    This is amazing. I already own a MiSTer, I just need a CPS 2 cabinet and a MiSTerCade if I want to build an arcade machine. NeoGeo, CPS1, CPS2 all on the same cabinet? Hell yeah. That's $1000 or more just for boards and multi-game carts I don't need to spend.

    • @ScarletSprites
      @ScarletSprites  3 года назад +2

      I totally agree. You will always have collectors of the things they really love (I'm not unloading my Neo Geo carts), but for the more casual games you just want to play? This more than suffices. It's an amazing bang for the buck.

    The questions you asked at the end of this video are there same questions I've asked myself but for me it's about the retro consoles I own and collect for. If I setup a MiSTer would I "really" need to collect anything anymore just to put on a shelf, since in actuality, would I want to connect and disconnect my aging consoles anymore. The cost of recap kits, the prices of restoring them, buying upscalers/line doublers, expensive high quality cables for them all and/or buying expensive multi-carts or modding CD drives to use SD cards... The MiSTer is looking more and more worth the value and peace of mind when wanting to play your old retro games. 😭 You have a stick ass setup brother! 🤟😋

    • @ScarletSprites
      @ScarletSprites  3 года назад +3

      There are for sure certain games I love that I just want in my collection. Physical copies of those types of games are what I think I will continue to own. It’s tough to want to chase down something like Willow though. I like it, it’s cool, I’ll play it...but I’m not married to it in any overly special way. In that case, there’s no need for me to chase down the pcb and spend $100s on it.
      I definitely like collecting original hardware too. I have a hard time letting go of consoles, but I have done it. I’m much more likely to sell a game than I am hardware if we’re talking consoles.
      Good stuff though, and everyone is going to have their own spin on how this affects them.

  • @frtariki

    Great video, thanks! I've been pursuing to get multi capabilities on three systems (CPS2, MVS, and Sega Naomi), but in Brazil, the cost is insanely high. So far, I managed to get a Naomi NetDIMM and a (very poor substitute) 161-in-one cartridge for the MVS; but considering the cost of adquiring a Darksoft CPS2 Multikit and a Terraonion NeoSD Pro, I think you just convinced me to go the FPGA route!

    • @ScarletSprites
      @ScarletSprites  3 года назад

      If I was in your situation I’d probably go FPGA route. Sadly, this won’t cover Naomi for you yet but with the Saturn core seeing developments there is at least maybe some sliver of hope that some day it could happen. I’ve always heard 3D is much harder to do FPGA style.

  • @_kikaso

    Fantastic video!
    To answer your question, I’ll still keep buying multis and original boards within reason, however, I can no longer justify buying expensive boards already on MiSTer (or soon to come) that hold no nostalgia value. I went through the same thing with consoles. I got rid of most of my 8- and 16-bit console games in favor of one MiSTer setup. I kept all of my original games from childhood and I’ll still play those on original hardware. As long as I have a working cabinet with CRT, I’ll keep playing SFII: CE on original hardware. I like multis because they still give the original hardware experience. I may be in the minority but I also like working on old arcade hardware. I’ll pick up the MiSTercade day one.

    • @ScarletSprites
      @ScarletSprites  3 года назад +1

      I totally get that. I think that that question isn't going to have a true black and white answer. I think you'll see a lot of people take a hybrid approach. The games that truly matter to people from a nostalgic standpoint will continue to be ones they chase after or hold onto. The ones they just want to play? Probably ok for FPGA. I definitely think multi purchases will be a split decision too.

    Great video, I'm so excited for this. I have to say when you started playing SF2 I did immediately think about the DarkSoft CPS1 Multi, I'm sure it will be brilliant but I should imagine the Mister/MisterCade will probably be cheaper and is definitely more versatile. With boards falling over all time it's hard to not see FPGA as the future.

    • @ScarletSprites
      @ScarletSprites  3 года назад

      There’s definitely room for both. I suspect more than a few people will even buy both. I guess I just don’t know how many people will decide FPGA is good enough. The arcade crowd is pretty loyal to original hardware so I can certainly see the DS kits continuing to do really well.

    • @ScarletSprites
      @ScarletSprites  3 года назад +8

      Northeast is tough for Candy cabs in general. They’re tough to find or they’re expensive, usually both. I wouldn’t shy away from a smaller Dynamo cab. Usually used for SF2 they have control panels for six buttons ready to go and will be much more plentiful. Also, larger though.

    Even if this wasn't going into a cabinet, this would still be cool to use through JAMMA to play those arcade titles that didn't run through JAMMA to begin with. As long as your supergun of choice has an RGB or Component out option you're set to play on any good CRT or upscaler like the OSSC. Many superguns also allow DB15 and USB connections for controllers these days to, pretty nifty if your prefer to play with a USB arcade stick, USB retro controllers like the Saturn or SNES options that exist, modern controllers like the PS4 or Xbox One and anything with a DB15 connector like Neo Geo or any custom DB15 DIY stick. Still not sure about the overall price of a MISTER though, the money spent on one can be spent on most real JAMMA arcade boards with some change to spare. Again though, the advantage would be to play the arcade games that were not originally JAMMA.

