It is indeed a lovely miniature to take out of the film. And shows the core and heart of the story. The elderly actor is of course Arthur Wontner, who was well known for playing Sherlock Holmes in the cinema, often alongside Ian Fleming (not that one!, though it wasn't unknown for them to get each others mail) as Watson. May I humbly recommend if you haven't already seen it, Brandy for the Parson (1952), also with Wonter in a cameo role.
Beautiful nostalgic movie with endearing characters telling a tale of an england that doesn’t exist anymore! The harmonica music is charming and the quality of the film is excellent! A drunk Kim Kendall playing the trumpet is my favourite part of the movie! You want to feel nostalgic that’s the movie to watch!❤️
One thing that does exist is the pub in the background when Gregson breaks down and they have the coffee incident. It's the Old Green Manne near Rickmansworth. From the outside it is still the same. Not sure they should have been going that way to Brighton though.

In the distant past before VCR and cable and internet, it was common to catch part of a movie, so watched some of it but never appreciated the details. Its a good movie. not full bore American action style, but lad back quiet weekend British style.
Oh how I love this film ... I would like to tell you how I came across it. It was a Sunday morning in the early/mid 1970s, my mum was looking at the tv listings in the Sunday paper. She raised her voice and said "Oh look, Genevieve in on B.B.C. 1 this afternoon, I said what's that Mum ? She explained the plot of the film and said "your Dad took me to see this, when we were courting, go and tell him" Funny thing was, he was outside our house underneath the car, trying to fix it "how apt"!. After our Sunday roast we sat down to watch it, as it started I will always remember my mum (Jeanette) saying to my Dad (John) "do you remember this John, he said of course I do Love" that is eched in my memory. Great funny touching film and great dynamics in it. So it holds significant childhood memories and loving memories of my Mum gone in 1990 and Dad in 2007.
Without a doubt, one of the best comedies this country has ever produced. It has the perfect balance of laugh out loud humour and endearment. And the use of Technicolor in this film is very clever! Thank you very much and Merry Christmas! 🎄😊

I had the pleasure of writing a film script, when I worked in London as an American actor/ screenwriter, that picks up the film 50 years on, where Kay's granddaughter, a model, goes on the rally one last time.. Kay was not only a gifted actress, but also a lovely human being..

I suspect it was 39-40 years ago when I first stumbled on it - likely a late Saturday night as this was. I guess I was in the mood for such a comedy - and I was rolling from one mishap to the next. It was a gem of an experience for me - and I've longed to see the movie again these many decades. Of course, I wasn't rolling on this viewing; yet, it had been so long that it was like watching it for the first time. And I've come away delighted to have experienced it again. Thank you!
Interesting. I saw it as a child in the 80s, and was struck by it. In particular, I found the arguments between the couple as quite revealing of trouble in relationships/marriage
I have always loved this movie.... it reminds me of the Airfix kit I had of the Darracq back in the 60's when I was a keen model maker. Being able to watch at leisure and rewind at intervals brought my attention to the shadow of the sound boom in one of the scenes (19:25) just coming into view on the grass verge in the background. However it doesn't stop my affection for the film.... It is all part of the charm. BBC 4 Extra has recently aired the radio play of "Genevieve" which had me searching for the film once again. One of the greatest - and funniest - movies ever made! Many comedies are 'passed off' - quite rightly - as 'gentle' - that - at least for me, is the 'death-knell'; however, in this case, it's most definetely not. An absolute classic, that I'm happy to watch - and laugh out loud - again, and again! One of the few others that fit this, is 'It Happened One Night'. :o)
First saw this on Good Friday 1979 when it was on ITV. I was 14 years old at the time. Couldn't stop laughing at the car faults. Right at the end when the spring sound came i was rolling around on the floor laughing my head off, didn't think i was ever going to stop. The springing sound still makes me laugh, even now forty five years later.
Whats unbeleiveable is here in the UK they still do the london to brighton run....... in the same cars, 120 year old cars and they look as pristine still as they are in this movie...... Machines will last forever if they are cared for its unreal

When i was a kid my Dad had a cine projector and would play films at our local youth centre. This film was my favourite and where i got my love of vintage/veteran cars. ❤

Absolute bliss from the days when England was English. They spoke English, too. Dinah Sheridan was utterly gorgeous, although Wendy seems to have a very short fuse. Alan is pretty wet. Anyway, loved it. Oh the joy of it. My usual tear when they're talking to the old gentleman. So much of what we were, is gone.
Shows the change in attitude to drinking and driving. Ambrose is half way through a pint of beer, and says they'll have a couple more before they set off.
I must say I'm glad this idea of Hot water only provided at Certain hours has become a thing of The past. Although I did see a guest house In a channel 4 Program in Scotland that had appauling ideas of Presentation.
We had a 1912 Maxwell Messenger at the time, and this was fun at the time. Today I recommend “Kuss Me, Kate” with Ann Miller, Howard keel, Kathryn Grayson and BOB FOSSE.
Lots pre and post war London Transport RT buses in this film, if this film had been made a year earlier, then there would have been trams on those tram tracks, 10 years later and the London Trolleybuses were withdrawn. As for the actors, never worked out whether it was Moore or Gregson were the star, or both, as Moore continued to upstage Gregson, as for the ladies, enjoyed their staring rolls.

Made ostensibly to promote the London - Brighton ancient car rally which passed close to my house near Waddon Station. Actually made as a recruitment promotion for lawyers of which there was a chronic shortage after WW2. Hence my father enthusiastically taking me to see it. Me? Be a lawyer? Got to be kidding!
There used to be a pub I used to go,just out of shot 23 minutes in.used to have strippers some nights . Back in the 90’s great nights out back then . I miss the 90’s
I first watched this great old movie in my distant youth and several times since but these days it seems to me to be more about silly and incompetent people than the wonderful old cars that ply the London to Brighton run each year, no wonder the club put a disclaimer at the start of the film!! some of the driving is just plain dangerous and not really a subject for comedy
