I painted on unprocessed honeycomb with the honey mixed in that I first torched to a boil with propane and the bees don't seem to like it. I thought they wouldn't mind or could eat the sucrose mixed in, but they don't build comb that spreads across the foundation instead they build perpendicular comb that sticks out from the frames.
Also i'm going to try rearing Queens next year with acorn shells, sewing thimbles, and rubber fingertip protectors.
Thank you so much for the vid, next time I will try purewax instead for painting frames. This year has kind of been wasted because the deep box never really got going because I have to keep scraping the wonky comb off of frames 1,2,9 and 10.

I have a video idea for you, something I’d like to see myself. I wonder if painting on the wax is preferred by the bees over “coloring/rubbing” extra wax on with a wax block. I’ve tried both methods and the wax block is definitely less messy, but haven’t experimented to see which is better. I’d be curious to see the outcome.

No. Most beekeepers are concerned about Neonicotinoids that farmers use as in insecticide. They are a new class of insecticides chemically related to nicotine in tobacco, so no I would not recommend that.

Naive and maybe silly question. Has anyone thought about making a negative 3d printer mould where you can just pour the wax over. I would assume it would be the exact dimensions of the starter. That way the bees won’t need to do much work, hence faster honey production.

    • @beek

Only the queen is the original "old", mated queen. Studies of swarm age bees are very young bees, ready to make wax. Also, bees can always reactivate glands, but just not as good.

    Tip :
I would be careful Heating Wax direct over an Element (even in a Heated Electric Pan) as Wax can catch Fire easily.🔥
I would suggest a Bain Marie System :where Water between the Heat Source & that of the Melting Wax, makes Wax Melting much safer ! 🙄 Thrift Store Crockpots, with another Deep Container (eg Recycle a Coffee Can) means you can melt your Cappings easily and safely.
Add Water to that Crockpot, get Hot, add the Second inner Container with Dry Wax only, and watch that second Pot melt. It also means you can lift and pour the Melted Wax easily. To add back to the heat bath, to re-warm cooling Wax. Simples ! 👍
David, have you tried making your own Foundation Strips of Wax ? I got a Wax Comb Press Set (Sheets x2 Silicon, a Top Sheet you lower onto the lower Base Sheet.)
Each sheet gives the DIY made Foundation Worker Cells on both sides ! (And, or you can Roll these Warm Wax Sheets, to make 'Au Natural' Comb Candles. Do remember to add a long Wick, at the inner End of that Wax, before you roll up that Sheet ! Bees Wax smells amazing... 🥰
By creating your own Foundation also means, it makes Chemical and Virus Free Wax Comb.... from your own collected Wax Cappings ! 🤗

Enjoy your Bees Wax, for maybe making Homemade Christmas Candles 🕯🎄 🕯

    • @beek

Because, I show how you can add wax to comb and they draw out the comb faster and the faster the honey super comb is drawn out the faster they can fill them up with more honey.
