- Who killed Max's best friend Safi? In this video, I explore the murder mystery of the new Life is Strange upcoming sequel title by DeckNine games and published by Square Enix, and try to speculate and analyse trailer footage to find out who the villain is! Since the game's announcement at the IGN summer games fest, we've been trying to breakdown the footage from gameplay, and see if we can unravel the mystery of Caledon University in the next Life is Strange game.

I know it probably won’t happen but I love the idea of a max who’s gone semi insane trying to find a timeline where Chloe and the bay both survive so for some reason she’s killing other maxes or their friends could create an interesting finale choice where you can finally let her go to her perfect world or kill her and go to it yourself

One thing though, Max can only jump through photos which depict her. She couldn't have jumped through a picture of the owl. The butterfly picture in LiS is "jumpable" because there is a reflection of Max on the bucket the butterfly rested on.
She might have used the photo before it to either let Safi take the call or not. When things start getting weird is actually after she photographs the moon not the owl.
I mean, her power could've evolved. We dont see Max exploring simultaneous alternate realities in LiS1.

I love how this clicked SO GOOD with me!!!! Cause I was thinking about the Polaroids max and can pick up and she even says they’re in HER hand writing but she didn’t take those pictures. I remember thinking “maybe it’s future you or some variant OF you leaving some kind of evidence or clues for herself” that and I always wondered about auto max being a mystery to me since it seems like sometimes she acts either completely different or slightly different. Even Chloe could tell it wasn’t REALLY max
Just had another thought! That photo of max seemed very intentional in my opinion. As if she WANTED to get caught? If she didn’t, why not destroy the evidence and make it a truly unsolvable crime even for max? Seemed intentional for max or auto max to travel TO that photo to get some kind of info from herself.
We're all forgetting there are two Max in Double Exposure, the one we play as and the one from the parallel reality
im pretty sure we will have a stand off between 2 maxes, one being actually the future max for motives we dont know yet but there is probably a much bigger issue at hand and to solve it safi had to die.
I actually feel like the apocalyptic event will be weirder than that. With Max jumping back and forth between realities the two might start clashing into each other later on like a time compression event. There is a scene where Amanda asks Max to be safe and whatever is going on outside behind Amanda looks like a lot of dark swirling wind.
I do think Safi dying is because of Max but more like transferring who got shot. There is a part where Max is walking up to where Safi is that looks like Max was the one who got shot. Around 15:55 in the extended gameplay if you pause there you can see red mist and what looks like the trajectory of a bullet going through Max. Safi seems fine until she touches her and there is a weird distortion happening before Safi falls over.

you might actually be onto something... if that is the case maybe the final choice of the game will be to either let Max die in that moment so safi lives or to sacrifice safi so max lives but that doesn't really make sense to me now as a final choice now that I actually think about it lol

A Brazilian fan talked about a similar theory in June and a fan page made a post on social media about it (asdeliciasdearcadiabay).
In the middle of July (day 15 to be more specific), the official Life is Strange profile on X posted a question for the fans to answer with their theories about DE. Another fan commented about an alternative version of Max from the alternative reality and they (the official account) just deleted the original post after that.
I don't know why they deleted the post on X, but this theory just makes a lot of sense.
Cool. Idk if I was the other fan you're talking about, but I've had some variant of an Asteroid Theory since LiS2, with modifications for Double Exposure since the reveal stream event. I swear if Daniel ends up involved in stopping the asteroid I'm going to be so smug with "I called it." 😂
Very interesting idea and very plausible. Although it would be interesting I would be slightly disappointed if Double Exposure had the same exact beats as LIS. It would really bring into question for me if this game was needed and if Max really needed to be brought up again. Ofc I love Max so it all in all will be a treat to be back in this world.
My theory about why max would k!ll safi is maybe that future max discovered that Safi did something horrible to someone special to her or the town so she goes back in time with the picture so that she can k!ll het before she does that so it never happens

I have a theory that Max will have to choose between "deleting" every timeline/alternate universe she has ever created or continue creating them. Sort of as a way to make her decide to put her power to rest again or accept the power.
I'm back here after watching the early access of the game.
The idea of an alternate reality Max killing Safi is honestly a great twist! The OG Devs didn't put much thought into Max's powers, how they work, ect. I think the whole Auto-Max stuff was created as a sort of band-aid fix to cover some of that up. But often times Max is shown kind of "Waking up" back into her proper timeline which'd almost make it seem as though she was just sleeping the whole time she was running around in other timelines lol.

