      If the final season hadn’t made a mockery of all this, I agree. I think the explanation would be that he was originally imprisoned as Jaqen, wore the face of Syrio Forel, and then returned to his place as a prisoner as Jaqen again. Ned would have hired him as Syrio, and in that role he became invested in Arya’s well being.

    I think the "assassin's guild" or "faceless men" had their eyes on destabilizing kings landing for a long time and when Ned Stark was chosen as hand of the king they sent Jaqen there to oversee and infiltrate the region/town. Jaqen used Syrio as a cover to maintain his surveilance over the situation and gather intel. Once the coupe occurred upon Roberts death Jaqen had to act fast and probably had grown fond of Arya so he decided to save her from being murdered. Jaqen tracked Arya down and followed her knowing that she could have the potential to become a faceless assassin and finally finish the assassin's guilds goal of destabilizing King's Landing by obtaining retribution for Ned's execution.

    In one of the previous scenes of Aryia and Syrio training, Ned Stark is there observing them. Every time one of the wood training swords they are using makes contact it makes a distinctive sound. Ned, while listening to this, starts to reflect on one of his previous battles from his past and you can start to here the sound of metal on metal from the real swords in his day dream. The reason I bring this up is because I believe the show runners are trying to use these sounds as foreshadowing for a future event. The one where Syrio is protecting Aryia from the Lannister soldiers and Ser Meryn Trant. The beginning of the scene you can here the sound of Syrio's wood sword everytime he strikes a sword or one of the Lannister soldiers bodies and we also here the sound of the soldiers swords as they hit Syrio's wooden sword. After he incapacitates the Lannister Soldiers he squares off with Ser Maryn. In this scene we see Ser Meryn cut Syrios wooden practice sword in half. Syrio then tells Aryia what do we say to the god of death? She replies not today and Syrio instructs her to go. Aryia flees to an adjacent hallway where she can here soldiers fighting in a different area but we also here the distinctive sound of a wooden sword making contact with a body and the sound of a metal sword hitting the ground. I believe Syrio was able to incapacitate Ser Meryn with half a sword and it was Ser Meryn's sword we here dropping. This is why the show runners have Aryia stuff a rag in Ser Meryns mouth when she tells him why he was the first on her list. So he cant answer and give away that Syrio didn't die. I absolutely whole heartedly know that Syrio did not die in that scene. The only thing I wonder now is who hired the Faceless men to protect Aryia and Quite possibly Ned Stark may still be alive. I have a couple of theories on this. Did Bran Stark figure out that the ink really isn't dry or is Varys behind it.

      "The only thing I wonder now is who hired the Faceless men to protect Aryia ..." (sic). That is the question that needs to be asked. Ned hired Syrio to train Arya. He probably had other business in King's Landing and being a trainer provided a good cover along with access to the Red Keep. I doubt Ned realized Syrio might be a Faceless Man, especially if the Faceless Man was using Syrio's identity and reputation as a cover. I think Syrio/Jaqen identified Arya as a potential assassin and was trying to recruit her after her previous life had been destroyed. Why else give the coin but to attempt get her to voluntarily go to the House of Black and White? We _still_ don't know what Jaqen's/Syrio's mission was in King's Landing. Recruiting Arya was just a bonus.

      I think Nedd made a deal with the faceless men to train and watch over Arya. There always has to be a Stark in Winterfell. Maybe Nedd figured she was the only 'real' Stark. He knew that Jon was a Targaryen and Jon's at the wall. Bran is a Stark but can't fight. Sansa is contemplating happy good time with Joffrey. That guy that jumps off the boat is not a Stark. And Robb is still alive but likely to seek life in the great unknown. That leaves her.

    Of course Syrio and Jaqen are the same person. Arya's path has been chosen for her by some force that began interfering in her life from the first moment that she met her dancing master. Syrio put Arya on the path to becoming a Faceless man, and Arya said that the death{?} of Syrio caused her to create her list of people to kill. Syrio taught her to fight, and his fake death made her want to be a killer. Jaqen showed her a way to become an ultimate killer, and because of his input she ended up in Bravos.
    Jaqen turned up on the caravan to the Wall because he WANTED to connect with Arya there. There is NO way that Jaqen could have been captured and kept in that wagon unless he wanted to be there. By demonstrating the abilities of the Faceless Men to Arya, he motivated her to travel to Bravos to be trained as one. After she killed the Waif, Jaqen LET her leave when he could have easily killed her, BUT HE DIDNT.
    Arya has some BIG purpose in the story, and I don't think that she will survive the finale. She will make perhaps the most important kill of the final battle, perhaps even Cersei herself, or the Night King. I think The Hound will end up putting her out of her misery {as she was not able to do for him} after she completes her secretly ordained mission. She is too much the killing machine to ever go back to a normal life, and her eventual interaction with the Hound may well be his redemption for his past crimes.

