Latvian traditional song. It's a celebration of Summer, love and life!
Lammas is the harvest (August) and Ligo the Latvian celebration of the beginning of Summer. Filmed in Navarre Late Spring/Summer 2018
Pd. I don't speak Latvian so I hope I pronounced it right. It was done with my utter love and respect for this celebration and traditions.

Lai redzēja mīļā Māra līgo, līgo,
    Kā niedrīti dziedināti, līgo.
    līgo, līgo, lī

    Līgo

    Līgo itself means "Sway"

    līgo, līgo, lī
    līgo, līgo, līgo
Goddess of darkness, goddess of fog līgo, līgo,
Was being purified on the other side of the lake līgo.
Reeds are thundering, flowers with long stalks whispering līgo, līgo,
Their voices tempt me into the shrubs and reeds by the lake līgo.
    līgo, līgo, lī
    līgo, līgo, līgo
Lightly I walked over the water of the lake līgo, līgo,
    Like a light-winged bird līgo.
I knew a golden reed līgo, līgo,
To be on their side of the lake līgo.
    līgo, līgo, lī
    līgo, līgo, līgo
    līgo, līgo, lī
    līgo, līgo, līgo
I shakily reached my destination and found līgo, līgo,
Finding my broken golden reed līgo.
With dozens of young girls wreaths līgo, līgo,
The lakeside was scattered (with them) līgo.
    līgo, līgo, lī
    līgo, līgo, līgo
    līgo, līgo, lī
    līgo, līgo, līgo
Goddess of darkness, goddess of fog līgo, līgo,
    Raise your woolen cape, līgo.
So that dear Māra (Goddess Mother Earth) līgo, līgo,
Knows how to heal my reed līgo.

Summer Solstice is a very special celebration for any Latvian. No matter where we are, no matter what we do, we feel the peak in the nature as it approaches the shortest night of the year. The leaves are the greenest, the flowers- brightest and we begin to sing Līgo songs. Just once a year, for few short days, but so necessary for our souls. We watch sun set, we burn our last year's crowns in bonfires that keep the light through the night and we watch a new sun rise the next morning.. I truly hope, you can join the magic that is Summer Solstice in Latvia.

Actually I made this as a compliment to a Latvian friend but in the process I fell in love with some of your traiditional songs... son don't discard the chance another Latvian is shared next year when I have the time to record it. Oh that's such a huge compliment, it was originated as a kind of little challenge to surprise a fellow Latvian friend, and kind of grew on me and ended up doing a video. I was concerned because I do not speak Latvian and I was worried I would not be understandable or I would sound funny. I tried my best and tried to locate places around me that I thought would look "similar" in spirit... and that's how a little corner from Spain became Latvia (at least in Spirit) for Līgo

I have spent some solstices wearing garlands and bathing in rivers, celebrating my own LIgo without knowing of their tradition... and I felt, this is something I've done by intuition... the video expetended as a Harvest celebration too... it's time to collect the fruits of our work kind of metaphor too.

If you know of old Latvian songs, better if public domain I'm open for recommendations. There is one at least I know I'll give a try. Yes, I am not Latvian Speaker but I tried my best to be clear, of course with respect and being aware that as not native it might not be perfect, but I thought Ligo is such a perfect way to worship the goods that the "light" brings in Nature. Getting close now. Guess I'll wear a garland and go dip my feet by a creek.

Don't worry if you didn't get some of the wording right (from my ear you got it right.) What is important about Latvian folk music is that it comes from the depths of the heart. That's something the vocal cords cannot master. You did absolutely Great! Dare I say even better then some Native Latvians Sing it. It was so beautifully traditionally. Brought tears to this Latvians eyes. Thank you! And the Nature scenery went PREFECT with the song! Latvians were the very last Nature Worshiping Pagans of Europe. Nature still to this day plays a VERY heart string in us.

Thank you, that really sweet, especially if you think it honours the tradition of your country. I made this with absolute respect for the name day of a Latvian friend who is always tempting me to visit for Midsummer celebrations, she's so sweet, and I sense the love for Nature in it. It's something beautiful, you have such a beautiful heritage. I know my pronunciation may not be perfect, I am Spanish in fact but I tried by best also to scout landscapes I thought were similar or close in spirit. I will be wearing a garland and going to a creek for the day :) I've learned other two songs in Latvian since but I've not had time to record them yet :) Thanks for leaving such beautiful message, it really made my day.

@@yidneth, when you get a chance to come to Latvia for Līgo, try one of the places where they still do it more or less authentically - Zosēni, for example (literally that place name means Ducklings :)) with many bonfires, traditional costumes, folk songs, burning a big cartweel with hay and rolling it off the hill, midnight swimming in a lake, etc. That's something that stays with you forever and I wish you could experience it one day.

As a Latvian-American. I do not say this litely Priscilla sings this very ancient and Traditional Song for Holy Mid Summer. So movingly and so sacredly it brings tears to this Latvian's eyes. Your not going to find a more beautiful redition of the song here on RUclips.
Ligo is the Latvian Mid Summer (June 21st) Hoildays which is a 3 day National Hoilday in Latvia to this day. It hark en's back directly to our Pagan Earth Worshiping Days. Though Latvia is largely Christian today due to Christian occupation beginning in 13th Century. All Latvians are strongly pround and passionate about our Pagan Roots. An still celebrate the Old Faith Traditions.
    English Translation of the Song:
    Līgo

Vort, I would slightly disagree with your assessment that Māra is the most important goddess. Laima is equally important. Both were prayed to, or invoked, equally. Whereas Māra's domain is, as you said, the earth, she is also invoked when asking for health, successful child-bearing and wellness of people. Laima is the goddess of fate, she was invoked to ask for a blessed and happy life and later, for example, when older, a happy marriage with a compassionate, loving and hard-working husband or wife.