    • @ScarletSprites
      @ScarletSprites  3 года назад

      That’s for sure a nice perk; avoiding any adapters you’d otherwise need like you mentioned. As far as the Supergun goes though, I’d probably just skip the MiSTerCade addon entirely and just roll with MiSTer to keep things simple.

    I am new to Mister and I wonder if there is a way to make it a seamless arcade experience:
    - Can it autoload the last game on startup? Is there a procedure to turn it off or do you simply power off your cabinet like you would with the real hardware?
    - Can you configure the ingame menu hotkey on something else than the cabinet’s panel? It would be nice to have something similar to the MVS unibios « arcade protect » mode (use of test / service switches combination to access the mister menu for instance).

    • @ScarletSprites
      @ScarletSprites  3 года назад

      You can have it boot to the last core upon startup. There is a ten second countdown for this. I’m told that is needed in order to fully initialize the ram. Think of it the same as a normal pcb, you would just power down the cabinet. Some cores will support hot key menu but not all. For now I find having the keyboard best.

    Such great video dude. I'm really lookong forward to the CPS2 core and have patreon for Jotego. Puzzle fighter 2 is a game I remember spending far too much time on the PS1 back in the day and it's amazing playing it again on an arcade stick. When marvel Vs capcom is released I may have to stump up the cash for an astro city candy cab. I think the mister project is one of the best things to happen to the arcade scene. I just hope that there is some way we can see a revival of arcades of old. With the development of mister, the expensive failing PCBs can be sent of to a museum/collector and replaced with mistercades. I just hope that the industry looks into a way of doing this to bring some money and development of the mister FPGA project. I would rather see this happen than it go down the route of capcom and the final burn catastrophe that happened with the capcom home arcade. I'm sure if money was to be ploughed back into the project more of these old boards could be documented/simulated in the same way the mame project has done. The difference is we will have near perfect accuracy it terms of speed and more importantly the sound.

    That looks fantastic. The only downside is that you can't run vertical games properly due to the cores not being able to rotate - you would need to run a scaler mode, which probably wouldn't work on a 15hz arcade monitor, it doesn't on my Sony PVM.

      Candy Cabs will vary by region. It's way easier to get them on the West Coast than other locations, but not impossible. I'd watch local listings (FB Marketplace, Craigslist, etc.) for something with a six button setup. I know they don't have the core support, but would be nice to have direct connection for 2x Konami kick harnesses for games like Turtles/Simpsons/X-Men. Granted, each of those are 15 pin each for a total of 30, and the Capcom is 34. So should be able to get them to work with either a re-pin but ideally an adapter harness.

    • @billyelliotx
      @billyelliotx 3 года назад +1

      @@ScarletSprites Realize I had a long winded response. But thanks for the time to respond to my original comment.
      I agree, the cores need work. It's basically my dream to get the Konami 4 player cores on the MiSTer. I know there is interest but it's on core developer's back burner at the moment while they have other projects. I still think the hardware needs to look at the future, or at least allow flexibility with the kick plug for expandability. it would suck to get the cores and the MiSTerCade doesn't support their kick harnesses because it was only wired for a CPS. CPS only uses 11 of 34 connections to get up to 6 buttons per player. So I'm just worried they have those empty connections not hooked up, or not enough inputs available to make adapter harnesses.
      Sure, I could make a custom Konami kick -> USB controller and plug that into the MiSTer but that kinda defeats the purpose of the MiSTerCade's simplicity. Since you can already hook the MiSTer up to a Jamma with a JPac and a few extra aux boards.
      Would you by chance know the pin out of the board connector? Neither the Konami or CPS kicks used all their pins, but it would be nice to have upwards of 30 pins available for buttons to map. The Konami harnesses only uses 10 pins per kick of the 15 (20 total for player 3/4) for 3 button, up/down/left/right, coin, start, ground. If you wanted to have a layout that was 4/6/6/4 buttons for a good multi-cade control panel. You'd still need another 6 pin inputs and 2 ground (could do common ground to save pins) to add buttons 4/5/6 for player 1/2. That would give you 28 even without combining grounds, so could work with the CPS kick if it has the inputs. That should pretty much have you covered for probably 99% of 1-4 player arcade control board setups in a single cab.

    • @ScarletSprites
      @ScarletSprites  3 года назад +1

      At this point I think you can expect any 3P or 4P extensions (for games that would support it) to be handled via a USB encoder.

It means that this is taking longer but definitely won’t be pushed out half baked.

    Really tempted to buy a MISTer and say goodbye to all sorts of MAME.

      Imo it’s a lot easier of a setup process and you won’t get tied down in the weeds of scraping and all the other UI bloat. Just know that not everything is available in MiSTer yet so you may want to hang on to that RetroPie/PC a bit longer.

    Tested SFII: Hyper Fighting on your MiSTer? If so, does it feel like the correct speed? Thanks 👍🏼

      Very briefly, but yes. It's a harder game for me to gauge from a "feel" standpoint because I play Champion Edition so much more. Overall though, gut and subjective reaction is that its pretty great. I wouldn't know the difference unless you told me I was playing FPGA.

    What happens on startup? Can you just turn the power of the cabinet on(or strip of cabinets) and it goes into a game?

      You can have it boot to the menu or change a setting to “boot last core”. In the case of the latter it will load the last core you played ten seconds after booting up.