    Excellent theory and well put together. I've thought this for a while too because you never really see what happens to Syrio. Now I need to go back a few seasons and watch all episodes with the House In Black And White and see if Syrio's face is up on any of the walls...

    If Syrio isn’t Jaquen then how did Jaquen end up in the black cells? It doesn’t seem likely that he would be imprisoned unless he wanted to be.

    • @AbelMcTalisker
      @AbelMcTalisker Год назад

      A good way to get out of Kings Landing undetected. Prisons are for keeping people from escaping so nobody is going to be looking for somebody sneaking in as a fake prisoner particularly one who can change faces. It is possible that Syrio and Jaquen are the same faceless and equally likely that the Jaquen Arya later meets in Braavos is a different faceless or possibly several.

    Listening to the audio from Syrio's fight I do notice that it's steal hitting the ground and not wood. His death was to insignificant for the statue of his character and H'ghar's training for Arya seemed to be leading her back to Winterfell and not to serve like that girl in the Halls of Black and White. My question did Ned plan this, he knew she would be in danger after what happened with her and Jeoffrey.

  • @thecockerel86

    I used to think that Jaqen H'gar started recruiting Arya because he noticed that she had no trouble assuming other identities on their way out of King's Landing, but that seemed too simple and convenient as an explanation. GRRM tends to set his plots very early so they can marinate as the story moves along. Think of Littlefinger's grand scheme to bring chaos to the realm, or the Boltons sending Reek to Winterfell early on in the first book AGOT, or even the Ghost of High Heart. So, in the same vein, it is extremely likely that he would have set an important plotline like Arya's journey to the House of Black and White deliberately early with Syrio Forel, and not with chance meeting on the escape from the capital. In becoming Arya's dancing master, the faceless man got the first hand opportunity to assess his recruit and begin to shape her mentally for the future. It is very likely that Syrio Forel and Jaqen H'gar are the same person.

    Of course this is true. Immediately after 1 Bravosi mentor exits Arya's life, another takes his place 5 minutes later.
    As for the whole 1st Sword of Bravos thing.... that could have been a lie.
    I see some discount the theory because they think this is a fact, but Faceless Men are all liars.
    Maybe Syrio WAS a 1st Sword of Bravos....
    a long time ago, before he died, and before he gave his face to the Many Faced God!
    The 1st Sword of Barvos never runs. Unless of course he is really a Faceless Man in disguise and he is not supposed to kill Trant or any the of the guards because it is not their time to die. Especially Trant, he still had a part to play.
    It doesn't matter if they show this to be true or not, it will be left open as a possibility.

    A quick thought, maybe Forel left Trant alive because he knew Arya would have to kill him later on as part of her list, thus furthering her development as "noone" under the faceless god.

    I guess this;
    Ned hired/made a deal with a faceless man to protect arya, the faceless man disguise himself as syrio and trains arya. When Trall and his men his men attack them, he says " what do we pray to the god of death - not today" which is actually a hint to arya that he is not going to die there. After arya runs away , he picks up a sword from a downed soldier (if he can disarm them with a wooden sword, he can do it also) and disarms Trall (after arya runs away, we hear a sword falling down, which is clearly a metal sword from sound, so there is a possibility that he disarmed Trall) he then escapes to find arya, which he fails since she escaped through the secret passage. He then changes face and witnesses Ned being executed. To complete his deal/word with Ned, he tries to find arya, finding that she is sent to the wall disguised as a boy. He then allows himself to be caught and eventually send to the wall (if it isn't , how a master assassin like h'gar will end up in prison without intention) , he then tries to befriend arya (if he wanted to escape there were other ways) and knowing that she can survive , gives her the coin and etc. And he let's her go finally might be because thinking that he completed his word with Ned. (And I believe that he tried to kill her only to test her and to make her more careful)
    Or consider this ;
    Jaquen h'ghar was guided by 3 eyed raven like benjin stark in order to protect and prepare arya knowing that she is important in the final war (and everything same as above, like he disguises as syrio and on)

      It's hard to imagine that Ned has contacts with the faceless men. But on the other hand he does know that Arya isn't a little princes like Sansa, and apparently the faceless men don't get paid in money. Maybe he made a deal so Jaqen would protect Arya and in return would be allowed to recruit her - it would be a hard decision for Ned, but he knows that it would fit her nature better, and he's damn good at keeping secrets when it comes to protect the people he loves.

    The only real difference between Syrio and Jaqen is their faces… a distinction that Jaqen proves meaningless before he leaves Arya.
    By saving Arya, Syrio denied the red god her death, just like the way Arya saves Jaqen and the other two, which Jaqen explains must be given back to the red god, but Jaqen is a faceless man… he is no one and therefore he has no life. The third life was to pay the red god for the life Syrio/Jaqen stole when they saved Arya in the first place.
