I wouldn't write off getting a Yellow Submarine Deluxe Box Set just yet. The album could be packaged with a Blu-ray of the movie, as well as the Songtrack from 1999. With all new surround sound mixes to boot.
These are unique and it would fill in a hole in the discography. The Yellow Submarine and Long Tall Sally would be a treat. Great video Andrew.
Thanks!
I would love to see an update of the 1992 CD box set to match the 2009 Mono CD box set.
It would be awesome if they not only re-released it, but included the two EPs that were cancelled, as Andrew had mentioned.
How about Leave My Kitten Alone ☺️...I remember getting that special release back in the 1970s...we were in shock to hear this....we were shortchanged in the USA ....some Beatles songs were not available in our Country.... thanks to Capital....like Sour Milk Sea and what's the new Mary Jane etc...I had A Dolls House on Import from Germany in the 1970s....it was great to hear The Beatles making Music like that....
I like the idea of including the scrapped Yellow Submarine EP. And I too like that cover that you showed. However, I don't think the box set should be limited to the UK EP's. There are many great EP's from around the world that should be included. Either for their song selections or their covers. Much like they did for the recent vinyl singles box set.
Absolutely Right. I second this motion
more than anything i’d like box sets of all the bizarre and forgotten international-only releases…one each for albums, for EPs, and for singles. singles might be the most fun - something that includes stuff like the costa rican “words of love” 7-inch or the eccentric ‘67 release of “this boy” b/w “she’s leaving home” from the philippines
I've never heard the sound quality of the original EP's since we didn't have them in the U.S. I own a copy of the Record Store Day 'Long Tall Sally'; not sure if its sound measures up to the original. I would definitely pay extra for an EP box that was a 100% faithful reproduction of the original. We can only hope that happens. The sound quality of the Singles Box is superb indeed. Thanks for putting the word out there about another much-needed Beatles release (or should I say re-release)! Take care.
Yes please get it done,can’t wait.vinyl brian❤
Absolutely! I got the blue box album and singles box sets in the '80's but missed the EPs box set. I'd love to get a new EP box set.
I think that is a great idea. If the Yellow Submarine EP and the original Golden Discs EP were included I would definitely add it to my collection. Robert In Coventry.
Might jack up the price but I'd love it if they added the Veejay and Capitol EPs. Plus the maxi singles from the 90s for live @ bbc and Anthology!
Those EPs were great and despite being mostly previously released tracks, the covers were really good. I'm waiting for a full scale reissue campaign for that other band behind you. Yes, The Rutles - the pre-fab four that made the sixties what they are today!
I actually have The Rutles LP. I got it when I had the Music Director order it for me from the record company rep when I was working in Radio. When it arrived, the Program Director handed me a new, sealed copy of The Rutles, and remembering that I had ordered a few other oddities in the past, said to me, “Don’t you own any NORMAL records?”
Great video, as usual. I agree with you. They should also add the very few VeeJay and Capitol EP releases as well in the set. I got my original 1981 EPs boxed set for my birthday back in 1982. One of the best gifts ever! Played it once then bagged it up where it remains today, in beautiful NM condition (I have changed the bag a few times over the years).
I really want a US 45's re-issue box. Some of those original pictures sleeves are hard to find and most in poor condition. Make them color vinyl too!
Thanks for the video Andrew! I owned the 1981 box years ago and I foolishly sold in the 1990s. I probably would purchase a new reissue. I do hope Apple decides to a Yellow Submarine box along with Magical Mystery Tour as well. Take care!
I hope so too, Bill.
7” EPS made their comeback in the punk rock era (thanks mainly to American labels like Dischord, SST, and Touch & Go)… and haven’t really gone away since. Epic/CBS even started doing 10” EPS in 1980.
A new EP boxset aiming to be as faithful as possible would be great. I agree that it would be a welcome bonus and good marketing to have the cancelled EP's too.
On a further note, I really enjoy the CD EP boxset. Some of my favourite digital versions in that set.