I also think the reason her having headaches/falling unconscious after the snapshots the night Safi died is future Max coming back. The reason though I think was to find the killer. But she knows better than to change the course of the events after you know what... so she just goes back to see it, not prevent it. And the moment she takes the photo of the owl, future Max will go and try to see what happened, then she comes back to the same position so present Max does not suspect anything when she wakes up. And when she takes the photo of the moon, after Safi left, she did not faint but I think future Max still took control at that moment. Maybe she did so to tell something important to Moses idk. But I don't think some alternate Max murdered Safi unless there is some solid motivation behind. It couldn't be some petty revenge scheme for og Max. My guess is alternate Safi killed herself because why not lol
You just described the ending of episode two and what we find out I won’t say what but fans that have played it would know early access
This will end up in a similar outcome to life is strange 2 but if so I can imagine multiple endings (but hopefully none of them end up with Max dead)
I think one of the endings might be for Max to sacrifice herself, or create a timeline where she never meets/becomes close with Safi.
It would follow a character development similar to The Butterfly Effect movie, where the protagonist realizes that no matter how many times they jump through time to fix something, they always end up hurting someone they care about in some way.
As depressing as it sounds, it's what makes the most sense to me in her story, unless Deck Nine makes this into a fan service, and the story ends again with the dilemma of destroying a town to save a friend.

Both their deaths in those endings were devastating which is why I started again to ensure they don’t die plus I did my best to ensure Sean and Daniel kept their good relationships with Lyla, Chris, Cassidy, Finn and Jacob and Karen

This is actually a really good theory! I was skeptical at first but I think you might've hit the nail in the coffin in regards to what the plot will be about.
Now he just needs to add the bit about Daniel being key to stopping the Asteroid impact.

Personally, I REALLY hope Deck Nine won’t just recreate the dilemma from Life is Strange, since players already made this choice in the original game, so testing it yet again doesn’t really make much sense (even if Max has to play a more active role in the murder).
However, I can imagine that the concept of “Auto Max” will be explored (because really, what IS Alternate Max doing while our Max is jumping between realities?), and that Max herself will fear that she is involved somehow. But then the game will pull a twist on us, like another character with time travel powers that isn’t Max! At least I’d prefer that outcome ;)
Because really, what is to gain by making Max the villain of the game? Hasn’t she suffered enough from losing Chloe or Arcadia Bay? Just repeating the same message of the first game won’t do Double Exposure any favors, imo :-/ But hey, it’s not like anything is confirmed, so I hope the game manages to do something unique by NOT ruining Max’s life yet again ;)
there probably isnt someone new with time travel powers (lazy writing if there was). i like to think that the LiS world doesnt have multiple people with the same powers, someone is in charge of activating them in people and hopefully we will see a future game with that person because that would be a interesting concept.
@@K5ith In the gameplay stream, they do mention that the reason why Max got her powers plays a big role, if I remember correctly? Personally, I wouldn't mind another person with powers ^^

this game is so complicated. anything with time travel confuses me. i never even thought about it like this, this was so interesting!

I don't know if Max will be the villain but I'm almost certain that Safi is not the person we glimpse shortly before his murder

One thing that always got to me about the first game is the Prescotts. They were this wealthy powerful family who threaten max to back off then…. Nothing. They never came after of her so with this game taking place what if there finally ready to get revenge. First her friend.. then her
Brilliant. I've said it before on social media but the way you digged deep on the theory is brilliant. I have another theory for the final choice. Max has to decide to kill herself (or her alter self) or save Caledon university. That would be amazingly powerful.

