Summer Solstice is a very special celebration for any Latvian. No matter where we are, no matter what we do, we feel the peak in the nature as it approaches the shortest night of the year. The leaves are the greenest, the flowers- brightest and we begin to sing Līgo songs. Just once a year, for few short days, but so necessary for our souls. We watch sun set, we burn our last year's crowns in bonfires that keep the light through the night and we watch a new sun rise the next morning.. I truly hope, you can join the magic that is Summer Solstice in Latvia.

Actually I made this as a compliment to a Latvian friend but in the process I fell in love with some of your traiditional songs... son don't discard the chance another Latvian is shared next year when I have the time to record it. Aww you are sweet, wish I could play kokles like you did, and well now trying to make sure I pronounce next well enough so thanks for your video tips. Līgo seems such a lovely tradition. I love Nature. My own original music also roots in it. Thanks for stopping by.
Līgo is such a beautiful celebration that sadly on many occasions nowadays has turned into a BBQ with lots of beer. But your interpretation of this song moved me to tears as it captures the essence of Līgo. I was blown away ♥️ I could listen to it on repeat all day long. Very well done! Hope to hear you sing more Latvian folksongs as it's like a balm to one's soul.
I am honoured. For me it is a tradition to worship Nature and be grateful of the gifts it brings in the light time of the year. Hope to see Līgo in Latvia one day, I will wear a garland and find a creek. I would live to sing more latvian songs. Any recommendation of old traditionals? Have a blessed solstice/līgo
@@yidneth, when you get a chance to come to Latvia for Līgo, try one of the places where they still do it more or less authentically - Zosēni, for example (literally that place name means Ducklings :)) with many bonfires, traditional costumes, folk songs, burning a big cartweel with hay and rolling it off the hill, midnight swimming in a lake, etc. That's something that stays with you forever and I wish you could experience it one day. Best of luck!
@@Frensisa thank you very much for the recommendation. I have a Latvian friend I want to visit and it's in the bucket list for a long while. I almost got there this year but sadly I could not afford it. Still, one day. I'm in love of all old traditions being respectful and grateful to Mother Nature, and your heritage is beautiful. I did my approach with utter respect for it and I hope it shows. Best!
Don't worry if you didn't get some of the wording right (from my ear you got it right.) What is important about Latvian folk music is that it comes from the depths of the heart. That's something the vocal cords cannot master. You did absolutely Great! Dare I say even better then some Native Latvians Sing it. It was so beautifully traditionally. Brought tears to this Latvians eyes. Thank you! And the Nature scenery went PREFECT with the song! Latvians were the very last Nature Worshiping Pagans of Europe. Nature still to this day plays a VERY heart string in us.
Thank you, that really sweet, especially if you think it honours the tradition of your country. I made this with absolute respect for the name day of a Latvian friend who is always tempting me to visit for Midsummer celebrations, she's so sweet, and I sense the love for Nature in it. It's something beautiful, you have such a beautiful heritage. I know my pronunciation may not be perfect, I am Spanish in fact but I tried by best also to scout landscapes I thought were similar or close in spirit. I will be wearing a garland and going to a creek for the day :) I've learned other two songs in Latvian since but I've not had time to record them yet :) Thanks for leaving such beautiful message, it really made my day.
Wonderful and beautiful. You said you do not speak Latvian. I am Latvian and fluent in the language and this video and your rendition of it so remarkable. You have a talent for language. Latvian is a difficult one to learn . I thank you, and your friend for taking our folklore to the world. So well done. Paldies :-)
If you know of old Latvian songs, better if public domain I'm open for recommendations. There is one at least I know I'll give a try. Yes, I am not Latvian Speaker but I tried my best to be clear, of course with respect and being aware that as not native it might not be perfect, but I thought Ligo is such a perfect way to worship the goods that the "light" brings in Nature. Getting close now. Guess I'll wear a garland and go dip my feet by a creek.
Awww thanks for making the effort to leave a comment here :) I appreciate it :). The Heritage of every country (even if Latvia is not my own) is beautiful, their legends, their traditions... the beauty of worshipping our mother Nature... it's different and it's the same, it's something that makes each one unique and also "join" us. Such a quandary :)
An user up above has posted the translation into English I'll pin them here for you By the way, blessed Ligo is summer solstice, so just right today.Blessed Līgo/Summer Solstice.

Thank you so much! I agree. I'm from Spain but I love traditional songs from many countries and I try to make some covers of traditionals mingled with my own originals. Greetings back from this side of the big pond.