If they really wanted to, they could add the full, 12" singles of Baby It's You, Free as a Bird and Real Love. Baby It's you especially has been mistaken for an EP. It's also give the chance to reissue the anthology edits, which have been out of print since the anthology happened almost 25 years ago. The Yellow Submarine from the Real Love single was reissued for the Revolver boxset, but everything else (besides the a-side itself) has been forgotten about and never released on an LP nor on digital/streaming services. There's the edits/remixes of This Boy and Here, There and Everywhere that almost made it onto Anthology 1 and Anthology 2 respectively. There's the live version of Baby's In Black that which has almost been fully released; the song itself was a bonus track on the recent Live at the Hollywood Bowl remix from Giles, but the intro on the Real Love single is absent on the version on the album. Take 9 of I Saw Her Standing There bizarrely never appeared on the Bootlegs 1963 album from 2013 despite other takes from the session being used on the album. Most importantly, though, is Christmas Time (Is Here Again), which is the only officially released Beatles song without any version appearing on an official album. Also, the BBC performance of Devil in Her Heart on the Baby It's You single has never been released on an album, despite the title track appearing on the first Live at the BBC album and the other two songs appearing the the second one. 12" singles are effectively glorified EPs anyway, and I don't think anyone would be complaining about their appearances. If the songs aren't gonna be released on an official album, the least that can be done is reissuing the singles on which they appear. Thank you for coming to my TEDtalk.
12"? These were 7" EP's.
@@peterx1957 12" EPs were a thing, albeit way less common. 12" EPs would run at 45 RPM, which is why I find it weird that 12", 45RPM records in the 80s were known as 12" singles. They were eventually replaced by 10" EPs, which continued to be used alongside the 7" versions throughout most of the EPs life. 12" EPs would appear every now and again, but were too costly for a record label to justify, so the 10" was used as a compromise.
@@michaelcrawley7597 In what way would it be impractical? These aren't entire albums nor or they available in other forms. Comparing them to the US albums proposal you saw is misguided and fallacious. These are recordings unavailable on other albums nor streaming - the only way to access them is via the original CDs. There should be more accessibility to these songs, especially Christmas Time (Is Here Again) as very few people get to here it in its highest quality.
Also, I think the whole Capitol Albums thing you saw was a joke. Making fun of how short the albums are compared to their UK counterparts.
@@michaelcrawley7597 nobody said all of them would have to be 12".
@@michaelcrawley7597 fair enough. people will still pay for it, and they don't have to be 12", it's just that their original format at the time would imply that size. the main thing the would be affected is the fidelity.
Easter Suprise!.I still have " Yesterday," on '45,former Yugoslavia pressing on black " Parlophone." Never had an EP,until you showed i never knew those exist. In former Yugoslavia those were not pressed and issued, just '45's. Nice one Andrew.😎
The EP is such a good format, sort of like Goldilocks finding the middle ground which was "just right". Sad that its day passed. I guess the industry preferred to focus on albums because they were more probably more profitable. But now that most people no longer care about or buy albums (unless they were released decades ago), at least parts of the industry have sort of returned to the mid-length format. In K-pop, for example, even major groups like Blackpink rarely release a full album, but they do put out "mini-album" CDs, generally with 3-6 songs on them, and packaged with photos and stickers and such. Anyway, I would definitely pick up a new Beatles EP box if they put one out.
The EP has made a comeback on streaming. Most smaller bands I know put out EPs, especially early on, when releasing because albums are too much cost with little reward. The streaming algorithms reward frequent releases so it’s all gone back to singles and EPs for the most part.
Ringo Starr only releases EPs nowadays.
I think The Beatles' Golden Discs and the unreleased 5-track Yellow Submarine EP would be great additions to a new EP box set. Another great video Andrew.
Actually, in Mono Masters there are the 5 mono mixes from the scrapped YS EP, since Across the Universe is also included.
ABSOLUTELY. It's the one thing I'd go out and buy instantly. I grew up listening to those EPs and I'd love to get them again but I've never been able to easily track down decent copies of all the originals.
And yes, I'd go for the flipbacks any day of the week.
Agreed! The EP box truly deserves a reissue, specially including the canceled titles.
