Another brilliant "consumer advice" video - I always find these EV real-world range tests really interesting... especially to see the "what-happens-when-it-dies" moment and also the % range vs claimed range (always going to be lower than "laboratory-tested" WLTP...!)
That's a preference setting. Once you decide which works better for you (miles remaining or battery % left) you never change it. Same with the steering column, you set it once and the car remembers it in your driver's profile, never need to change it. Oh, the horribly-difficult life of being a car reviewer, where you have to adjust all the settings while driving!
@@JoshTheFrosch07 Right, I should have worded the comment better, as its a preference setting. I like percentage more because estimated kilometers aren't always accurate, and in a trip you can/should watch the range from the energy tab. You'll agree with me that repeatedly showing the driver struggling to change the setting while driving is a clear jab to make it look like using the display is dangerous, when every owner literally sets it once based on their own preferences and then forgets about it!
21 miles difference between the Tesla 2 and Polestar. With the new OTA update and standard wheels on the Polestar my guess is nothing would be between them range wise with the Tesla winning on the charge speed front. Polestar is a nicer place to be and on standard suspension more comfortable. For me Model LR if you can tolerate the looks and build quality and sizeable additional cost, otherwise the Polestar is the better value proposition.
For those in US who are confused on the claimed mileage at first (including me). US uses EPA range while UK uses WLTP range which may make it looks like they have misused Model 3 LR range for model 3 Performance range.
There's a much simpler way to check the range on the Tesla, just view the Energy screen and it'll show you the range and efficiency. No faff. More accurate too. Plus if you're using sat-nav, it'll show the expected range on arrival, helpful for planning charge stops on long journeys.
It's just not more accurate, it's a real estimate. The range showed near battery icon is a static number that doesn't change depending on weather, driving, hills etc. They should have showed the Energy screen in this video tbh. :/
True. Also, not what the video intended, which is: look how inconvenient everything is on a Tesla, oh there's no instrument cluster, gotta keep tilting your head like an idiot, nobody's ever been able to get over that (Mini Cooper peeps?) and the screen is too bright because of course we're not mentioning the night mode, and I can't adjust the wheel position without going into the super-complicated menus but let's not point out that the wheel position is stored in the driver profile and no sane driver ever adjusts the wheel position while driving on the motorway, oh my days, the Polestar 2 (thanks for sponsoring us, btw) has so much nicer interior!
Matt misses a few points here : i) you don't have to use the menus to adjust everything in the 3 : it's profile-based : do once, forget about it. -> else, there is always the vocal commands : dome lights off .. or whatever. ii) switching from percentage to range is done by tapping the icon near the battery .. no need to go through the menus. iii) you can set the regen on an SR+ : low and standard (which, if battery is not full) will stop the car rather quickly .. ease off the accelerator to prolong the glide to a stop. iv) you prefer the darker theme : no problem, set it to dark (or night mode permanently). v) please don't look all over the screen when you drive (well) .. you simple use the steering, the pedal(s) and the speed : closest upper corner -- as easy as 1-2-3.
Hey Matt I love how your getting more into EV’s. It’s educating the public into hopefully looking out for the future of the planet. I feel like you should have included a NIO and Lucid Motors vehicle to compare in this type of distance race. Love the videos, keep it up.
Well, does your phone say 5h/60% in the status bar? Most phones (without notches) have that space but they still don't show it because people generally use just 1 metric. I haven't ever seen people changing it so many times in every drive
You can't get 100% of the advertised/expected range when you're doing all motorway miles. The estimated range is based on a mixed bag of driving, so of course it isn't reachable on a motorway.
@@v_isforvictory9366 Plenty of people do get the EPA range, some even more. It just requires more in town driving at lower average speeds. Of course tests like this are still important, getting well more than 250miles of range is more than enough for cross country drives
@@stinger15au I agree it's fine to compare cars against each other, but to complain that they aren't reaching their highest possible range number isn't. It's like complaining that a car won't achieve its best 0-60 time when it's raining or snowing or you're facing a 100mph head wind.
With some exceptions, most of the cars function that requires menu are something you rarely adjust (seats, steering wheel, etc.). A properly designed infotainment will have the most common functions on-screen by default.

@@recklessrogue9027 Sure, but you'd think they would mention that in this video and say something like "check the link in the description for that other video" etc., but nothing. A direct Polestar 2 - vs. - Model 3 LR makes the Polestar 2 seem as a bad value proposition (range- and performance-wise).
@@tavi_chocochip I admit with that being his favourite saying I was surprised he didn't mention it. Plus maybe they didn't want the Polestar looking too bad since it lost to the SR+ 😂
That was nicely done. I have the Standard Range Plus Model 3 and it works very well, but I do wonder if having the bigger battery would be worth the cost and the weight. I recognize that the performance would increase, but I am always on the verge of getting into trouble the SR+ due to its acceleration and speed as it is. Since mine is the pre-heat pump early 2020 Model 3, using your 79% estimate, we would get about 198 miles; which feels pretty realistic. I tend to charge to about 85 or 90% every two to three days after driving about 120 to 140 miles.
I have the Model 3 Long Range. It has almost the power of the M3P, but a little better range (353 miles). I can tell you from experience that if you use cruise control whenever possible you can get pretty close to the advertised range on the highway. I calculated how much I should deplete the battery on a trip out to a friend's farm and back, 54%; my actual use was 56%. The trip included some high-speed overtakes, but mostly auto-pilot matching traffic around me. Stop and go city driving uses a lot of energy, mitigated somewhat by the strong regenerative braking, which is is a joy once you get used to it. I'm so impressed that my next car will most likely be a Tesla Model S
Been waiting for another one of these range videos for 6 months. Thanks and keep them coming. Range and efficiency is the biggest factor buying an electric vehicle
Polestar is beautiful but the car underpinnings/ chassis is from Volvo ICE stable. When Polestar are able to divert away more Volvo the weight will go down and range improve
I think the range is fine for most people. I can't think of any time where I've had to go that far and not also needed to rent a vehicle simply to get a much larger vehicle to fit in all my stuff. The range is not bad, it's just not the best out there. For anyone who has a normal commute, it will work well. And since you charge it at night you don't have the inconvenience a small gas tank brings you.
@@Nickbaldeagle02 but I mean, there are more petrol/Diesel filling stations and they are much quicker, though I do think petrol economy tests would be pretty useful.
Just drove from southern Marryland to Alexandria Va in my long range RwD Tesla 3. Averaged 193 watts per mile in 46 degree f weather. Only had my seat heater going. Mostly stop and go driving. Average speed about 50 mph. This is where electric cars are most efficient. At that rate I could go over 300 miles on a full charge.
I agree, it's a pity there is no support of fast-charging above 150kW. I haven't seen a P2 charge over 100kW at least. Currently there are only three brands that support fast charging i e Porsche, Audi and Tesla. The Taycan and Audi GT are basically the same car. Some cars definitely needs to improve CW and loose weight, Tesla is in another league to be honest, or more than five years ahead of the competition.

So this was before the update... Also if Polestar could cheese it like Tesla does it, it will run longer. What does i mean with cheesing it? Tesla run their AWDs mostly on the rear motor, and the front motor on demand. That's why it have slightly higher energy consumption as SR+. Polestar 2 runs its both motors constantly, making it have a higher consumption than actually needed. And how does I know its using mostly its rear motor, well it have been tested on slippery Norwegian roads, where the tail slips out before the front grabs in and steer it strait again. Its noticeable that front is inactive on normal driving in these conditions. Also an inactive motor also slightly regen... So front motor is on demand not permantly on like Polestar 2. Also Polestar 2 dont have heat pump until recently. The same goes for Model 3, as Musk was against heat pump in the start. So If Polestar/Volvo did the same it will increase range major. But then again it will be as nervous as the Model 3 is on slippery roads, commonly known on RWD cars. Just going 20/80 would increase range alot on the Polestar/Volvo and 50/50 on demand. Compared to Tesla 0/100 and 50/50 on demand. But then again we can pull the Tesla argument. Polestar is a newer company than Tesla so give them some slack, like the 10 years Tesla been making cars and still are considered new company... But i rather take the Polestar 2 before picking any Tesla, and I just ordered the XC40 because its a better car than Tesla overall. Also I dont want to give money to Musk! I rather give it to the chinese! And wisphers is that EU gonna force Tesla to open up their charger network
@@davidkerr4103 Totally agree, I just installed it actually and there is a noticeable difference. I was also frankly irritated they optioned the Polestar - to the tune of 5k - with the 20 inch alloys, not that standard 19. The ' performance pack' in the Polestar doesn't actually offer any extra performance - it offers about 12-18 miles DECREASE in range in the tests I've watched online switching between the 20 inch alloy options you get with the 5k extras, versus the standard 19's. All that being said, the basic Tesla would still have had a better range - but not by much. Maybe next time they can get the Polestar to tow a caravan or something while doing the test, or fill the boot with lead bars. 🙄
I'm on Tesla site now. It shows 360m for long range and 352m for performance. Simple: you DON'T flip through the menus while driving, because those are settings you adjust once, when you first get into the car (including wheel and side mirrors position). Any Model 3 owner will tell you that they quickly decide whether they prefer battery % or miles of range left, and they never again touch that. If you really need to see both, you bring up the Energy screen and leave that on.
You don’t flip through anything when actually driving it. There is very little you use the screen for when actually driving. Also there is natural voice control for everything. You can even say “make it warmer, navigate to...”
No need to flip through the menu. You set it up once and it saves onto your profile. Matt is doing it here to check different settings that you wouldn’t actually need as an owner during driving.
Still say if they are doing it to make a point them messing around with the settings when driving is still very distracting, and I would argue is quite dangerous to do.

Mat, you don't need to go into the setting of the Tesla to change between predicted range and battery percentage. In fact, what you were doing is toggling between the "rated" range and percentage. The range by the battery icon does NOT update depending on your driving style. To get the estimated range based on driving conditions and actual consumption, you need to go to the energy app, or simply use the voice control and say "Open Energy app".
@@dagnut I'd say they are for the average person. At least the teslas are for sure, considering how many toilet breaks they took during this test. Honestly, I'm almost never going to need 300 km range so for me this is a tie. The question one should ask when buying a car is not what car has the longest range, it is what car has enough range for 99.9% of the time.
Exactly this. I’m constantly seeing comments on EV videos, about people complaining about the lack of range, or, they need 500 mile range. Are that many people really driving 500 daily miles? 🤔 The official UK average daily mileage for 2019 puts the position at 20.7 miles 😲⚡️👍🏻
I do actually need about 400km to be comfortable visiting work sites all over the State of NSW. Luckily that's roughly 250 Miles and many cars like the Model 3 Long Range can easily do that. Just need to keep using my current nice ICE car until it's old.
That’s just poor video sound editing. If you check out other videos on RUclips of the Polestar vs Tesla, where reviewers test interior noise using a decibel meter the P2 is quieter.

Because you're not supposed to keep switching between the two settings lol. Percentage is far better after a couple of days of getting used to it.
That's a preference setting. Once you decide which works better for you (miles remaining or battery % left) you never change it. Same with the steering column, you set it once and the car remembers it in your driver's profile, never need to change it.
This is the hardest I've seen Mat work in this job😂
For those in US who are confused on the claimed mileage at first (including me). US uses EPA range while UK uses WLTP range which may make it looks like they have misused Model 3 LR range for model 3 Performance range.
'Non-stop on the M25'
That's never been done before. There's literally always stops.
Matt: Races Tesla
Elon Musk: Free of CHARGE
Matt misses a few points here :
i) you don't have to use the menus to adjust everything in the 3 : it's profile-based : do once, forget about it.

It looks like an old mans car. It’s dull.

The British use these units themselves. But I agree. They should have more units.
I had to switch between Chrome and RUclips all time for conversion, would appreciate the conversion in video too
So this was before the update...

I feel that people flipping through all these menus on the dashboard is just as dangerous as being on the phone . How is that legal ?

That's one thing I like about Tesla is that the infrastructure is brilliant.
I love when you can hear the engines revving
Interesting video. I have a '21 Model 3 LR AWD (slightly better range than the P), and I would really love even more range, so I guess there really is no other EV brand for me, at the moment. Really like the car though; can't imagine any other car in that price segment that I would like more (that's because EV's are 100% tax free in my country though).