The Heritage of every country (even if Latvia is not my own) is beautiful, their legends, their traditions... the beauty of worshipping our mother Nature... it's different and it's the same, it's something that makes each one unique and also "join" us. Such a quandary :)

Latvian Pagan here. Ligo a small correction. Ligo is the 3 day celebration of Mid Summer June 21. Not Lammas (August). In Latvian beliefs the Supreme Sky God comes to Earth that night and rides the country side in his white stallion To check in on his creation humans. He's greeted in Bonfires across entire country side. In Celebration. It also makes God's victory over the Dark half of the year (Winter) Ligo is also the Grand Sabbat of the Ragana's (Witches which in Latvia are not a bad thing)

    • @yidneth
      @yidneth  5 лет назад

I know Ligo is in Midsummer but video premiered later and was filmed from Spring till harvest that is why it has both tags. I did this for a Latvian friend whose name day was in August but sang a traditional midsummer song, all in all I did as a tribute to the light half of the year. Thanks for the aclaration though.

This is so beautiful! Latvian folk music is divine... the only thing which is wrong here is spring flowers. This is a midsummer song, celebrated and sand during the years shortest night June 21st. We stay up all night, dance and eat and drink and wait for the sunrise... I would be perfect it that was filmed in early summer setting. Otherwise wonderful. Thank you.

    • @yidneth
      @yidneth  2 года назад +2

I know Līgo is a Midsummer song but in order to have the video for the date I had to film in advance, it was also made for a Latvian friend on her saint day and was a surprise I made that year. Tried my best. I always bathe in tge creek and weave garlands and she told me that was her customs, so fell in love with it and Dainas songs, like somehow belonging because I always celebrated, though hope to experience it in Latvia one day. So the video goes to midsummer in the last verse as all is "ripening" and getting ready for the harvest, if you notice there is a timeline in the video that goes from midspring until it welcomes summer. I filmed for many different days so you could see the fields turn gold from green so the idea of summer bounty is there. For the same reason I had to use a fake garland because even if I wanted it would wither and not stay well for such a long filming span. It took around four months during the wheel if the year. And Līgo Līgo, thanks for stopping by my rendition especially today

Priscilla, if you want to get a better understanding of the Latvian folk instrument kokle and how to play it, Jēkabs Zariņš, a Latvian from Britain currently lives in Madrid. He has various videos on RUclips that show how to play folk songs on the kokle. I'd like to suggest reaching out to him.

    • @yidneth
      @yidneth  4 года назад +2

I wish I could afford lessons, and maybe one day, I will check his videos though. Mine is a kantele (though instrument so far as I know is the same) I have a 10 string and a 26 string, as most of what I play is self-taught and I try my best. I'm happy to be able to layer it in my music (I mostly compose my own original) and I love the bell sound of it. I can do more complex arrangements and play it with strummed chords too but not "while" I'm singing yet so I usually leave those for recordings. I also love the big ones with levers, though I guess for those you need years of training. I want to highlight I play up to 15 instruments but I'm not proficient at any, :) I'm a composer mostly and if I handle better maybe is with piano. I have made another Latvian song about people lost at sea, the kokle will be also very simple on that one, I have not released yet because somehow I find it more difficult to pronounce, google translator is not helping and I have a spoken read version from some Latvian friends (one of which I honoured with this song on her name day). I know not every word will be perfect but is done with utter respect and the right heart. I simply love European folk, from many countries, and honestly this tradition is one of the most beautiful. I also find the sonority of the Baltic language enticing even if I an only "mimic". Thanks for the suggestion, I will scout his videos though probably will just aknowledge my deficiency in the instrument with I totally admit :**

It sings to Mara (Mother Earth) and talk about going to the creek with a broken reed and ask Mara to heal it, it's also a song about light and midsummer, and the blessings of Harvest. Thank you, I think the translation into English is pinned in comments

Thank you very much! I have many songs that are kind of seasonal in the channel, or that I have picked because of being meaningful to mark a point in the Wheel of the Year :) this one was done to honour a Latvian friend, :) but also it's our mark in the channel for Midsummer :)

This captures the vibrancy of summer, and you really went all in on visuals of flora and fauna, and the daffodils give a slight nod back to springtime, now fading from view.
Ooh, seeing that tall grass just *_really_* stresses just me out though; I can feel the ticks! :O I've become *_very_* good as screening them over the years. lol
Overall though, your rendition of the song is lovely. teehee Thank you and love you!

The song starts in Spring with green grass and finishes in Summer with golden wheat. I always celebrated my own way weaving garlands and bathing so this tradition resonates close. Plus latvian songs mention many mother goddesses of nature and I love that. In this song Tumsas matte miglas matte (mother fog, mother darkness) and Mara (bringer of the harvest)

It is so lovely to watch wheat progress through life; the little grains expand with green life, only to yellow and fade from view during the hottest time of year summer. Even if they can never see their own children rise again from the soil, fruits of labor cannot be denied.
It is refreshing to hear acknowledgement of fog and darkness; too often focus is placed on summer sun, but its only one aspect of nature;. Morning mist is the only thing that sustains some flora through the dry season where I live. So its an important part of the wilderness, even if most people don't find it 'picturesque'. We should aim for balance.
Hopefully the air was clear enough of smoke for you to truly enrich yourself on the solstice (since I know fire is still in your area) in tradition. Even if its not the solstice, there will always be other summer nights to make your own magic.

Saludos desde este lado del charco desde España, en Latvia hay diosas o "madres" que se encargan de diferentes aspectos de la naturaleza, madre de la niebla, madre de la oscuridad, madre tierra, varias se mencionan.
