I am watching this while watching the movie on the topic. Then reading up on it. It looks to me like an extraction - because this German was so insistent that the guards let his car through without proper checks. Then, this was the method of getting him out of Crete to be transferred to Allied control. And he went from a concentration camp in Canada to a special one in Wales. So, to me, it looks like this was an extraction in which this man was removed from Crete and delivered from the German occupation forces. Meaning, it seemed that's what he wanted. Now, of course, this may not have been a set up. Perhaps just a coincidence that he was so insistent that his German guards let his car through road blocks.