Properly produced it would be a welcome addition to the canon. I would also like to see a triple CD set containing the original mono masters, the cancelled EP's and the final three maxi singles with a completed version of Now And Then and a booklet containing the front and back covers of the EP's
Another splendid post. I never tire of watching these fantastic videos. Well done, Andrew.
Many thanks, John!
A great idea! Thank you, Andrew! The mono and the stereo versions included in the same boxset !! plus the few newer eps they produced during the anthology production.
I’m all for it! I’d love to see the cancelled EPs in there too, especially Yellow Submarine!!! Once again, great video Andrew! 🎉
Something I think needs to be considered in light of new technological advances (many of which were pioneered for the Get Back project) would be a live box set. Even using free online AI demixing technology, it is possible to separate all the different sounds. I tried it with a Star Club recording and it was able to give me vocals, drums and guitars as separate tracks. The sound quality was still not great but if Peter Jackson were to have his team work on it, it could make a huge difference. This would also work with Beatlemania era live recordings as they'd finally be able to separate "the boys" from "the noise". They could have the audience on a separate track, lower it in the mix and make the music the focal point.
As for an EPs set, I think it'd be cool. The biggest draw card for me would be if they were able to find some things that either have never been released or have been long out of print and unavailable elsewhere. One thing the 1981 set wouldn't have had would be the Live At The BBC promotional EP, so that's something else they could include. Maybe there could be a new EP featuring Free As A Bird and Real Love along with John's original demos or possibly alternate mixes.
I'd definitely be in favor of an EP box set, as long as they take the time to make them sound as good as possible. I'm also with you, Andrew, when you say that you'd pay a bit more for faithfully rendered flip-back covers. Thanks for making the video, very entertaining and it certainly has my hoping and wishing that "someone" was indeed listening :)
Fingers crossed, Errol!
I really dig how you snuck in The Rutles' soundtrack album into the background. Pretty darn cool!
I have an early-80's copy of the Long Tall Sally EP, and its sound has impressed me with every vinyl-playing sound system variation I have had.
Totally agree! There should be a new Boxset, just uk only though.I have the 2014 ‘long tall Sally’ re issue and it looks and sounds great.
I’ve always thought the ‘yellow submarine’ ep would be an excellent Record Store Day issue.
I heartily agree! I’d love to see an EP box set with the same outstanding quality as the mono box.
Another prize video Andrew. A vinyl EP Box Set would be brilliant. I'd suggest the same EPs that are in the CD Box Set with the stero and mono M.M.T., the true stereo of This Boy, and Oh! Yes, the 5 Yellow Submarine tracks in both mono and stereo. I suggest the stereo versions that are on the Yellow Submarine Songtrack album. The lads, the spouses and the Record company are rich enough by now so it would be a nice gesture for us loyal fans if they kept the price as low as possible.
Thanks Robert!
Nice idea Andrew, I would definitely like to see that! It would be nice to see it housed in a companion box to the singles also, a modern take on the old blue box sets.
What I would REALLY love to see, is a mixed box set of E.P.'s from around the world. As you know, there were many other versions unique to other countries too, including here in Australia. I'd love to see you do a video on world EP's.
Finally, I have an amazing box set from Mexico from 1981, 'Volume 1'. There are also volumes 2 & 3, which I don't have YET. You have probably seen a lot of these individually over the years, supposedly John Lennon actually selected the tracks for a lot of these, particularly the amazing ones featuring tracks by each Beatle filling the whole EP. eg. 4 Ringo tracks on 1 ep, 4 by George etc. I love these Mexican EP's.
Cheers,
Jase
Great idea, Jase! There were so many EP variations around the world.
I have all three volumes of the Mexican EP collection, a nice rarity if you can find them. I found mine at my local record shop in the early 1980s.
Another top shelf video. I have the ep collection and am very happy with it
Gotta love the Rutles in the background.
I completely agree with everything you have stated here. Thanks for everything you do.
Another great presentation, Andrew!!!
Thanks again, Roger!
Great video, I have the cd ep box set & haven’t played them for a long while, will now dig it out tomorrow for a spin 🎶
Another informative video thanks handsome!
short and sweet, and - of course - perfect, as usual!
