    Nice product.

I'm super impressed. I made a diy version using a hot plate I bought on Aliexpress. It has been very useful, but the plate is only 120x70mm, which really limits its usefulness. For the price, this one looks much more interesting. Pretty sure I'm going to buy one.
For cleaning up rosin, 100% isopropanol, rather than the more typical 70%, seems to work well.

100%?? That is a good idea!
In that clip I used 91%. It worked well enough. After making a minor mess on it in that video I decided to pick up a $15 Japanese omelette pan that I will use to I pan-fry my boards. I expect that it will do better at reducing the thermal shock as I remove it from the plate.
My real hope is that this will make my first attempts at soldering on a BGA go more smoothly than other ideas that I have been mulling.

@@JohnsBasement Good idea John. One problem with a hot plate, particularly a large one, is: how to remove the pcb relatively quickly (so as not cook it), without inadvertently jolting it and spraying parts all over the floor. I was imagining a small 3mm sheet of aluminum, but a pan might be just the thing.
I placed an order by the way ... it should arrive by the weekend ;-)

Not sure if it was RUclips or your video, but the audio was about 5 seconds ahead of the video. Otherwise a nice looking hot plate.

Yeah. I had a bit of trouble with the video that I shot with my phone. 😕

Can you use aluminum paper on the surface to keep it clean?

    • @JohnsBasement
      @JohnsBasement  Год назад

After cleaning it, I had the same thought!.. that eventually evolved into the idea of using a small frying pan! I have yet to try it. It will obviously keep the plate clean. But I think it its mass will also help prevent thermal shock when I remove the PCB from the plate. -- I am certain to try a few different things in the up-coming months and share the good and the bad.

      @@JohnsBasement Thanks John.
How would one use it to solder on 2 sided board say SMT board, which has components on both sides?
I think the device is not too practical. I would use a regular heat gun, sold in automotive stores and other hardware stores, in conjunction with soldering hot air.
To remove devices, I am thinking of connecting the board to a drill and rotate it real fast, inside a tube which is heated by hot air gun. Centrifugal force will spread the parts form board after the hot air has melted the solder and land them inside the tube. Therefore, we should find soft heat resistant material for inside of the tube. Probably the soft isolation material that used for water heater pipes are good candidate.
Thanks again for testing the product, so I do not spend money on it.

@@aduedc surface mount on two sides is done by adding a dot of glue to the parts on the bottom then they are placed on the board. Baking the board with infrared light is then used to perform the soldering.
Unsoldering with hot air with the pressure turned up will easily blow the SMT parts of the board... as long as they aren't also glued on.

Also, good for you. The cutting board crap in electronics channels has to go. I am sick of seeing them.

      What's 'cutting board' crap? 😬
You mean the cutting MATs? Yeah. I got mine for preventing metal stuff from gouging up my bench (like S-100 cabinets.) It is awful for soldering though.

@@JohnsBasement sorry, i mean the cutting mat i mean not board. 😀
I just get tired of seeing them grid cutting mats in all these youtube electronics channels. That silicone mat, definitely a step up! 👍 classy! 🤩
