In 2009, I came home from a deployment and my oldest son, who was 3 or 4 at the time, wouldn’t eat for almost 2 weeks... Being a father I was obviously concerned, so I asked him about it and his answer really hit me hard… He said, “Dad, if I eat I’ll grow up and if I grow up I’ll become a daddy. And if I become a daddy, I’ll have to leave my family.” My boys barely knew who I was and I couldn’t let them grow up without a father... I realized at that moment my family needed me a lot more than the Navy needed another SEAL. So I put in for retirement the next day… Back then I knew I wanted to be with my family more than anything, so I made changes in my life that allowed me to be at home. We all want more time to spend with the people we love or doing the things we love. That’s why I’m here to help! That's why I am giving you my top 3 training videos (for FREE) to help you learn how you can stay at home, and save time and money while you improve your shooting! This is good advice, but I do want to add something to it. It helps a lot, if the optometrist knows about the problems shooters have. That way he will know what to do. Here in germany some of the optometrists that are also specialized on shooting glasses will come to the range and setup everything matchung eye distance to the front sight, lighting ect. With my optometrist, he actually told me to bring several firearm with me to his shop, so we could measure the distance on every firearm I own to get a correction setup, that will match all pistols/revolvers I have.
Chris, I did option #2, with decentered focus points, up and to the left. It wasn't quite high or left enough, and I find myself still moving around to find the best focal point. I did not get the digital free form lenses to adjust for distortion, and I think that also reduces my sight and target clarity. I'll get those adjustments but it sounds like the different contacts takes away some of that complexity. Thanks for a very clear presentation on our optics choices. I spent considerable time on the internet looking for good info and found little.
Holy crap never knew about special shooting glasses , that is the lens I'm 62 I guess front sight being a little blurry doesn't bother me so much. I'm going to check out my eye doctor appointment time👍
Thanks for the informative advice. Can you also make a video about how to select corr. lens for shooting handguns, as well as selecting corr. lens for tactical shooting in different body positions?
Awesome video! I'd say you could set the 1st bead of your front sight focus string to the distance of your front sight and bring that into the optometrist office too. 😃🇺🇸☯️🇺🇸
Good info Chris. I use different powers on my contacts, but still can’t focus easily on my front sight. With the strength of your near contact ( which I assume is set to sight distance) can you read a book. I have bent elbows when I read or use a computer. When I straighten my arms, the front sight is too far away. Thanks for your help.
Hello Chris, with all the examples you show, it seems like they’re all with only one eye open. How do you intently focus on the front sight with both eyes open and not see double? I have 20/20, but when I use your method, I don’t even know which version of the target to aim at (double vision!) Thanks Chris!
Great video! I apologize if you've covered this in another video, but wouldn't a fourth solution be a reflex sight? If you have anther video which discusses those, feel free to just point me there. Thanks for the great material on your channel!
Does this apply for using. Scope? Or should you adjust the eyepiece to get the reticle in focus instead of you far sight is 20:20 but have a close sight prescription?
I've been thinking about going the two different contact lenses route for a while now. I am retired now but at one point worked as a firearms instructor for my agency. My 20-10 left me more years ago than I care to remember! Do you need two contacts for the right eye for focus on nearer pistol sights and also for rifle sights which would be further? How about red dots...how do you figure they fit in?
How about 9mm 17 and 19 Glocks. I have tried several types of glasses including reading glasses. I would love have a special pair of those glasses. Something for me to look forward to.
Digital free form surface lenses seem like it would be good for any situation. Why do you say it only makes sense for shooting? Is it just the price or is there some drawbacks?
My dominant eye according to eye Dr is my right eye, but I hit my target more accurately closing my right eye using my left eye. I can hit my target using either or but I can never see my front sight or the target clear. All blurry. Suggestions on how to clear up my front sight?
MAYDAY I just got back from shooting my .30/06 getting read for elk. I have a +200 lens, basic reading glasses. I shot without them today and i was shooting 12-14" high. Is this because I need to be wearing my corrected lenses? This all came onto me in the last year. Still getting used to taking them everywhere I go and always remember them when I need to read something and I have forgot them! Doctor said its just aging eyes and my eyes are healthy, They just need help when reading close up. Would not having the glasses today when shooting cause me to shoot a foot high at 200 yards with a fixed 6 scope with no eye relief? I NEVER miss, I have been shooting since I was 6. My first job was for Col. Jeff Cooper at 8 years old. I have had a life surrounded by shooting greats. Its definitely not my mechanics. I am going to have a friend of mine shoot my rifle to check zero. This issue made me think and this is what got me here. I appreciate any feedback of experiences. Many blessings!
I can't see shit up close (like my pistol sights) but can see normal from far away (I'm 47) Because of that I only wear reading glasses when I need to. I trained in the range with a special glasses that have bifocals on them, but that's just for the range as I don't wear bifocals during my day to day (I would get very dizzy). So in real life, if something do happened to go wrong and I need to use my weapon I would be using it without really seeing my sights. Should I train to shoot the weapon without bifocal glasses even though I can't see my sights?
Chris. Great information as my sight picture has become blurry over the years. I am trying to go with the contact lenses option that you recommended, but I needed clarification. Are you suggesting setting my dominant eye to focus on the near sight (AKA Front Sight)and my non dominant eye to focus on distance (AKA The Target)? I will be getting a set of these to use during range days and when down range. For every day use I will be using a different set with my normal prescription contacts, but just wanted to make sure to clarify to the optometrist exactly what you meant. Thank you for your help, Retired Navy Christopher Blazer
Interesting thing is when I have a “dope” card attached to my rifle or a can’t level and need to see close up while also using a scope! Losing my 20/15 vision has been so frustrating!
Regarding corrections for shooting pistols, What distance do you adjust for with non dominate eye. Currently I have a correction for dominate eye that gives great focus on front sight. The target , behind the sights is very blurry. The image in the non dominate is decent but is off to the side. If I "aim" at the non dominate eye target I miss way wide. What distance should the non dominate eye corrected for. Is there a distance correction for non dominate that will merge the "two targets"?
I recently had cataract surgery and it did wonders for my far vision, which is now back to my young aviator eyes 20:15 (woohoo!), but my near vision needs 2.0-2.5 magnifiers. I got some reverse bifocals but that doesn't work for rifle target shooting. I shoot WW1 and WW2 rifles so an optic sight is out of the question. Can you recommend any online brands that offer those de-centered and digital-free-form glasses? Or is this something I can ask for with my local optometrist who made me some reverse bifocals a few years ago (pre-cataract surgery)?
Wolfpack 46. Did you ever get an answere to your question? I am looking into getting Cataract surgery early, I am 57 but they have started to form. I am not sure what kind of lens to have them use to correct, should I correct for distance or for close up for shooting/hunting? My distance vision is pretty good uncorrected so maybe that answers the question. I like seeing for away but when I am adjusting my scope or looking at other things up close in the field, putting on a pair of readers is a pain.
@@johns2590 hey John S. No reply so far, but I got two sets of SPS glasses and went with magnifiers reverse bifocals for the dominant eye only in one set for the pistol shooting and no correction for the iron sight rifle shooting. Rifle shooting seems to be no issue nowadays but pistol shooting is a little odd still, but focusing on the front sight helps a lot but the target is still blurry.
Well, I am Swedish and so is my optician, who did not understand what you meant with power when I told her about my shooting training... no worries, got it!
Hey Randizle! Yes, that is absolutely true! I purposefully choose not to shoot in my videos for a few reasons. One main reason is so my account does not get shut down by RUclips, and another is to demonstrate how dry fire training can help improve your shooting. I hope you still learned something from my videos even though no guns were fired. Thank you very much for this! I'm only 54 but have been struggling with my vision when I shoot.

I need to find a dedicated shooting optometrist here in Houston.
I finally relented and got glasses for computer work, reading.
Thank you for the video! I know have an option to explore vice the crap insert I use in my ESS eye pro

Thx, Chris!
Where can you get decentralize lenses made? My optometrist hasn’t heard of it.

what about shooting with weak side? i gave up on optometry and put a red dot on pistol, rifle, and shotgun.
What do you mean by “Powered Contact lenses”, in what way are they powered?
All optical prescriptions are written in “Power Plus” eg +2.5 anyone ever getting a prescription should understand this simple fact.

If you got extra money a lens surgery might allso be a solution.
