you not count your time? Time is money. That’s the most important factor in these as they’re usually ridiculously time-intensive. It’s like any art. I’ve seen shite journals sell for big money and decent ones sit.
Wow! Your journal is really something! I love it! People pay a lot for things they love! Your journal is an art journal!! It may not be nearly as big of some of the journals being made today, but there’s no comparison! Even a 4-signature journal that’s just paper can’t hold a candle to yours!! Which reminds me that you have more money wrapped up in lots of supplies, so I would say your overhead is higher than someone who’s making a more traditional journal and primarily relying on scrapbook or digital papers. Every technique we have involves specialized equipment: die-cutting machines, dies, inks, glues & adhesives, even the daubers to apply inks. I think that the number of techniques used, demand a higher price. It’s been fascinating to see the pages in your journal, it is in a class of its own! Thank you for sharing your thoughts with us!
Hello, new subscriber here 😊 this journal is absolutely beautiful 😍 thank you for sharing your insights on pricing, that was really really helpful 😊
@@Vanessa_Papillon thanks so much! Glad it is helpful.
Not TG&Y! I haven't heard that name in ages. 😊 Your journal is lovely.
@@Readeropolis lol. Thanks so much! I appreciate you watching!
You are welcome! At some point I will. I have Christmas fun coming next though. I appreciate you watching!
Thank you for watching. I considered the work and the market and supply and demand.
merci pour ce partage, très intéressant car je ne sais pas comment calculer les album que je confectionne. belle journée à vous. isabelle
You are so welcome! Thank you for watching.
Thank you for this video. I have been wondering what to charge for my journals. Do you include shipping or do you charge separately?
Much love!
Where do you buy 10 cent charms?
Big bags from Temu. Some are $.06/ ea and others from Hobby Lobby on sale are up to $.15. That is why you have to do the math on what you purchase.
I'm confused about how you got from approximately $20 (after 40% markup from $14) to about $100? Thanks
@@JJwithJoy thank you again!
It is a nice journal and I don't want to be too critical, but there is very little journaling space which I don't understand really.
There are different journals. This would be a nice ‘table’ journal. An interest piece.
Thanks for watching!
Whoever buys this stuff? In Italy nobody. I'm pretty sure. Unfortunately.
Interesting. Please tell me more about your culture. Are junk journals you write in popular in Italy? These type of journals are the desired here in US. The more work, the more desired.
you were pretty close. the formula is your cost, then double that amount, then double that amount, then double that amount. this covers cost, time and overhead. at least thats what i learned. yours came to 113.20,
Interesting! I’ve never heard that. Thanks for your input!
New subscriber and journal maker. This was very valuable information. Your journal is so different and beautiful. Thank you for sharing. ❤
@@alsoarty1 thank you and welcome to our world!
@@differenttakethanmost I agree but I’ve found most won’t pay for the amount of time it takes.
It’s gorgeous and so much work was put into it but where do you journal?
@@pamschueler4083there is only a little room for journaling. All journals aren’t to journal in.
@@JJwithJoy thank you for your quick reply. 😊
It’s been enlightening for me! Erica❤ I have subscribed, I know I will enjoy learning more about you & your work! ❤