As a Latvian-American. I do not say this litely Priscilla sings this very ancient and Traditional Song for Holy Mid Summer. So movingly and so sacredly it brings tears to this Latvian's eyes. Your not going to find a more beautiful redition of the song here on RUclips. Ligo is the Latvian Mid Summer (June 21st) Hoildays which is a 3 day National Hoilday in Latvia to this day. It hark en's back directly to our Pagan Earth Worshiping Days. Though Latvia is largely Christian today due to Christian occupation beginning in 13th Century. All Latvians are strongly pround and passionate about our Pagan Roots. An still celebrate the Old Faith Traditions. English Translation of the Song: Līgo līgo, līgo, lī līgo, līgo, līgo līgo, līgo, lī līgo, līgo, līgo Goddess of darkness, goddess of fog līgo, līgo, Was being purified on the other side of the lake līgo. Reeds are thundering, flowers with long stalks whispering līgo, līgo, Their voices tempt me into the shrubs and reeds by the lake līgo. līgo, līgo, lī līgo, līgo, līgo Lightly I walked over the water of the lake līgo, līgo, Like a light-winged bird līgo. I knew a golden reed līgo, līgo, To be on their side of the lake līgo. līgo, līgo, lī līgo, līgo, līgo līgo, līgo, lī līgo, līgo, līgo I shakily reached my destination and found līgo, līgo, Finding my broken golden reed līgo. With dozens of young girls wreaths līgo, līgo, The lakeside was scattered (with them) līgo. līgo, līgo, lī līgo, līgo, līgo līgo, līgo, lī līgo, līgo, līgo Goddess of darkness, goddess of fog līgo, līgo, Raise your woolen cape, līgo. So that dear Māra1līgo, līgo, Knows how to heal my reed līgo. līgo, līgo, lī līgo, līgo, līgo Līgo 1. Māra is the most important goddess in latvian folklore. She is Mother Earth!
This comment just made my day. I am from Spain and this was a gift for a good friend from Latvia on her name day. I often wear garlands and bathe in ponds especially in midsummer so we used to joke I celebrated my līgo here. Thanks for the most accurate tranlation. I will share it with your permission to an user asking for the words. Thank you so much. There is a new Latvian song coming up soon, was more difficult for me as non native to pronounce but I will hope it is ok. They are done with respect. We are all children of Mother Earth you know, and in many ways she heals me. Thank you.
Vort, I would slightly disagree with your assessment that Māra is the most important goddess. Laima is equally important. Both were prayed to, or invoked, equally. Whereas Māra's domain is, as you said, the earth, she is also invoked when asking for health, successful child-bearing and wellness of people. Laima is the goddess of fate, she was invoked to ask for a blessed and happy life and later, for example, when older, a happy marriage with a compassionate, loving and hard-working husband or wife. Priscilla, your rendition is beautiful! Very beautiful videography. Thank you.
@@amberhawke And thanks for the additional information, I celebrated it on solstice day and again yesterday, I made a crown with flowers and sang dipping my feet in the creek. Thanks for the kind words. I am doing a new Latvian song "Jura gaju Naudas gūt" About people lost at sea. I find it a bit more difficult to pronounce as melody flows and I try my best as non Latvian speaker. With utter respect for traditions
Thank you so much. There is another Latvian traditional in the channel, besides my own original music (that is also on sptfy as Priscilla Hernandez) thanks for the encouragement.
Thank you so much. I really love traditionals from around the world, This is one out of two Latvian songs in the channel and I hope to do more. I will check the one you recommend. Besides traditional music I also make my own music and it's also very inspired by Nature, so this tradition resonates with me a lot. It's beautiful heritage that trascends country borders. I'm Spanish btw, this as made in honour to a Latvian friend, tried my best
