    HI Wendy,
Psuedostratified columnar ET contains a few different types of true columnar cells that touch both basal and apical surfaces...... BUT it also contains some cells that are shorter, touching only the basement membrane and not reaching the apical surface. One of those shorter cell types is known as a basal cell and serves as stem cells for replacing the other cells of this tissue. The basal cells' nuclei are close to the basement membrane while other cells' nuclei are at various levels, giving the appearance of multiple layers but without the true stacking seen in a real stratified ET.
