    Thanks AvE.....
    Yes, I know this video is almost a year old. I've watched AvE's work for years. Somehow, I missed this one. I don't know how old he is, but it doesn't matter.
    This video is superb in that is an example of how you can solve a "problem" with a little thought. We are never at the the end of the road guys. I'm an old guy of 70+ years. I spent my entire career in heavy manufacturing industry. I was a maintenance tech. Back when I was just starting, if something broke, we never had the luxury of ordering a new part and then waiting for it to be delivered. We had to 'think"about how we could repair or make a new part. This video is an example of thinking outside the box. I would recommend this channel to any young guy or gal who is just starting out in the business of industrial equipment maintenance. This video is why I always wanted to work with seasoned older guys. They were a blast and always taught me something valuable.

    I’m an electrician just recently started using this method it’s great, before for j boxes a little trick I would use- say I needed a 1 inch hole in a 1900 box, I’ll put a 3/4 connector in the hole and then place the wholesaw over it and bam but this works great for everything like holes in the floor etc. 👍

    Brilliant, been elecrician 30 years, hacked a lot but never thought of that. Thanks for sharing.
    There's another trick I don't know if you're aware of: When you chase through two sides of drywall, you can never quite seem to get two holes aligned with an extension bit (the shank is smaller than the hole)
    Just snip some teeth in the end of a short EMT conduit (nominal size of hole saw)
    Slide other end into the hole saw.
    Run a self tap lath screw into side of pipe through the cleanout slot in hole saw (to retain conduit)
    Boom! You got yourself a pass-through hole saw (of any depth)

    This was perfect timing! My "new" house has an ornate door we didn't want to part with but the knob was finicky in that it didn't work and prevented a swift exit in case of fire. I had planned on building some complicated platform for my drill press, or some form of template for my router. Instead, a quick trip to the big box store and I had what I need. 2 minutes later my hole was large and perfectly smooth. Thanks again!

    As an electrician this trick works, i have used it. however if you are not careful it will move the whole to close to the back edge and not allow you to get a locknut or bushing on. I use a piece of wood on the inside of the box for a pilot, so the back of the pipe entrance is not jammed up against the back of the box or cabinet. Just a tip.

      I've done the scrap piece of wood also and a couple of small vice grips to hold it in place.
      Works slick.
      Yes , you are right about the hole location problem.
      I did that only once.
      After that I'd check the new needed hole location with the larger conduit fitting locknut just to be sure there was room left for it to be tightened up later and then put the hole where it needs to be for that purpose.

      If it's a nylon gland, you can use your conduit cutters to circumcise your lock nut, it gives you a bit of room towards the back, it'll help keep it's self in place.

    Great idea AvE! I have used wooden dowels as a guide. And I have used one turned around to reverse drill out a bath tap. No space, and the tap could not be un-screwed. Another useful trick when you have a ring nut that you cannot get a spanner at is put a socket on it. And then push the bar through the hole into the socket. No ring nut has ever been able to resist this method. Kind regards and greetings from Africa.

    Another trick I use with hole saws is to take the 1/4 inch bit out of the arbor and replace it with a 1/4 inch piece of solid roundstock. This will keep the bit from chewing up the pilot hole and walking around on you. It just requires drilling a pilot hole separate from the hole saw. Makes for a much cleaner end product.

      I think this is the right way! That nice 1/4" rod is more stiff and a better bearing than an expensive special drill bit, anyway! I've managed to push a hole saw through several INCHES of aluminum plate this way, a long tedious process I'm sure you can imagine! But at least you have a chance! Hey, life is cheap in America.

    • @JELWwL6unE8V7iGB3
      @JELWwL6unE8V7iGB3 5 лет назад

      I've cut the head and threads off of a long 1/4" grade 8 bolt for that before. I usually drill the pilot hole with the hole saw off the arbor even if I don't have a smooth guide. Too many times as the pilot comes through, it wants to suck the drill forward, firmly engage whichever hole saw teeth are closest and snap itself.

    Should you find yourself with only the bigger holesaw size available and the pilot drillbit, as well as access to both sides of the plate, you can add a piece of wood,plastic,whatever is handy, and keep it on the underside while drilling. this tip works well for thin sheets like here, not so much in thick wood.

      Or if only access to one side, blow a hole through a 2x board, clamp or screw the board to the object, and set the holesaw inside the hole in the board to hold the saw in place. Also, always run it in reverse at the start, to break the the surface on laminated metals and woods as to leave a clean hole(for desks, furniture, and counter-tops).

    You're doing it the hard way with the big to small hole saw arbors. Get a 1/4' bolt about 3 or 4" long, cut the head off. Take the pilot drill out of both arbors. Insert and tighten the headless 1/4" bolt in the small arbor where the drill bit was. Turn the small hole saw upside down and insert the bolt/arbor assembly in the large arbor and tighten the large arbor screw. This also works when your hole saws are different brands with different threads. I'm an old electrician with no eyebrows, last time they were burned off they didn't grow back. :)

    That's pretty darn clever. I usually just use a large unibit, but that's not always the best solution.
    I've worked in the electrical trade for 10 years and have never seen this trick. I'll have to show my co-workers.
    Also, a Milwaukee hole saw kit I bought recently came with a 1/2 thread to 3/4 thread adapter to put a large hole saw on a small arbor. Comes in darn handy.

      I first encountered this setup when I had to mount a flush decorative surface box in a hardwood floor. The box itself was 3-3/4 diameter and the (recessed) trim ring hole needed to be 4 inch diameter. Using the double hole saw made the stepped hole like a charm.

    Hi, please apologize me, but I could not find any other way to contact you about the following. Do you remember the video you made a couple of days after the crash of the Morandi bridge in Genova on August the 14? Your hypothesis was that the bridge has been collapsed because one of the stays was corroded. Well, listening to the news, yestersday they found, under the ruins, part of the stay and it was seriously corroded and they had sent it to Switzerland to be analyzed by a lab specialized in the analysis of metals to have the exact evidence. Have a nice day and congrats for the interesting videos.

    • @rfcarlson1
      @rfcarlson1 6 лет назад +1

      I don't think doubling up on rubbers is that well thought out and probably has resulted in the over population of liberals in Canada. If the probably of a rubber failing is p, the the event space of doubled rubbers failing is [p(1-p) + (1-p)p + p*p] or p**2 + 2p(1-p). Assuming these are reliable rubbers with a low failure rate p is small and this results in doubling up rubbers doubling the failure rate to approximately 2p. And you lose that loveing feeling too!

I needed to enbiggen a hole in sheet metal and eventually after some moonshine and staring into my tool box for a while, i decided to wrap the pilot drill in elechickens tape and ram a socket down in there as my guide. Worked fine but the hole saw and socket combo stayed jammed together on the bench for a few years.

Which is just fine because a ) he fixes most everything around here and the more his sponge brain takes in, the more he fixes and b ) you're growing on me. HOWEVER, there are mentions of the wife's sewing room and I have a really nice sewing machine that is broken and the sewing shop says it can't be fixed because "the part is discontinued" (and yes, I've tried to find an old machine to part out). Surely you've fixed a supposedly unfixable sewing machine?! I know he can do it! Your inspiration would definitely help.
