JAWA 2-stroke power tuning (part 5) - exhaust pipes

  • Hi folks, 2-stroke & JAWA lovers, welcome to another little garage insight. It’s about the pipes this time. A PAIR of exhaust pipes of course - as usual on a historic twin-port Jawa.
    Quite a bit work to make them fit the bike. Technically it’s a bit of a compromise as the length - in case of straight pipes - is limited for obvious reasons.
    Special thanks to Sir N. Stiller / lasernst for his support on the sheet metal design.
    In case you like to see more:
    Here is the making-of the JAWA 559R engine:
    • JAWA 2-stroke power tu...
    Cylinder & piston:
    • JAWA 2-stroke power tu...
    Special clutch:
    • JAWA 2-stroke power tu...
    Thanks for watching.

    When I was a teen I used the spare time teens have wisely. I used to buy crate bikes that nobody knew about or had long forgotten. Jawa, CZ, Penton, Bultaco, Montesa, Ossa - and make them absolute museum pieces. New or better than new. Then make a fitted cover and my mom would embroider the logo and sew, my dad would waterproof them. Buyers came from far away and NEVER haggled on price. These machines are works of art and should be treated like precious treasures and rode into the ground like ya stole it. When you ride one and it gets the wind in your face and you and the bike become one and you find your pace, that happy place where the two of you just tick: replace THAT! When you look deep into it's paint work so rich and deep and flawless...see the sun blinding you off the chrome...You jump back on it to ride it LOTS more! It's a love affair, man. I could NEVER be happy with factory new being "good enough".

    As a fabricator and welder of 30+ years I can truly appreciate the skill and craftsmanship in making these. Excellent job, I bow down to you. Beautiful pipes.
    In a future project I suggest tack welding your entire pipe together then filling it with a constantly replenished supply of argon (back flushing). It will give a cleaner weld on the inside and a stronger weld for resistance to metal fatigue.

    I've watched every video of your jawa tuning, this work is absolutely brilliant and well done , in each detail. I'm a two stroke lover since childhood and i completely agree with what you have done. Decreasing crank weight, converting the piston port to reed valve... everything made respecting the original look of the Jawa. Very pleasant to watch till the end, i hope you make more videos for a good listening to this singer! It runs like later ari-cooled cross with many rpm and a lot of torque at low. As i expected you had issues with gearbox and clutch system, but you solved brilliantly. I've recently got a spare cylinder for my californian 250 and i was thinking to work on the cylinder, not something so radical but definetly they have good potential. Still thank you for sharing these brilliant work, have a nice road :)

    About 12 years ago, I designed & built the entire exhaust system for my 1988 Jawa 500-826 500R Mk.II. I ran the numbers and deliberately made one of the headers 8cm. longer than the other, which causes the Rotax 504 engine to ease into "coming on the cam" at 6,000 RPM, fully light up between 7,000 to 9,000 RPM and rev out at 10,000 RPM.
    The silencer is a cut shorter 638 silencer (for the megaphone effect) with the innards of a Micron race can with added adjustable backpressure tubes (because 4 stroke singles hate straight through pipes / need backpressure).
    Top speed was up from the strangled stock 95 MPH to just over an indicated 115 MPH.

    On his last days he was watching these video's. Begging for time to begin tuning his personal CZ250 Sport.
    Now that'll be up to me. However, no parts are available, only to be crafted. So that'll be a long journey.
    However, I also was thinking to transform it into electric powerhouse, which is more my thing and is readily available.

    Super impressed with your work, well done. You've managed to make a 2 wheeled, 2 stroke, Czech snow plough, into a very frisky lil sleeper . But can you get it to still pop and idle all on its own long enough to don the skid lid and gloves, or wait at a T long enough for traffic to pass without bleeping the throttle?
    I mean no disrespect, you engineering skills and knowledge are well above my own. I just ask because I imagine that the weight and enertia of that over engineered crank in the original engine went a long way toward producing the famous low down 'tractor torque', and endlessly reliable slow idle that made them so popular....I do understand that in pursuit of power, it is simply impossible to both have and eat cake.....but just curious about the idling aspect now you've shifted so far away from the agricultural intent of the original bulletproof Czech design. Thanks for sharing your great work, I have a box full of complete first iteration 350 Californian and other bits including czech made electronic ignition...you've inspired me to get back on the spanners and get her terrorizing the neighborhood and turning the air blue with 2 stroke smoke and fist shaking abuse like she's meant to...😀

      Not sure what your question is, but yes, the farmers engine seems to cope with power in general after improving clutch, primary drive, gearbox (to be continued) and so on and so on. The drive system would need a little more damping like on modern engines. That would help…

      Too many secrets just make the world a worse place: Ex 178 deg, Transf 125. Nothing extreme but way way higher than stock.

      The way I see it no matter what you ride, if you love two stroke tuning we all have the same love.
      Many Scooterists also own motorcycles too, by the way

    I'm curious about power gain..is it gave you the expected performance? More top end power or bottom to mid?

    Amazing work. I can’t imagine the disappointment when you realize the power band is not as hoped for. So painful to do trial and error when you need to do two pipes!
    Btw, how do you stop that thing?!Brakes on these barely stopped the bike with stock power 😂

    • @Quiet.Light.Engineering
      @Quiet.Light.Engineering  Год назад

      It came out more as a surprise, as I made a pair of very similar pipes before. Still not sure what makes the difference. The brakes are fine, the bike hardly never goes much faster as it was made for on country roads.

      @@Quiet.Light.Engineering try to alter the amount of back pressure downstream of the resonance chamber. Notice that modern 2 stroke pipe have a pretty long and narrow pipe downstream of the chamber leading to a muffler. The dynamic supercharging effect of the chamber greatly depends on pressure inside. Maybe this pressure doesn’t build up till higher in the revs with higher flow. Back pressure is easy to try to change and experiment with

    Amazing work and awesome welding! Can I ask what settings you were using on your welder to prevent burning through such thin metal?

    • @Quiet.Light.Engineering
      @Quiet.Light.Engineering  Год назад

      For initial spots I used below 10 A. For weld I used settings between 25 & 35 A. I was told professionals use higher power but well much faster, which reduces heat affected zone and results in better weld. I’m hobby welder!

    Absolut liebevolle Arbeit bis ins Detail, Hut ab!
    Mich würde kurz interessieren, für welchen Drehzahlbereich (ca.) der Auspuff für die 353-er gedacht ist? Bei den normalen (ungetunten) 352, 353, 354, 360, ... Motoren ist ja eine schwere Kurbelwelle drin, die keine hohen Drehzahlen (über 6000U/min) mag und verkraftet. Gruß

      @Quiet.Light.Engineering  Год назад

      Danke. Der Motor dreht mit kleiner Kurbelwelle (siehe anderes Video) munter bis 6500. Immerhin 1500 über Standard und völlig ausreichend. Die Größe und das Gewicht der Kurbelwelle sind nicht unbedingt ausschlaggebend für das erreichbare Drehzahlniveau. Der umgebaute Motor würde mit der originalen Treckerkurbelwelle genauso hoch drehen, aber länger brauchen dorthin. Die Haltbarkeit wäre ggf. auch reduziert.
