      No cover at all for the spare open busbar. Just live copper left for anyone to touch ! Separate earth just as that above. New tails but tiny length and just taped over blue not real blue ! Bunched up neutrals, baggy sleeving, they don't have any effect on the safety of the electrics which is what really matters. Aesthetics doesn't appear in the regs book. Sure, tidy wiring is nice to see and shows the person doing the work has some pride. And DIY Dave wouldn't need to try and do it himself if getting it done properly wasn't so very very expensive. Why is it expensive? Because there are whole industries and bodies that over regulate everything with belts on braces health and safety on top of belts on braces on top of more belts and braces, who want to cream money of the back of Electricians, like registered persons schemes, building regs body with notifications, cost which we have to pass on and regs that no sooner have they come out, they are amended with a whole new set of expensive books to buy that account for the updates, not to mention update courses & over complicated certificates trying to cover every possible aspect of what you should do at a macro level to the point I'm amazed they dont specify the torque setting to use on the screws that fix the consumer unit to the wall to prevent the paint work from being damaged, thus exposing base metal which may rust over time resulting in the metal wearing away under the screw head and the board becoming slightly loose in 50 years time.

      Agreed, 'baggy sleeving' OMG!! I will admit there are issues with this install; however there is a concerted effort here by those with a vested interest to stop DIY Dave doing a 'like-for-like' replacement in his own home; such as bringing in nonsense changes such as consumer unit from plastic to metal. The 'industry' should be simplfying the install and informing the public more so rely on personal responsibility without ever increasing nannying.

      It wouldn't be so bad if jobs done by electricians were universally perfect and at a level random untrained people could never achieve but... well... the inside of my meter box is a bit of a mess after the guy came to fit my EVSE, and my mate had a solar installation done where *they got live and neutral switched and he got a shock off his shower*.
      If we have to have bits of paper and certificates to prove installations are safe, maybe they should be inspected by someone other than the guy that installed it?
      Feels a bit like a protection racket, rather than regulatory bodies interested in safety. Don't do a home install mate, or the guild of electricians will come round your house and teach you about job security ;-)
      That being said, while I'm just a random home owner, and don't know some of the subtle details, I would have at least got all the wiring tidy and screwed everything down straight, rather than at that wonky angle it was. It's not hard to have a bit of attention to detail.

    one reason to scrimp and save on the CU is maybe, like me, he had a spark come and change out a board in the house, was charged £550+vat plus materials (14 way full RCBO AFD, no surge) well over a grand by the end of it all, and the bloody thing nearly fell off the wall. Didn't crimp/seal up the main fuse or meter tail box. left the cupboard in the kitchen in a right mess with long tails bulging all over the place just taped together didn't connect the main earth ( TT supply). was like that for 3 weeks until I came home from work and checked it out. my kid was 5 at the time and my wife was pregnant. hence the board swop and EICR. wanted to check the place was safe for little fingers to be poking around.
    I fixed it all my self, not a domestic/commercial electrician, but am a marine electrician, could not inform the DNO, but not selling the house and I do have all the equipment, and experience to fully test the system to make sure it is safe. Not all trades are cowboys, but I KNOW I am not.
    If my work is good enough for me to be strangling 3k3v cables around commercial ships. it is good enough to put a few 2.5mm 230V around my living room.

    Alot of mumbo jumbo , hurr durr from a guy with big ego.. What exactly is the problem with this installation other than it being messy , sure some terminated ends of neutral wires are a bit exposed but i dont think anyone would get electrocuted by that in a 100 years. There is no problem with the installation , other than i also dont like how the box is not very well secured , but i can say that its gonna work a 100% if its wired correctly which is hard to mess up in alot of cases. Other than the mentioned i see no problem with this installation...

