Richard Carrier SHSny 7May23
The Secular Humanist Society of New York featured Dr. Richard Carrier as their guest speaker for their National Day of Reason observance. The event was held on May 7th, 2023 at Stout NYC. Richard Carrier presented a his latest work, “How Would We Know Jesus Even Existed?”. His discussion examined how the lack of evidence disproves the legitimacy of the physical existence of Jesus. He compares the lack of evidence to many other historical figures of the time and looks at the evidence available to prove that those people existed. He explains why the historical Jesus might be a mythical figure rather than a real person.

TCH Episode 10: Why is June Wedding Month?
The problem with atheism is it has no foundation for ethics or morality. Honest atheists admit there is no such thing as an objective morality for their worldview. You guys even admit that in the video when you ask the others there how they define it. So it's all personal preferences.
I remember when Christopher Hitchens was asked if he was atheist. Of course we all know what the dictionary definition of an atheist is, but Hitchens said he would not identify as an atheist because he cannot prove there is no deity. BUT, he did identify himself as a non-theist. Don't know if he would identify as a 'secular humanist' or not.
As much as I understand it, secular humanism is rather vague. Seeking to do good thing but never stated what is "good." Which is in itself alright but what of it? If doing good is being charitable and kind then I could very well be religious and do that and not see the need to call myself a "secular humanist." Niether do you need to be a secular humanist in order to acknowledge/understand science. At this point I stand unconvinced.
The values of humanism are misguided values. If we do not feed the soul it turns into lack of purpose and growth. Depression is a weak soul, a strong soul is connected to the spirit. A strong spirit is connected to God in mentality and deeds. We can become more and do more with Gods intervention. But this is not naturally easy to digest. What i am saying is God isnt a genie, it takes focus, hard work and determination to make one succeed. Spiritually and mentally, and also personally and in relationships. God would tell you that Himself. God works hard and promotes hard work ethics and independence, just as He works hard and is totally independent. The bible says God's word never returns back void. Which means no matter what we say or do, we cannot effect Gods plans. That is a good thing in most cases. Its bad if a person wants to try and fool God, or manipulate His direction and choices.
excellent! thx!
I do not support your saying you are a hippy liberal but I support your statements in this vid

The grand illusion
As an agnostic who trends toward atheism I like the concept of your video. From a critical point of view I would point out what Gene Roddenberry's successor Rick Berman has said the Trek that has come out since 2006 is Marvel. A polite but pointed way of saying it's not Star Trek.
What distinguishes secular humanism from religion? Is it not a religion, too?
This didn't explain anything
so much pride, they wont admit their Satanists
You realise that Satan is the creation of Christianity right? Secular means it has nothing to do with religion, We don't believe in God, therefore we don't believe in Satan either. Why do you think secular humanism has anything to do with Satan?
You’re hilarious! Satan doesn’t exist…😂
@@christopherhamilton3621 first greatest lie ever told is, Satan and God doesn't exist
@ReIentIess96 Satanism is a religious experience But a way that isn't the same as Jesus I'm sure you are familiar with Anton Levay And I can tell you that in the KJV An Antichrist Spirit is one who denies Jesus When one says I don't believe God or Satan exists When Scripture says both exists This is an Antichrist Spirit

*I've recently been researching the subject-matter of Covert Narcissism and Malignant Narcissism, and while most of the time it's from the perspective of dysfunctional relationships between people, much of the subject-matter directly correlates with religion, especially the Abrahamic faiths. Basically..., the Abrahamic god and its religious leaders through history are perfect examples of Covert and Malignant Narcissism. I also notice that there is a growing community of people, most of which are either in or recovering from abusive personal relationships, as well as many very good and well credentialed mental health professionals, that discuss and inform others about narcissistic abuse, and there is a large community that discusses and analyses theology and atheism, but not much connecting the two. I personally feel that it is blatantly obvious that there is a major overlap, and that there is not much difference between a god or a lover threatening to torture you if you don't love and trust them entirely and allow them to control you completely, mind and body...*
More of me has never been the answer for myself or others. "God is not around"? He's very much "around" in all those we drive past every day, all of those in hospitals and nursing homes, and all those we don't give our time. This is where God lives. To those in such occupation, I would always advise against calling a secular humanist for help. Unless you are prepared to help yourself.
That made absolutely no sense. Care to translate it into English?
Why all this misery and pain. If he is around and in control . Why ? I can't bear to see a stranger suffer much less someone I was willing to suffer extreme torture hanging on a cross for hours . ? Children are getting spinal taps as I type this . They are screaming in pain but God is around ? What in the name of what u talking about Willis is going on here ?
@@patrickjames1159 I understand, Patrick. Our suffering goes with us when we leave this place. It is turned into joy. It’s a bit like having an abscessed tooth pulled. We won’t wish for it back but will remember it’s pain. We’ll see how pain affected us and others. We’ll see how the pain changed us and what we learned from it. We will see it clearly in a place where there is no more pain and suffering. Hope that answered your question. Grace and peace. 😁
Neither an answer nor explanation there, Mike… 😢
So does the 24th century celebrate the old traditions of Thanksgiving and Christmas, but without any religious connotations to it?
Yes
Is Thanksgiving religous?
Really !!!!!

11:45 "Paul, the guy that actually really built Christianity. We don't know what the hell Jesus did or said. What we do know is Paul" --- very bizarre/false statement, since Paul only wrote about Jesus, even "imitate me as I imitate Christ". Also by implication dismisses the historical writings of Luke. (its like saying, we have a trusted autobiography of a particular guy - "X", written by guy Z, but we don't know what guy X did or said). Paul was instrumental in taking the message to the gentiles - those that had no knowledge of the Jewish traditions and Old Testament, and their God. But his 'school' was based on Jesus's discipleship model. Jesus was renewing the Jewish mind, whilst Paul took that to an 'un-Jewish' mind, to think differently ("renewing of the mind") Paul says that the foundation of the church is Jesus Christ. Here's a good vid on the topic - 'Why and how Paul invented "Christian Theology"' ruclips.net/video/Y4CY73psVFQ/видео.html 13:44 - I read that (only) one (later) manuscript translated Socrates to Paul (...not Jesus)

This video disappoints, it did very little to help me understand Secular Humanism.
How?, it makes total sense, its the philosophy to do good things, and to believe in scienctific thinking not faith. No god. No heaven, No Hell. No good No evil. just life and do good things
What are “good things”?

Thank you.
I just found this video by accident. I missed the memorial since somehow no one told me about it. Glad to have heard and seen it here.
is secular humanism always associated with the political Left?
Usually yes. Humanists believe in freedom, happiness, and well being of everyone, not just a select few Christian's.