Thank you!
Great video! I'd love to have a new excellent sounding Beatles EP Box Set for Xmas 2023!
I for one think this is a great idea. Exactly like you presented it too. Flip backs and all. Plus all those bonus disc. I too have thought they’re missing this set from the recent reissues, and would love to add it to my collection!
I'd love a new colored EP vinyl boxset, great video as always!
Thanks, I listened to the Twist and Shout EP . The entire EP sounded great. I had never been played. My box set is like brand new.
Very good, Andrew! Vinyl issues are really piece of art.
What a great video, Andrew! But the photo on The Beatles' Million Sellers EP cover was taken in Farringdon Studios, London on October 7th, 1964. The photo was shot by Robert Whitaker (not Robert Freeman). It was his first assignment with the band.
Noted!
VERY GOOD, I LOVED IT!!!
Superb Andrew almost like a plee to apple it’s self and as you say hopefully, and you never know someone might be watching. Let’s watch this space as an EP box set with a yellow a submarine EP would be awesome! Thanks again for sharing Andrew. 👍
Great idea!
Great video, as usual. I would like to see an ep set but maybe also an alternative set selecting some foreign covers, as they did with the singles box set. Now that would be Fab!
Oh yes, I'd be up for that - great idea. Don't forget there's also the 'Baby It's You' mono EP from 1995.....
In the unforgettable words of Philip J Fry, "SHUT UP AND TAKE MY MONEY!" 😀Being in the States, an EP box would be especially welcome as the format never really caught on big here (even tho the majors tried since the early 50s), there were only the 2 Capitol and (I think) one VJ EPs. Hearing about the Long Tall Sally or Beatles Hits EPs is still somewhat foreign to a lot of us Beatlepeoples over here, so it'd be a neat way to hear the songs in a different way, not to mention the artwork & design! I'm in!
Andrew, you have my kudos - great respect to you...the Beatle market is overly-saturated with different stereo mixes, different mono mixes and longer fae-outs and on and on we go....I marvel when I watch these videos that you make it all look so easy, poring through everything, that is.
Much appreciated, Farrell.
Fantastic idea I’d love this to happen! I’m in 🍏
Yes, I’d love to see it being released soon! 😍 I have the singles and EPs box sets on CD and the vinyl singles box set, but I loved your idea, Andrew! 👏👏😉
Thanks Flavio!
I used to own a fantastic EP from the A Hard Day's Night era: I Should Have Known Better / If I Fell / Tell Me Why / And I Love Her. It was almost like listening to a 10-munite snippet of the film.
Another fine look at a product that Apple should seriously consider. As always, thank you Andrew. I really loved that Magical Mystery Tour box. It is so nicely done. I would love to see a similar package for Yellow Submarine. If Yellow Submarine were to get the deluxe work out they would include session outtakes for the dedicated songs, including the extended It's All Too Much. I would hope that a very nice video remaster would be included in BluRay and DVD as well as excerpts, maybe even outtakes from the Beatles filmed portions if they exist. Sadly it would have to be a discount box because there is just not as much outtake bonus materials.
When I was a kid in the 80's, my dad gave me his Beatles EP's since a lot of the songs were already on the LP's he had and it taught me how to look after records. I would love to get a Beatles EP box set because I love the format and my Australian EP's are different from the UK issued ones.
I Do have the EP Collection on CD and it sounds marvelous, quite content with it
If they don’t have flipbacks, we riot. I think we also need a Capitol singles box. Maybe a vinyl reissue of the US albums box set? Coloured vinyl set? What about some fun RSD releases? Australian alt covers? Beatles Oldies? Introducing the Beatles?
The 45 EP is my favourit format. I agree with all you say for the release of an EP box set. Bought all the 80's reissues, still have them. There was no MMT re-issue and EMI could re release it plus the other cancelled projects as bonus'. Glad you did this video, many record collectors speak of albums and singles, but EP's don't get as much attention, they are a 50's/60's popular record format which most of my music interest dates from.
You say there was no MMT re-issue in the 80's but the stereo copy, SMMT-1, was still around in the 1980's because I bought my copy from HMV on Oxford Street in 1980 and I vaguely recall that the mono copy was also there, but I could be wrong about that. It was a long time ago. I know there was a big push on reissue mono LPs around that time which I completely avoided. In the 70s and 80s stereo was king so why would I pick a disc with one channel when I could pick a disc with two. I am much older and wiser now and my collection contains both.
Good to see someone of my own persuasion. Most of my E.P.s are French who did not seem to issue singles and so when I was in France I bought Sylvie and Johnny on E.P. Ye-ye.
@@opussy Very Nice. I too have all Johnny Ep's on Phillips a couple of Vogue ones, Elvis, Duane Eddy, R 'n R etc.
@@ianz9916 The MMT was not part of the box set, a record shop I frequent had about 10 the other day. I didn't ask where they came from. Seem to be a lot around though.
@@ROCKINGMAN No it wasn't in a box set it was a standalone reissue in the 80s. It has a yellow lyrics sheet where the original one has a blue lyrics sheet.
I would welcome a fresh EP box set. Great idea!
Been wanting one of these for ages. I own four EPs myself (Long Tall Sally, Million Sellers, Hits, & Beatles For Sale No. 1) and they're fantastic little discs. Two of those (LTS&Hits) are 33rpm red vinyl EPs from Japan, and have a very distinct sound.
Yes to the EP Box set! Absolutely!
Definitely been on my mind lately. It's inevitable that they will do an EP box set. I just hope they do it on point like the 2014 mono box, NEEDS FLIPBACKS :)
Definitely a good idea. I still have the first 5 EP's from the 60's. They represent great sentimental value as there's no way my parents could afford to buy me LP's in those days.
I have the RSD reissue of “Long Tall Sally”, and it is spectacular.
Ill bite.great idea🔥 happy Easter my friend
I reckon one reason why EPs were so popular in the U.K. is because they had proper covers with photos and notes whereas our singles were in plain sleeves. EPs were more like mini albums and in effect spread the cost of an album. Whilst an EPs cost twice as much as a single, because of the cover you got more than twice as much value.
Your analysis of the ep collection is spot on!! All my eps up.. and German sounded better than the lps!! Thank you for your diligence and expert commentary!! Awesome work! Yes a reissue is a must!
Absolutely count me in! I have the 1981 EP box set, both mono and stereo MMT EPs, the Baby It's You EP and some US and French EPs. I'll gladly go for a new EP box set, especially with the Yellow Submarine tracks.
I've mentioned here before that my dream EP would be the songs from the Feb 68 sessions
A: Lady Madonna/Hey Bulldog
B: Across The Universe/The Inner Light
I did read that the EMI master tape for the proposed Yellow Submarine EP was for a 7-inch mono EP to play at 33⅓ RPM speed.
Here are the Capiphone EP set lineups,Andrew!!!The Odeon(1st one):Love Me Do(tambourine mix)/Boys/Standing There/Do You Want To know A Secret. The Capitols:1.It Won't Be Long/All My Loving/Not A Second Time/Money.2.Hold Me Tight/Little Child/Don't Bother Me /I Wanna Be Your Man.3.Any Time At All/When I Get Home/Slow Down Matchbox.4.Ill Cry Instead/Tell Me Why/Things We said Today/I'm Happy Just To Dance With you.5.Kansas City/Words Of Love/Honey Don't/Every Little Thing.6.No Reply/Mr.Moonlight/What You're Doing/Everybody's Trying to be my Baby.7.You Like Me Too much/Bad Boy/Tell Me What You See/Dizzy Miss Lizzie.8.Nowhere Man/Michelle/What Goes On/If I Needed someone .9.Drive My Car/Dr.Robert./I'm Only Sleeping/And Your Bird Can Sing. Most of these would have issued previous to or in-between the corresponding lp and single, had Capitol originally issued ( ,in the manner the project follows)in the '60's
That would be a great idea but I must say I would get a French EP box set if it was available in a heartbeat, I think it was an even more popular than the single format in France. (It is so common than I don't think I have ever seen a Beatles French single prior to 1967). Another great video!
