    The career of this formidable athlete spawned well over two (!) decades. He started playing great at 16yo and he stopped at 40th, playing almost at the same level. At his career peak (a very long period) he was indisputably the best defender around. During his career Maldini has played along and against the best, the greatest players of that time; playing alway at great levels.
    He was a natural right foot but he has played left back almost his entire career. The best two-footed indisputably.
    Gifted with a well maintained athletic body and highly skilled technically, Maldini has been the first of his kind (other like him have been Beckenbauer, Cruyff, Di Stefano). He could have had played almost everywhere so great was its understanding of the game (a bit like Xavi at Barca).
    There is no much sense about lists of who is the greatest. But surely if such a thing exists, Maldini will be among the best five of them. He has played - as a key player - in some of the most acclaimed football team, winning a massive amount of trophies. Pity he has won none for the Italian national team.

      @MB
      He didn't walk out ,his manager sent him home, after accusing him of faking an injury ,and reneging upon a promise he had made in Keane's house, that the preparations would be sorted (they turned up without footballs or bibs......the press and suits traveled in 1st class, whilst the players were in the back of the plane for 14 hours, the players were eating fucking cheese sandwiches instead of the pasta's and cereals that pro footballers eat before a match)
      Paul Mcgrath was one of our greatest players ,but had a serious drinking problem.
      Two days before a crucial EC qualifier ,that same manager (McCarthy) had organized a night out at a concert.
      Terrified of drinking again ,McGrath went up to his room to sleep.
      McCarthy wouldn't allow that ,he insisted that McGrath join them ,who ended up on a wild bender ,dropped from the squad by McCarthy the next day ,effectively retiring him.
      Kinda McGraths fault I hear you say ,he didn't have to drink ,or that much right?
      But surely you are also saying that the manager made a massive mistake in
      A: Organizing a night of drinking before a game
      B: Forcing a known, terrified alcoholic out of his room ,towards alcohol
      How about Denis Irwin? Think he was a bad player? Or caused much trouble?
      McCarthy also dropped Irwin from a WC qualifier ,saying that "Irwin had to prove himself"
      .....a Man U legend ...at 32 with Prems and CL's .....needed to prove himself?
      Irwin retired the next day.
      Wanna say that McGrath and Irwin walked on their country?
      Or that is too many examples of a weak manager, forcing his best players out of the squad?
