This is really cool. I'm thinking about starting out too possibly, and have considered just buying a remote and using it with a sim until I feel good enough to practice with a real drone. This kind of thing really inspires me though

Thats awesome! I started with the sim then jumped to a 5-inch. Its going to save you a lot of money lol!