Singles were not a format in France until 1967. The seven inch 45 rpm vinyl format was used for EPs only in France prior to 1967.
@@MsKnighterrant Thanks i didn't know! That would explain why then!
I'm personally satisfied with my Blue Box EPs from the early 80's. However, I'm intrigued by your suggested that a Yellow Submarine EP be produced. There's a huge amount of possibilities around that idea and I'm pretty sure there would be a welcoming market for it.
How about an EP box set in the 12 inch 45 rpm format! Those late 80s early 90s 12 inch singles used to sound really good. I have got some Cliff and the Shadows 12 inch EPs from Holland they look and sound fantastic.
Cool idea, Steve!
I'm all for it. C'mon Apple, let's do it!
Yes , I’d love to see a new Beatles Box Set !! 🥰🥰🥰
Excellent as always, Andrew. Thanks
I can’t wait for the next release!!!
great video from you Andrew
Thanks Arne!
I hope they do put out a Beatles EP box set. I'd definitely buy it!!!
Hi Andrew yes we need this set and soon
I bet Ringo would give it the tick of approval, he's a big advocate for the mighty E.P.!!
Not too long ago I realized that the scat singing at the end of PS I love you features three Beatles - John first, then Paul, then George.
I agree Andrew, a new EP collection box set would be a great release. Hopefully it will happen. Great video as always.
Thanks Michael!
A new ep box set sounds good .I would also like to see a vinyl box set of US albums
....or finish off the USA Capitol Lps onto Cds with a third CD box set that was not completed in the mid 2000s.
Andrew, I'm on board with this idea. EPs were not a thing here in the U.S., so these would be new to me. I did mange to score a copy of the "Long Tall Sally" RSD re-issue, but I'd love to have the whole set, with your suggested add-ons. I hope it happens.
I remember buying a few brand new Beatles EPs in the early to mid 80s. Still have them. They do look great. I fear a box set like this would sit pretty on a shelf, but wouldn’t get played very much. But it would look nice….
I do like that idea of wishful inclusion of the "Yellow Submarine" ep! And the fan art cover you pointed out is fab!
Being from the States, it's awesome to hear what the Beatles did with their back singles catalog as it was building up in the UK during the 60s. I would love to hear those EPs remastered, especially if some of the tracks used different source tapes from their LP counterparts.👍👍👍
Along with my Mum's Beatles singles, the EPs are the other thing she bought. Got rather dog-eared copies of Extracts from a Hard Day's Night and The Beatles Million Sellers. I agree a new EP vinyl collection would be very nice to see, because the EPs are often neglected when people think about The Beatles discography.
I think it would be great to have that.
The GEP 8899 catalogue number for 'The Beatles' Golden Discs' EP would place it between 'All My Loving' (GEP 8891, 7 February 1964) and 'Long Tall Sally' (GEP 8913, 19 June 1964).
I'd buy an EP box set in a heartbeat....great idea to include the mono Yellow Submarine EP too. Let's hope somebody at Apple is watching your channel!
I would absolutely love to see this come out this year.
Flip back laminated sleeves would be essential. ❤
I was lucky enough to buy the Long Tall Sally EP on the same day as I bought the Beatles For Sale LP in the second half of the 1970s. For one thing, the combination was more rock'n'roll than the Beatle albums I already had, especially Slown Down and Rock'n'Roll Music (one of the first CDs I bought was a Larry Williams best-of, particularly for his Slow Down and Bad Boy). There were a few tracks on the album that took a few plays to get under my skin (Mr Moonlight and I'll Follow The Sun, for example.
I see that Rutles LP back there❤
Agreed, Andrew; it would be a great addition. I still have my pristine originals, but a box set would be nice to have. I would pay more for the original UK artwork with the flipbacks. The Yellow Sub would be fantastic to have and would be a good place to have the unedited It's All Too Much.
I love EP’s!! I’ve collected all of the UK Beatles EP’s and the 2 US Capitol ones. Still on the hunt for the Vee Jay one.
