  • The Secular Humanist Society of New York featured Dr. Richard Carrier as their guest speaker for their National Day of Reason observance. The event was held on May 7th, 2023 at Stout NYC. Richard Carrier presented a his latest work, “How Would We Know Jesus Even Existed?”. His discussion examined how the lack of evidence disproves the legitimacy of the physical existence of Jesus. He compares the lack of evidence to many other historical figures of the time and looks at the evidence available to prove that those people existed. He explains why the historical Jesus might be a mythical figure rather than a real person.
Richard Carrier is a published historian and philosopher, specializing in the philosophy of naturalism and the intellectual history of Greece and Rome. He's a veteran of the U.S. Coast Guard with a B.A. from U.C. Berkeley in History and Classical Civilizations, and a Ph.D. in ancient history from Columbia University. He has written extensively for the Secular Web and in various periodicals and books, and discussed his views in public all over the country and on TV.
His most recent books include “Jesus from Outer Space: What the Earliest Christians Really Believed about Christ”, “On the Historicity of Jesus: Why We Might Have Reason for Doubt”, and “Proving History: Bayes's Theorem and the Quest for the Historical Jesus”.