This was just perfect! You really did capture the feeling and sentiment of this old tradition, and I really hope that you will have the chance to participate one day, so you can experience it first hand, as this is very beautiful and special time here in Latvia. Your beautiful voice really brings out the best in this song, and the scenery also fits perfectly. Can't wait to hear more Latvian folk songs from you!
I hope so! I'm preparing another one in Latvian that should be shared during the Summer, about people lost at sea. I am not Latvian native speaker and I'm aware my pronounciation can be a bit off here and there but it's done with the heart in its place
Thank you very much! I have many songs that are kind of seasonal in the channel, or that I have picked because of being meaningful to mark a point in the Wheel of the Year :) this one was done to honour a Latvian friend, :) but also it's our mark in the channel for Midsummer :)
@@yidneth Spain too is a beautiful country with beautiful people and vivid, impressive cultural traditions. It has its distinctive soul, which my old country has lost. That said, do you have Latvian ancestry in your family?
@@sorellman I was born in the Canary Islands, my family have german and dutch connections but further than that who could know, honestly I don't know. I am very blonde with ver sensitive eyes bit also aborigins in my islands (who lived in the stone age still in 1492) were also fair. I think world nowadays is so global that even if you can be proud of your heritage we pretty much have mixed up to a point where we are just earthlings. I love folklore though, and fairytales and mythology and Latvia has such a rich mythology and very linked to Nature and the Dainas (songs). I also play some kokle (has different names in other countries). This song in particular was recorded to surprise a dear Latvian friend , and there is another Latvian trad. in the making
@@yidneth We have been here many times before, under different forms, male or female, and we lived in different parts of the planet. This is why at times we feel at home looking at places we seem to have no apparent connection to. This cycle of returns will continue until it is no longer necessary. One other thing, mythology was their way of telling a true story about things they could not fully comprehend. Looking forward to watching your next video.
Beautiful ..to feel free with nature ...and animals ...a feeling I wish would always be a part of life ...I was at peace .. listening to this ... unique talent ...💞
This captures the vibrancy of summer, and you really went all in on visuals of flora and fauna, and the daffodils give a slight nod back to springtime, now fading from view. Ooh, seeing that tall grass just *_really_* stresses just me out though; I can feel the ticks! :O I've become *_very_* good as screening them over the years. lol Overall though, your rendition of the song is lovely. teehee Thank you and love you!
The song starts in Spring with green grass and finishes in Summer with golden wheat. I always celebrated my own way weaving garlands and bathing so this tradition resonates close. Plus latvian songs mention many mother goddesses of nature and I love that. In this song Tumsas matte miglas matte (mother fog, mother darkness) and Mara (bringer of the harvest)
@@yidneth It is so lovely to watch wheat progress through life; the little grains expand with green life, only to yellow and fade from view during the hottest time of year summer. Even if they can never see their own children rise again from the soil, fruits of labor cannot be denied. It is refreshing to hear acknowledgement of fog and darkness; too often focus is placed on summer sun, but its only one aspect of nature;. Morning mist is the only thing that sustains some flora through the dry season where I live. So its an important part of the wilderness, even if most people don't find it 'picturesque'. We should aim for balance. Hopefully the air was clear enough of smoke for you to truly enrich yourself on the solstice (since I know fire is still in your area) in tradition. Even if its not the solstice, there will always be other summer nights to make your own magic.

