O'Heron and her team are my heroes. The respect for their opponents, the sportsmanship, the lessons of honor and fairness and, and, and. This coach and the team deserve to be in the spotlight. Great coach, great players GREAT AMERICANS.
Great coach and players! During high school in the 60's we were playing against a smaller school for their Homecoming Football game. They only had 13 players, so most of them were playing offense and defense both! Our coach saw an opportunity to give our 2nd string players some game time, so they started the game. We were ahead by 28 to zero at the half and it was clear the opposing team was exhausted. At the halftime each team got on their respective bus (their field wasn't near their school) and as our coach gave a pep talk, we could hear the opposing coach screaming at his team! Then we heard him say he was done with them and he just left them there. So, when the 2nd half started they didn't have a coach. Our coach got us all together and asked if we'd mind if the other team won. Unanimously we said "Let 'em win!" With that we played the 2nd half missing tackles and fumbling balls, but trying to not look obvious. We could hear the other team's parents cheering them on and we knew we were doing the right thing! They "beat" us by 7 points at the finish and you would've thought they'd won the Super Bowl! After the game as all the players were shaking hands they let us know they appreciated what we did and that's when we found out that game was their first win in over 3 years! I had to leave the field because something got in my eyes and was making them water!
At first I thought this video was going to be about a team dogging it and letting a player make an uncontested shot. That's not sportsmanship. I'm pleasantly surprised. Now this is sportsmanship. Great job by the coach.
Many years ago the local team beat another team 88 to 6. Our head coach didn't even know what the score was because he always coached like he was behind. After the game he went into the other teams dressing room and apologized. An assistant coach was designated to keep him informed any time he got 20 points ahead so he would be sure to empty his bench and make it more fun for both teams.
1:42 It's great that the school principal supported the decision of the team's coach, who not only taught her students a lesson; she gave it to all of us!
Girls basketball is boring to watch, this would’ve been extremely difficult to watch, Boring. That being said definitely good sportsmanship & worth the boredom.
I coached girl's travel basketball for a few years. I would like to think I would have done the same thing. Congrats to the girls playing and both coaches.
This actually isn't all that uncommon! I see it all the time with my Granddaughters softball teams and some of the teams they play, and it's very nice to see!
@@RobertXPhotography What youth sports should be teaching is what happened here, winning isn't everything and having compassion for your peers is a very good thing to experience and learn.......pay attention, you may not be too old or too far gone to learn and understand that!
@@randallmarsh1187 Winning isn't everything? Let me guess.. you're not a competitive person are you? Guessing you've never been in a team sport maybe? WINNING IS EVERYTHING! Because if you don't.. tomorrow you'll face off with someone who will.
@@RobertXPhotography No, winning isn't everything! Being a good sport and sportsmanship is what should be taught and what we saw in that video and what I've seen on my Grand daughters softball teams! Those girls were there to have fun and the winning was secondary! You're attitude is exactly why this country is so fucked up right now, because you MAGAts believe winning is everything no matter the cost. That teaches poor sportsmanship and is why people can't accept losing anymore, so they must lie and blame it on someone else!
Looks like the girls had a good time playing ball. That's what it's all about, it is a fabulous game. Would do anything if I could get my old body to make one more decent run!
Oh yeah! Years ago (I'm 80 now) when my kids were inn Little League I was a volunteer umpire. Yes, I got some slack from the teams after a "questionable" call, but the real b.s. came from the dear loving parents.
1. Shouldn't a high school league have rules about what to do if a team cannot field a full roster? 2. If you have no players on your bench maybe you shouldn't be committing fouls?
My dad told me the story when he coached girls basketball and his opponent got down to four players. He tried to bench one of his players to make it an even four-on-four but the referee wouldn't let him.
This is WHY High school sports are better than AAU, club, travel ball, academies, etc. Overall, high school sports see the bigger picture and have better priorities than any other organizational sports.
Unfortunately, Coach O'Heron is a dinosaur. We've forgotten how high school sports and winning is one very small chapter in your life. Coach made an impact even though it's a small chapter.
Am I the only person that sees a team being rewarded for playing unfairly? If they didn't want their team to be short handed, they should not have committed so many fouls. You are literally telling them that they can behave however they want and someone else will pay the price for you. It's commendable to create a fair game of the opposing team is plagued with illness and injury, but if they are breaking the rules and get removed, you should be teaching them better basketball skills instead of reinforcing bad behavior.
Liberal life lesson #1...When your competitor gets an advantage, you should expect your competitor to give up said advantage to keep things "fair". Good luck in real life girls.
Notice this shit only happens to girls. "Awww.. it's not fair for our team to have an advantage. Let's make it easier for them." What are we teaching these young women??
Should have played 5 and crushed them. Sometimes life isn’t fair and you have to play with the cards delt to you and try and overcome. That would have been a better life lesson than we all need to be equal.
Yes, that was a great move by the coach. But technically isn't that against the rules? If you have 5 healthy and eligible players aren't you required, by rule, to play with 5.
I played basketball and football in high school and played basketball at a division 1 school in college years ago. In high school we played a team that was small and then had several players foul out. They played with 4 and we played with 5. Coach O'Heron deserves to be coach of the year for about the next 10 years. Awesome job, Coach!
This was stupid. What lesson did they learn? No one is going to level the playing field for you in the real world.
