That is hilarious that Milt Kahl never felt compelled to draw, and yet he's one of the most famous and successful animators to have ever lived. He got so good at it that the head waggle he gave characters he animated is almost his calling card. Also, I watched that Ferdinand the Bull short many, many times as a child and never knew it was Milt's voice.
Yep I think almost every animator has had to draw a scene or character they didn't want to. I think what motivates most animators is seeing all the drawings come together as the final result.
Milt was always bitter that he didn't get to animate Captain Hook and Cruella DeVil. In animating Medusa in The Rescuers, he was trying to top Marc Davis' animation of Cruella. He didn't. Medusa is more flamboyant and her gestures overly exaggerated, but it takes more than that to make a great villain.
@@SuperAlfern He was and he wasn't. At that point Milt, Frank Thomas and Ollie Johnson were essentially animation directors who directed story sessions, coached actors on dialogue, designed the characters they were animating... Medusa was all Milt's creation. I always look at Medusa as being inspired by Carol Burnett, who was hugely popular at the time. I can't look at Medusa and not see Carol.
Madame Medusa is a superb villain and she is brilliantly animated. She's also one of the more realistic Disney villains in that her motives and character traits are more down-to-earth. She's a normal person seeking believable and ultimately achievable goals. No 'want to rule the world,' 'turns into a dragon,' 'has magic at her disposition,' 'wants to be the prettiest' nonsense. Cruella de Vil is another great villain, but her actual character is not as well developed as Madame Medusa's.
That is not Mill Valley, CA. Wikipedia says he lived in Mill Valley, maybe, but that is Corte Madeira Creek on the Greenbrae side near the doctor’s offices and retiree apts. I lived three blocks from this area across from Bon Air. Mill Valley, my ass.
"Iy-Iy-Iy-I'm not smart enough to think of more than one thing at a time!"
Anyone?
I couldn't put the book down.

"i-i won't do it, anymore."
Despite the fact a lot of animators can't help themselves now... haha
Using it right now to teach myself animation, might be the only book you need starting out if you have draftsmsnship down.
Amazing how Disney animators can draw in Sharpie without a single error
Muscle memory:)
Well, if you had to draw 8-10 hours a day after unionization, you’d draw that well too.
start drawing in only pen and you'll find you make far far less mistakes very quickly

It’s akin to one of the great French BD/comic book creators; Jean-Claude Mézières, who hated the actual drawing process.

I can't count how many times I've re-watched this..I love hearing him talk. I wish there was more Milt kahl footage out there.
I wanna see footage of Milt going off somebody! 😂😂
He seems so healthy and vibrant here. It's surprising to me that he passed away only a few years later.
Are you suggesting foul play
@@reginaldforthright805No.
man alive what a leap@@reginaldforthright805
He was very critical about his Disney work as other people are enthusiastic about it.
The footage of him drawing is priceless.
No, it’s freely available on the popular video sharing site, RUclips.
@@reginaldforthright805 For the present.
He seemed like a really neat guy. Very focused on his work.
It's weird to see them speak their mind and not have it squeegeed clean by Disney
Im so happy that walt gave him privledge to just go wild and let loose with his skills
I'd say Frank Thomas's Captain Hook was Disney's best character design. That said, Milt Kahl's Madam Mim was another superb creation.
Fantastic, I'd previously only seen these clips in piss poor quality- thanks a ton.
Super confident.
Thank you, Sir Dunky.
I had no idea he was the voice of Ferdinand the Bull!! 😂
"I could never have done anything like that."
- Milt Kahl, Cinderella
if everybody was a Milt kahl haha said it with a straight face and I agree to it haha
What a legend.
Genius of all genuises
it is seen that khal in his personality was very serious and somewhat shy
Interviewer: Everybody always says ‘Milt Kahl is the best animator there ever was.
Milt Kahl: That’s nice, I like to hear that.
*Fuckin Legend*
Muchos saludos maestro de la animacion !!!

@@emmagrove6491 That makes sense. I still think Medusa looks harder to animate though.
@@SuperAlfern Harder to draw for sure! Milt had a really hard time finding any assistant that could draw as well as he could.

Apuesto que esta cosa se volverá popular xD
Why he never do some director work?
its a whole different job than what he wanted.

Great talent no doubt but I also see an egomaniac 😬