Honestly. This theory sounds fun to mull over, but would be terrible as a continuation of Max's story...
I dont want Max to just become her own MCU villain wanting revenge on her alternate time-self. Max has already had the story of her using her powers having consequences, Max has already had a dire choice where she either has to sacrifice hundreds of people or Chloe. So much of us are wanting this to be so much more of a heartfelt story that deserves being a sequel in her life- And UNLESS they are pulling some trickery where, ultimately, this game's just a build up into another sequel or something... This title just seems more and more like it will just never amount to the names and faces it DOES use, while being completely cowardly in not using the one we already care about.
I dont really care about Safi. I dont care about these new characters the game will want us to. And these devs know that, they know the teasing theyre doing by leaving out integral character's to Max's story.
I really hope it’s not the ending of saving the college or saving safi it would be too much like the original original was a great game, but we don’t need a what if in the end like we did the first time

I don't think she murders her but you are correct in that future Max is clearly developing those photos that were taken and then temporarily going back in time when that photo was taken. Takes control of the body temporarily, but then it reverts back to Max of that timeline with no memory of the past few moments.
Imagine if Chloe was the killer, or Mr. Jefferson, out for revenge.

Sorry, for breaking your theory but I have a different theory. My theory comes from the first gameplay video which has been released. Seconds before the murder happens and Safi "dies", Max is walking after her. Max sees her standing in the snow alive. Then Max hears the shot. So Max recognizes "Safi" alive from a huge distance. When Max gets closer she sees Safi sitting on the bench and recognizes she is dead. Are you sure Safi isn't killing herself or Alter-Safi from another Timeline ?

Id prefer that than having "This guy is the murderer, hes going to jail now" ending, which wouldnt be a LiS ending, but you never know
It's not gonna end that way. Safi's murder is used for a bigger plot than just "who did it". Max using her powers again, maybe overusing them will cause another disaster or something similar to that to happen.

@@K5ith we are obviously getting to know people in the game, the first ep is mostly set up, so mostly getting to know the new people so it wouldn't be someone random anyway. Maybe it's someone with powers, maybe it's connected to some other timeline or something, whatever it is I'm sure it's gonna be great

Even tho we've seen this "auto-max" in max's neurotic episodes from time traveling much, I'd guess, I don't think she's real and there's only one max. It's everything a bit complex since time travel lol but I do not believe they'd add something absurd like max revenging on herself.
However, like you pointed out, that blackout moment will absolutely be a checkpoint for a decision we'll have to make later on, just like we had with multiples photos in Life is Strange. I obviously don't know what's going on, but I feel like we'll have to choose if we either kill her or not, or we'll use that blackout point to investigate further!
i’m beginning to think it may just be Max going back to find out what happened - there’s a scene in one of the later episodes where she’s clutching her head whilst looking at that photo of Safi, Moses and herself. I think you may be right!

My guts tell me that Safi is a villain and the start of all of Max power
i think in the final episode, we will rewind back to the moment where max passed out while taking the owl picture. then, we will kill safi (maybe safi asked us to kill her, or there's another reason) and booommmmm huge plot twist bla bla bla

it would also explain why we don't have our powers: AutoMax thinks she lost them, but really, she's going between two timelines Max created.

Unrelated but I’ve gone through all the current content we’ve seen and there’s a shot of what I assume is Max (and maybe Moses) creating a board on her wall with pictures, presumably investigating Safi’s murder
However there’s a specific shot of a hand putting up a picture of Safi on stage with a mic that’s been shown 3 times now, different each time.
Version 1 is Max putting up the picture, with a shot just before confirming it’s her and that she’s the only one there in the room
Version 2 is the exact same shot but with a different coloured (blue, not red) sleeve, it could just be a different outfit but idk why they’d re-record for that
Version 3 is interesting, it has a very minor colour grade with the blue sleeve but the picture being put up is different, it’s of Safi on stage but not in front of the same red curtains, a different background, pose and angle (could be the bar) with the caption “Safi Lakeport”
But even more interesting is the other photos that you can see in the wide shot with Max (the one that confirmed she was alone in version 1)
There are photos of nearly every character in the game except Moses, some of whom have captions. There are some of locations around the campus, and one of a street with the caption “Merida, Mexico”
But the most interesting is a photo of a large brown dog, with the caption “Chloe #2. Ocracoha”. That’s an island near North Carolina at the opposite side of the USA to Arcadia Bay with a small village, could this be where Chloe is? She’s settled with a dog if you save Arcadia bay? Why would she be on the suspect wall?
Max is obscuring the other photos, but I thought this was really interesting!
I’m gonna post a video soon rearranging all of the footage so far to hopefully recreate what the game could look like, this is a phenomenal theory btw!

