    I hear you on the manual reel mower. It is very taxing since I'm always going for the perfect cut with multiple passes. Love the look afterwards however I only have about 1 or 2 days to enjoy and then back at it again.

    Lawns looking good! Mine is finally starting to get back in shape as well. I appreciate your honest simple approach, it's great for people with kids who don't have a lot of free cash for the designer chemicals. Just trying to keep it properly watered hurts when the water bill comes!!! Looking forward to your video on manual watering. I am still trying to figure mine out, I currently use a rain train in the back, an impact sprinkler in the front & hand water the sides. I am wanting to pick up a (Rain Bird LG3HE In-Ground Impact Sprinkler with Click-N-Go Hose Connect) about 40 dollars on Amazon. If it works well I might be able to slowly add a couple every now & then to get the same coverage as a complete in ground system.
    Thanks for this update, I currently use a rotary mower but have been interested in the reel mower myself but my yard isn't super level so I was hesitant to even try it. I work off a twice a week system now Saturday & Wednesday just not sure about going to 3 with the Oklahoma heat coming. Does it take that much longer for you to reel mow compared to the rotary? Seems to me the shorter it is the easier it might water as well, do you have an opinion on that? Thanks!

    • @BudgetLawns
      @BudgetLawns  4 года назад +1

      Thank you. I really appreciate those comments. I'm glad to hear my intentions for this channel are coming across. I feel ya on the water bill. That Oklahoma and my Arkansas summer heat make it tough! The watering video will be out soon. I'm spreading some sand this week, so I'll have to do some extra watering which will allow me to shoot that vid. Thanks for your patience. Keep me posted on those sprinklers you're looking at. I hope those make it easier on ya.
      Honestly, it does take me longer to reel mow. I've always double cut, whether rotary or reel. But with the reel, it's more physically demanding, so I have to stop and take more water breaks to stay safe in the heat. When it's hot, it's definitely more difficult. Plus it does add that extra cut or 2 a week. As far as watering it goes...when it's shorter there's less grass to shade the soil, so it dries out faster on the surface. Another reason to go from .75" to 1". Hope this helps! Thanks again!

    Great video! I have the lawn version of a mullet. The front is short and the back is long. I use the reel on the front (about 4K sq ft) and a rider on the back (abt a 1/2 acre).

      Thanks, Skip! Haha, I like that. I may need a lawn mullet too. I've only got 4k sqft, but even in the heat it's brutal manual mowing. And I don't blame ya. I'd be riding that 1/2 acre too. There's a fine line between enjoying it and it turning into work. I appreciate ya watching!

I know it's far more expensive per application than buying a gallon of T-Nex, but let's face it, most of us don't have the cash laying around to pay the $160 upfront for longterm savings. Might be something I try next season as a test for folks watching. Thanks for tuning in to my vids. I really appreciate it!

    Everyone is catching the reel mowing bug lately 😁. I’ve been doing it since last year with my manual push reel mower. But I still fire up the ol Honda every once in a while. You definitely still need both. Good for cleaning up the lawn after a storm blows sticks and leaves all over, or taking care of a bit of over grown grass if you don’t get out to mow every day. Reel mowing I’ve found that I’m out there every two days to maintain the height I want. Otherwise trying to push a reel mower through overgrown grass just sucks.

    • @BudgetLawns
      @BudgetLawns  4 года назад +1

      Yup definitely catching on especially if you've got bermuda grass and a bumpy lawn like me. The rotary only allowed me to go so low without scalping. This little manual reel lets me go down to .75 with no scalping...pretty awesome. Yeah, you're right there. Have to have both. Still use the rotary for cleanups and scalps. Appreciate your comment!

  • @joshuab738
    @joshuab738 4 года назад +1

    Good video. If you don't want to go low ( < 1" hoc), don't go to reel. Reel mowers do not cut well high. I happy that someone says that, since so many people always just talks about the pros of reel mowing. I used a reel for my northeast lawn (1.5 -- 2" hoc) for years just because I did not have the room to store a rotary mower. They do not have a very clean cut high (yes, I had it sharpen and adjusted correctly -- it is just hard not to put it down so the bedknife can still hit it). I think that is one of the reason they went out of trend with the introduction of rotary -- lots of people with rye, KBG, etc not having a clean cut. Now that I moved south and have hybrid Bermuda, I still use my manual reel mower for some little trimming on a hill, this really bumpy strip between the sidewalk and road, or on fresh sod/sprigs. However, I love my rotary ,and I am keeping my hoc at ~1.25", and I don't plan to go lower. I am leveling as I go with sand and top soil when I find places that my rotary mower hit (don't have the budget this year to do a full sand level -- plan on next year).

    • @BudgetLawns
      @BudgetLawns  4 года назад

      Thank you! And BINGO! Well said. You've got it figured out. I figure the decision really only comes down to the 2 questions I pose. Too many other people overcomplicate things. We're just talking about grass here...no reason to overthink it. Always great to hear from folks like you who share a lot of the same mindset. I appreciate you watching and your comments. Makes this fun!

    • @BudgetLawns
      @BudgetLawns  4 года назад

      I've done a couple other videos breaking down the 7 blade and why I got it. Long story short, more blades are better for bermuda as it grows very thick and dense if cared for properly. With fewer blades, you increase the chance of washboarding as it will have a tougher time getting through the turf easily. I would definitely go for the 7. I'm super pleased! Thanks for the support!

  • @narlycat

    I got me an Earthwise 20" 5 blade reel mower because I have to mow a steep hillside overlooking a lake. It's too steep for a riding lawn tractor, and I've gone through 5 rotary gas powered push mowers in about 20 years. And I'm tired of not having a rotary motor not being able to start when I need to mow the grass. I wasted half a day trying to start my rotary every hour or so then I'd have to quit for a few more hours. Finally just before sunset it starts. My rotary mowers average lifespan is 3 to 4 years because like I said the hillside is pretty brutal on the machines. So I hope a reel mower can take the abuse, I hope it can defy gravity a lot better.

    • @BudgetLawns
      @BudgetLawns  4 года назад

      Wow, sounds like you've got your work cut out for ya on that hill. I hope that manual reel mower does the trick for ya. That's no fun to be messing with faulty rotary mowers. Keep me posted on how things go with the Earthwise. I appreciate ya watching and commenting!

    • @michaelb.8953
      @michaelb.8953 2 года назад +1

      Thanks for the review as for the first time I'm actually looking at a reel mower for my yard. Like you I have a really hilly yard with hard rocky clay for soil and I go through rotary mowers about every 3 to 4 years as it just beats the hell out of the mowers. My yard is about 0.4 acres and the huge hill in the back is about a 45 degree angle to the top up to about the roof line of my two story house, it's been my beast of hell every summer. A couple of times I've gotten a four wheel drive push mower up there, but it probably took a summer's worth of life out of it in the process. I just let the hill go to weeds which leaves the actual usable lawn to about 0.3 of an acre and I'm going to give a reel mower a try and let a professional landscaper worry about landscaping my backyard beast of hell, besides I'm tired of adding to my collection of defunct broken down lawnmowers every couple to few years.

      3/4 on common and hybrid. My back lawn is all hybrid but my front is a mix. The common can be trained to mow low but it will just go through some growing pains first. It's starting to look really good now. Eventually the blades don't grow as large and it adapts to the low HOC. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching and the question.