It's a celebration of Summer, Light Ligo is usually the MidSummer celebration in Latvia, and maidens wear floral garlands and bathe in creeks. I hope to visit the country one day.
Most of this video is at walking distance and I go often because I feed a little haven for mice and birds (long story but it is a missiom). Blessed solstice.

Best!
Hello
You look beautiful
Beautiful rendition of a beautiful song!
Thanks for the kind words
Came over from steemit. Beautiful. Thank you for keeping the gods alive. Glory and light on your house young lady.
Your rendition of this kind of music is so melodic and ethereal. I will be listening to more of your material. Thank you.
I'm from India 🇮🇳 ...i cant understand this song but the music is too good that iam listening this repeatedly.
An user up above has posted the translation into English I'll pin them here for you
By the way, blessed Ligo is summer solstice, so just right today.Blessed Līgo/Summer Solstice.
This is a very beautiful song, and it was sung so elegantly! 🥲
The nature is absolutely breathtaking! This video shows that there is beauty to be found in this world!🌲🌸🦢
Greetings from the Pacific Northwest region of the USA!
Thank you so much! I agree. I'm from Spain but I love traditional songs from many countries and I try to make some covers of traditionals mingled with my own originals. Greetings back from this side of the big pond.
Catched my heart with this song. Greetings from Germany
Greetings back from Spain, and now that we head into winter, let's catch the sun's warmth in our hearts until Spring. This and the other traditional ones are not on spotify but will be updated there soon and really grateful if you folow my original music there. open.spotify.com/artist/4VYQXDVxNNr4kGMv6cR8W1
English Translation of the Song:
Līgo
līgo, līgo, lī
līgo, līgo, līgo
līgo, līgo, lī
līgo, līgo, līgo
Goddess of darkness, goddess of fog līgo, līgo,
Was being purified on the other side of the lake līgo.
Reeds are thundering, flowers with long stalks whispering līgo, līgo,
Their voices tempt me into the shrubs and reeds by the lake līgo.
līgo, līgo, lī
līgo, līgo, līgo
Lightly I walked over the water of the lake līgo, līgo,
Like a light-winged bird līgo.
I knew a golden reed līgo, līgo,
To be on their side of the lake līgo.
līgo, līgo, lī
līgo, līgo, līgo
līgo, līgo, lī
līgo, līgo, līgo
I shakily reached my destination and found līgo, līgo,
Finding my broken golden reed līgo.
With dozens of young girls wreaths līgo, līgo,
The lakeside was scattered (with them) līgo.
līgo, līgo, lī
līgo, līgo, līgo
līgo, līgo, lī
līgo, līgo, līgo
Goddess of darkness, goddess of fog līgo, līgo,
Raise your woolen cape, līgo.
So that dear Māra1līgo, līgo,
Knows how to heal my reed līgo.
līgo, līgo, lī
līgo, līgo, līgo
Līgo
1.
Thank you.
And it's this time of the year again, Blessed Blessed Līgo/Summer Solstice.
Skaisti. Paldies Tev. Ligo!
Love this !
Thank you so much. There is another Latvian traditional in the channel, besides my own original music (that is also on sptfy as Priscilla Hernandez) thanks for the encouragement.
Love from India for this beautiful and mesmerizing song. Dveseles Dziesma is also one of my favourite Latvian songs.
WHAT A BEAUTIFUL VOICE,VERY ANGELIC.
Thank you so much for the lovely compliment, glad you enjoyed it
This was just perfect!
Except my friend request
Absolutely beautiful! I'm amazed, thank you!
Thank you very much! I have many songs that are kind of seasonal in the channel, or that I have picked because of being meaningful to mark a point in the Wheel of the Year :) this one was done to honour a Latvian friend, :) but also it's our mark in the channel for Midsummer :)
I absolutely love this! Your music has and always help me through my writer’s block.
Awww I'm really glad it inspires you :)
Beautiful sound and music and image. Beauty for the soul.
Thank you for the compliment. This is a Daina, a Baltic Folk song . I am from Spain but love song with folklore
So... Beautiful!!!❤❤❤
Thank you Līgo and Jāni is 23 and 24 so now precisely
Hola wapisima,

Thank you so much for stopping by and sending love back. Your man of the moon says hi
From indonesia ,, love this song
How exotic to have visitors from distant lands :) I have some friends living over there it looks so beautiful and honoured you like the song
@@yidneth great
This captures the vibrancy of summer, and you really went all in on visuals of flora and fauna, and the daffodils give a slight nod back to springtime, now fading from view.
Ooh, seeing that tall grass just *_really_* stresses just me out though; I can feel the ticks! :O I've become *_very_* good as screening them over the years. lol
Overall though, your rendition of the song is lovely. teehee Thank you and love you!
@@yidneth
It is so lovely to watch wheat progress through life; the little grains expand with green life, only to yellow and fade from view during the hottest time of year summer.
Beautiful song and performance! Great video.
Thank you it was Līgo precisely couple of days ago 🌿🌱
Maravillosa canción e increíble trabajo de edición. Kisses from St. Andreu
Magical, enchanting, just wonderful! 😍💖🌺
Thank you so much, I am really honoured you enjoyed it :)
as always Priscilla... Beautifully performed, magically orchestrated, and the imagery swiftly takes you away to a lovely dreamy place where one can float away on a bed of clouds! 😊

This is perfect. Love it.
Thank you very much, we enter this time of the year again 🦋
Beautiful and joyful
It's a celebration of Summer, Light Ligo is usually the MidSummer celebration in Latvia, and maidens wear floral garlands and bathe in creeks. I hope to visit the country one day.
Absolutely lovely. This is the quality content I live for
That is very sweet, I try my best, if encouraged I'll do more!
I'm always amazed by the great natural areas near you.
Most of this video is at walking distance and I go often because I feed a little haven for mice and birds (long story but it is a missiom). Blessed solstice.
Stunning!
Thank you ❤
Beautiful!
Thank you! another Latvian song will come soon to the channel.
Incredible video production and song Pris! ❤ 🎼

You always wonderful 💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚🌌
