Brilliant storyline and a terrible verdict. They were both narcissistic bullies- they felt entitled to bully vulnerable people without any feeling of empathy. They basicly admitted breaking into Roach's house, and Leavis' cross examination proved they were also guilty of breaking into that old ladys house.
They also ran from the police and were caught with evidence linking their movements to the places where the robbers had struck. It seems the jury couldn't see what was apparent to even 'Blind Freddy.'
Some Crown Court cases draw you totally in, by the time of the verdict you're not watching actors anymore, you genuinely want the accused either released or banged up in Parkhurst.
This is British television at it's all time best, ITV can destroy all of their original studios but the programmes made in them will live on, just like Granada Manchester where this programme was produced.
To quote a great comedian “You seem like a nice boy” Jez T. Thank you so much for uploading your collection of Crown Court episodes. Wonderful to get to see such compelling and well written shows after so many years.
I noticed the foreman, he's even in the credits, Neil Dickson, for a short time he became somewhat famous, 80's-ish, a big film at the time was 'Biggles'. I think he was even up for James Bond, although I could be wrong.
He may well have done, but if so they clearly didn't listen. In fact their goal seems to have been to use 'humour' to get the jury on their side, and it worked.
One of the quirky episodes with rather black humour (Percy in the fridge). Not an episode for everyone but I do enjoy this one. The occasional oddball episodes are an interesting way to mix it up a bit. When played as straight court room drama CC was excellent TV that still hold up well decades later.
I would convict them just for beings pains in the neck. Watching the accused men's' mannerisms, I am sure the actors from League of Gentlemen must have seen this episode and drawn from it for a lot of their characterisations.
Glad some things have changed for the better. Nothing about these two were ,remotely, funny. I would bet a jury these days wouldn't find anything about them vaguely amusing. Despite getting off on technicalities, the judge should've slapped a 'contempt' order on them. Didn't 'buy' this story. They were as guilty as sin !!! Surely, entering someone's house, under false pretences and tying them up, however loosely ,is a crime in itself???
muskndusk I should have written - the first two witnesses to be cross examined, not the accused. I agree Lovelace and Leavis are a bit annoying and not funny.
Horridly insensitive treatment of a distressed old lady by a bombastic, aggressive defence. And as for the ‘elaborate practical joke’ the criminals played on the poor canary, you have to be crooked yourself to call it that. Some of these lawyers have hearts of stone and a big ego.

Shame on me but I did laugh when the rogues threatened to put the pensioner in the fridge with Percy. Being a British jury they will be more outraged at the treatment of little Percy than the old lady.
Sadly...that kind of 'humour' was prominent including on prime time tv at the time. You could see the jury chuckling along at quite offensive lines. They seemed to have been taken in by the act and missed the evidence....wrong verdict in my view.

I think a key reason why Crown Court was such a fine show was it being made by Granada - in that era a hallmark of television quality.
The policeman was played by Bernard Hill, who later played Yosser Hughes (Boys from the Black Stuff) and the Captain of the Titanic.
