- A playthrough of Tradewest's license-based 1991 racing game for the NES, Ironman Ivan Stewart's Super Off-Road.
This video shows a full single-player run through all ninety-nine races.
Ironman Ivan Stewart's Super Off-Road is a Rare-produced conversion of Leland's popular 1989 arcade game. How many of you guys remember those wide cabinets with the three steering wheels mounted across the front?
It's a top-down racing game in which three racers zoom around single-screen tracks in their upgradeable 4x4 trucks. It feels a lot like Super Sprint, R.C. Pro-Am, and Micro Machines in that it's simple, fast paced, and a whole lot of fun.
The NES version, produced by Rare, does an excellent job of reproducing the frantic appeal of the original. The graphics and sound obviously had to be trimmed back for the 8-bit hardware, but the controls are spot-on and all of the races from the arcade game are here. Even better, the NES version bumps the max player count from three to four provided you have a multitap and enough controllers.
Unexpected though it may be, the NES version is right about on par with the SNES version ( • Super Off Road (SNES) ... ), and it makes for one of the best multi-player arcade-like experiences you'll find on the NES.
The word "classic" tends to get thrown around a lot, but Off-Road is one of those rare games that completely deserve the label, and Rare did the original justice with this stellar NES cart.

NintendoComplete (www.nintendocom...) punches you in the face with in-depth reviews, screenshot archives, and music from classic 8-bit NES games!
Primo racing game, and doubly so with a multitap!
Good thing I kept like four CRT TV's lying around.
When I was a kid, my dad and I would get super competitive on this game. Good memories. Totally forgot about this one.
One of my favorites. The first game that I would have to stop because it made my thumb hurt!
I know that feeling! It's like somehow you think that pushing the buttons harder will make you go faster or turn better lol
played this a lot back then
I first played this port on an emulator years ago and was amazed at how it looked, played, and sounded. The old cabinet was a staple in the local arcade hangout, so I remember it well. Amazing conversion by the team @ Rare and thank you for posting this, Alex. 👋🏼
I never realized as a kid how much Ivan Stewart's eyes made him look like he's ready to run me down with a 40-foot jump off a dirt ramp so he can then proceed to eat my soul.
Though the footage does remind me that MAN did they need to stretch that upgrade system a little more.
Wonderful memory with this good retro game that reminds me of my early childhood. I still play it from time to time thanks to an emulator. And I confess I still love it so much.
My favorite Racing Game of all time is this game on the SNES but I also love this one😍love your vids😌
i was given this game i think xmas 93 by my aunt. didnt know of it i had lots of fun a very good game by those days standards for me
The multi-player arcade hit comes home to the NES as a multi-player racer courtesy of the Four Score and Satellite.
I just played through this game two days ago. 6th place was as best as I could get at the end. I played the heck out of this game as a kid!
I first played Super Off Road at a caravan park, during a holiday, as a young kid.
Years later and now in my teens, I was on a bit of a road trip with a friend and the arcade we visited had a Super Off Road machine. I was overjoyed to revisit this classic.
Not having played it in years and never having placed higher than 3rd when I was originally playing it and also with being a generally awful gamer.....I somehow kicked my friends arse and because the winner stayed on, I played game after game on my original coin because I couldn't stop winning.
Haven't seen that friend since 2000, other than one random sighting where I believe he pretended not to know me and I choose to believe it was because of the above, haha.
Something about this OST just *felt* like David Wise, and sure enough, it was made by Rare.
And speaking of Rare, the people who were on the high score table (at 1:43:58) worked on the NES version of Super Off Road: programmers Paul J. Machacek and Mark Betteridge, graphic artists Trevor Hill and Kevin Bayliss, product manager Simon Farmer, real-life BFFs Louise Stamper and Rachel M. Edwards and company founders Tim and Chris Stamper, with the exception of composer/sound designer David Wise!
Best racing game on the NES
Sweet love all the vids thank you
Absolutely loved the arcade and this port. Need to get a new cartridge as soon as possible.
Man, I had so much fun with this on the Amiga!
They had this arcade game at the hockey rink in Soldotna AK growing up. I bet I punched $1000 in quarters into that damn thing...
I *SOOOO* need 3 friends, 2 more controllers for my Super Retro Trio, & to play this game more often. This is one of the few games the NES part of my Super Retro Trio works well enough to play, otherwise it acts stupid & the - seemingly - only working part is the Sega Genesis part!
I remember having this on NES as a kid and remember Leland oil 100% not being meant to ever win. I can still see that sentiment still hold up today lol
Funny thing even if you have infinite turbos you still can't win if you don't know how to properly drive the truck. You always make it look so easy.
Dude you get the nitrous first to win then slowly build up the engine, I think I got to round 50 and it restarts. Dam this music brought back memories thank you sir
I beat this game a couple times when I was a kid. Basically you had to save nitros on the easier tracks so you could "nitro it" though two tough ones. Also sometimes sit stationary around on the track, waiting for more nitros and money bags.
This game 😂 yes..... classic 👌
Watching after seeing a review of the Hot Wheels Elite 64 Toyota Stadium Truck. This is still a great game.
Nothing like the sound of tires squealing on dirt. But to be fair, these games were well ahead of their time.
A good port of the Arcade game. But, I played the Genesis version a lot more.
Finally I could see the end of this game.
Frustration was epic, because the game cheated so much.
You do a turbo and all cars speed up without using a turbo.
Thank you for finishing this game and showing us the end of it😅.
An awesome game and especially for an arcade port, but the rubberbanding AI got the best of me eventually every time. That grey car is a cheating bitch, driving normally faster than what I can mashing a full stack of nitros in one race.
I didn't know you could actually beat this game though, I think my best runs ended around race 60-70.
This game makes me mad. Gray car is always hard to beat yellow is slow but never drops out during tournament. Not mention getting stuck on the dam walls or making a corner to tight…..
