In college I had a housemate from Taiwan who often pointed out that 'all of you white people looked the same to me' and my ex, from Mexico, also used to say 'all of you white people look the same to me.'
Years ago, I worked with a guy who would just stare at me for long periods of time and one day I broke down and asked him what his issue was.
He said he was visually impaired and my face was just a large white blob to him at a distance, so it took him a while to realize who I was unless I was standing close to him or I was talking and he could hear my voice.
As a well-traveled adult, I now realize that people who don't grow up in a crowded metropolis and aren't exposed to different cultures of people might not have seen enough people to know the difference between a Nigerian and a Dominican, or a Japanese and a Vietnamese, or an Egyptian and a Turk, or a Russian and a Californian.

I painted my face black for Halloween one year. I was flavor flave. Clock and horns. Gold teeth. I was at a party full of black freinds. Nobody said anything. Went to the store before the party and some black girls took pictures with me. I grew up in mostly black neighborhoods. I never knew that was offensive. Evidently neither did none of the people I was with that night. We had fun.

When I was 8 in the 90s I dressed as Steve Urkel for Halloween one year. Painted my face and arms black. I won first place in my boy scouts Halloween costume contest. I went to school like that too. People didn't get offended at all. Simpler times back then. Black men could wear white face and people like Adam Corolla was doing The Man Show dress as Shaq. Everything was better back then. Then some white people got together and said black face is offended black people. Because you know whites know how blacks feel better than black do. Lol