  • @joaoserra3839
    @joaoserra3839 Год назад +2

    Not sure how it works in Britain but if you're forced to sign off on the whole installation and can get in trouble over this refuse to do anything, that said i doubt that's the case because people change stuff all the time and might break things and then you'd be on the hook for it which is unfair for you guys unless you literally keep records of every socket, light fixture and wire in the installation lol
    In most other countries we don't have such bureaucracy but we're also not on the hook for things the customer does, if it fails then the customer calls you back or gets someone else to fix it, britain is a lot more strict however than anywhere else i've seen i've never even seen boards full of RCBOs in other countries as you guys do it in Britain, usually there's just one RCD and that's it, you're forced to have insurance that covers damages to third parties and that's it, if the customer screws anything up it's his problem
    Wouldn't want to work with gas or like them tbh, the bureaucracy involved is mindboggling and it must be incredibly stressful because they're actually liable to go to jail if they screw up
    People making comparisons with gas however are imo out of order, gas is a totally different thing, every country even those most lax on most regulations are strict on gas because gas faults can easily cause massive explosions that electrical faults can't create they can also intoxicate people without them noticing and kill them, the death rate of faulty gas installations exceeds that of faulty electrics, that's why people care more about gas than electrical literally for every serious accident from electrics there's 2 or more from gas (in countries with strict gas regulation and lax electric regulation mind you) so the rate is actually twice as bad at the least and the gas accidents almost always result in one or more fatalities, the electrical accidents usually just result in injury for the person doing the sloppy work, so if i was a legislator i would not take as it as serious either tbh, you need to only limit people's freedoms when there is an express need to do so, electrics is just not the case
    Note that i'm talking about anything inside their consumer unit, consumers in my country are still not allowed to touch anything outside it and can't request a disconnection of the main fuse without providing a qualified electrician ID
    Though again you should be able to just refuse the job if they do this type of thing behind your back especially and you talking about "signing off on it" makes me think they wanted to sneak this into your "signing off" which is a serious dick move

    That’s not a bad attempt for a DIYER. I think he’s just nit picking as he didn’t get the job of doing it. It’s fire rated and I wouldn’t say the earth/MEC HAS to go into the meter tails hole as long as the live and neutral are together!! Some silicone at the top of the board or closed grommets. But yes I agree it should be left to the electrician to change and sign off I would note the customer carried it out himself to save money. I’ve seen worse boards done by so called skilled electricians that’s when I get irritated!

  • @paulphillips2941
    @paulphillips2941 Год назад +2

    Id be taking pictures of it all and walking straight off the job. A customer that takes on a board change wont think twice about adding sockets in or changing lights etc after youd signed it all off and left. Think theyre saving a few quid by doing it themselves but theyre costing themselves more money when they have to pay you to fix their mistakes aswell as re-do what they already think theyd done in the first place. Fuse boards etc shouldnt be sold to public, should have to show a valid part p card or something to be able to buy one and there should be a register to put the details of customers that mess with their electrics on to flag them up to others in the trade. Can leave reviews for a company, why not one for a customer?
    Always loved it when customers say theyll supply their own sockets etc to save money aswell but they dont realise you could get it all cheaper from the wholesalers than they could from screwfix 😂

    Fair comments but the reason he has done it himself probably because of the cost involved. I've just had a consumer unit upgrade 3 years ago and been told that the unit needs upgraded at a cost of over £700 on top of £1600 for a new ring main and separate 6mm feed for a new stove. All in all over £20k just to replace a kitchen.
    Labour rates are going through the roof and even the boiler change is coming in at £3500.
    £1500 for a new boiler and the £2000 is for labour moving it 3 feet.

    There are 2 things to remember when looking at work like this, BS7671 requires a competent person to carry out this type of work, if they're not deemed competent they are subject to enforcement under EAWR and building regulations. Depending how badly the customer may have done with circuit protection etc while other people are using the electricity to finish works it could even be RIDDOR'd. I honestly don't understand how people can be so daft, they learnt with Gas don't touch but Electrics they're still learning.

    • @welshwoodco

      A DIYer can’t ‘notify’ building control, they have to inform and apply for a certificate, at a cost. I’m not sure that cost includes any testing, you have to prove to BC the install meets regs so it’s unlikely to be financially worthwhile unless you can actually do all your testing and BC will take the results

    God it looks rough, why does the customer think that replacing the consumer unit themselves will save them money, it’s not compliant to BS:7671, they won’t get a cert for it either making it legal, if you can’t afford it then cut back on the expensive accessories, the consumer unit is the most important accessory on your electrical system, it’s literally your electrical seatbelt yet time and time again you see landlords scrimp and save on the CU buying the cheapest rubbish they can find and have a split load as it’s cheaper, you wouldn’t ask for a piece of string in your car for a seatbelt so why scrimp in your safety equipment in your house 🤯🤯