Here is wild theory. There is two maxes for each of endings. In this story we play Max who saved Chloe. The memories was traumatic, so they split, but Max still loves her deep in her heart. The Max what sacrifices Chloe became mad with time. She discovered powers of traversing through two realities earlier. She killed this new girl thinking that Max would remember the loss and cooperate with her to save both the bay and bae, but it is not possible. At the end, to prevent the catastrophe, Max must make unification, so two versions of her become one, as well as the two realities become one, and she can choose either Chloe or new girl (and the Bay ) is alive :D
It would be funny if someone showed Max video evidence of her doing something and she doesn't remember it because it was a Photo Focus.

Interesting well, if it’s a meteor this time, considering the game takes place on the eastern seaboard of the United States that alone for people who are familiar will know that Eastern seaboard is pretty highly defended with ground to air defenses and air to air defenses makes me wonder if they’ll be some intervention from the military and Air Force attempting to destroy the meteor assuming it will be a meteor that hits the university an interesting theory though that it might be a meteor.

max is 100% the murder. there isn t any special character in the trailer other than max. Think about it. If it the murder is a parent or a cop, or another friend that would be to similar to the plotwist that our beloved teacher is actually a psyko, like ok just another human being we didn t expect. Makes sense of why this theory can be true

Well I think cuz the name “double exposure” there could be a double meaning. So its not just a photography reference but talking about exposuring two people instead. Also isn’t it weird she took a photography SHOT then shes dead by being shot? So perhaps the story is about her finding the murderer and thats her so she’s exposing herself meanwhile exposing safi as a bad person as well

I feel like it’s a Jefferson variant. But I’m happy to be proven wrong.
doubt that, what motive would he have? he doesnt know Max has powers in any of the scenarios and since Max is in her late 20s he does not have any reason to even remotely get back at Max for anything. All the Jefferson variants that had Max in the dark room either continued doing what they did in the first game or are in prison. The Maxes that didnt end up there ratted him out anyway without Jefferson knowing who ratted him out in the first place.

She may not actually be in the game. However, depending on whether the player decided to sacrifice Arcadia Bay or Chloe in the first Life Is Strange game, Max will have a photo of her or no photo of her.

I made my theories more grounded and on the logical side of things. Safi received a call and used her full name for identification something police and hospital staff use to identify the victim's closest next of kin, due to the stress of the call she started chain smoking and entered the restricted section of the forest.
She appeared to be fine even when the gunshot was heard, and was in a call. But when Max finds her she is sitting on a bench with her camera and on closer inspection Max realizes she was shot.
My theory is that she was investigating a mystery on her own and the call she received was most likely the police informing her that someone she knows is no more. The reason why Safi's death is an impossible mystery is because there is no evidence or leads to follow. But we know she was shot, meaning someone stole the evidence and made it disappear.
From what we know, the most possible explanation is that Safi's 1st call ended and she started chain-smoking and entered the restricted section. heard the gunshot and called for an ambulance, then Sat down on the bench and used her 1950s camera to zoom in and find out where the shot came from, and was shot back by the culprit, who this time used a silencer and used their influence to make the evidence disappear.
It would be interesting if the murderer was the Max from the other dimension.

Deck Nine’s creating another storm this October (featuring Chloe) where the player has to choose between the UnReal, cringy, Deck9 reboot of Life is Strange, or PriceField. No hate, but you Deck Nine Stans are on your own with this one. This game is as dead to me as Arcadia Bay when I made this choice in the OG. 🤷♀️
