DSG is more fun but as bad as Nissan CVT in terms of historic reliability. People needs basic transportation just like 1 gear EV cars like ID3 with practically a CVT.
I have a b7 1.8t when i come to a stop after the car have been warmed up white smoke comes out what could be the problem?
Wow, you did an amazing job filming this inspection! Really professional even with the rotor bolt snapped... You are the proof that even the best make mistakes! Love it🍿
I got a 2007 A4 Quattro 2.0T from IAA in April for 500$. All it needed was a rear bumper cover. While MF'ers were buying toilet paper, I was buying an Audi on the cheap...
In my country you can do the same purchase for 500$ only if a "rear bumper cover" means the audi a4 2007 2.0T itself, because 500$ is a price of rear bumper here.
Here in Denmark you pay 5000 usd for that car with 300000 km😂
In 2019 I bought mine with 80k miles, B7 Quattro 2.0T A/T for 18k USD. Because my country it's a POS lol but great deal considering the MK5 GTI was selling for 35k lol
@@frederikjanning8297In Lithuania also around 5-6k euros
In estonia i bought a4 2.0 tdi quattro, 250000km for 4k
Great video! You pointed almost every common repair I've had to make on my 08 Quattro The last 3 years, high pressure fuel pump, pcv valve, purge valve, throttle body, both axles, coolant flange, and oil housing. Triptronic Trans is solid tho. Key is preventative maintenance, got 133k on mine.
Forgot to add i put in new radiator last month, plastic parts are a pain
Same I just reached 130,000 and having the serpentine belt, coolant distribution pipe and thermostat replaced with original parts
i appreciate you including the part where you forget to put the wheel bolts back on when brake torquing the engine. your tips and advice is priceless but including your mistakes makes this a laudably down-to-earth video!
also, is there an advantage to using plastic valve covers? my impression is german carmakers tend toward these and i don't understand why
Kevin Yuqi Wang cost saving, nothing else.
some newer models have plastic Oil Pan’s... fragile AF
CVT on mine. Love it. Stage 2 for 4 years, no dramas. Changed fluid 3 times. Kept servicing and didn't slam it off from a stop. Still great. Most people who say they hate the CVT haven't driven one. WAY faster, smoother, and simply a pleasure to drive. Now, they're cheap to replace and rebuild, or, as only the CVT engine will allow, a manual swap with the GVE.
What mileage? I didn't realise CVT was a cheap fix, I've looked and it seems to indicate like 5k where I am as I have one. You can swap out CVT for manual?
Did you change the CVT fluid yourself or took it to a dealer?
Bought a silver s line qm California car. Worked on at 034 Motorsport. Has their high flow cat, all the street density mounts, Unitronic stg1 tune and a eibach koni cup kit. $5300 June of 2019 with 138k on it and receipts in the glove box that total more than I paid for it. Super clean with only a small dent on the hood. Could eat out of the engine bay. Now with 143k on it a couple of scratches, evap leak, oil filter housing leak and antifreeze leak near the turbo somewhere. Never over 4k rpm and still this BS. So mad cause my go fast money now has to go into maintenance. Oh well, I still love the car. Always get asked how I kept it so clean. All credit goes to the previous owner.
I'm VW/Audi through and through but i would avoid this car in CVT spec like the Rona.
@Kris Nicholson And designed to sound horrible. Sounds like slipping clutch

I get that you are not a fan of the denso stickers, but they do make quite a lot of oem engine components for VW group.
Denso is the best imo
I love my vehicles CVT. Works great and much more efficient than gears.
I love my b7, auto 6 speed, 200k miles, runs like a top
Have you ever had timing issue?
CVT?
i didn't know audi's ever used cvt's....cool!
All automatic fwd audis are CVT - stay away from them!
@@Jackinacox not all of them are CVT... Definitely have to look at the individual model and transmission model, FWD Tiptronic Audis exist too, they're not all Multitronic.

Avoid if there is no service history and 6 plate clutch version. If its the 7 plate version with regular oil changes and the car has gasoline engine and its not remaped then its ok. I have 220000km on my gasoline CVT and the box runs like a dream
have you done a rear and front diff fluid change video for this platform?
I have the same car with the most recent theft deterrent system available... a 6 speed transmission.
My cvt in my prius is just fine at 226k. But I'm looking at a 2008 a4 Platinum for 4200.
That's because it's a light car.
The hardware for bellypan is not expensive. ECS sells them for like $1 a piece
Made it to 202k on my B7. Sold it after I got a Fa5 Si. The Si is much more fun
Auto or manual?
Sweet! Where can I get one? Includes free fault codes...
Ty for the education , really appreciate 🙏 your job ty ty ty
I have this same exact car other then mine is white. I spun a bearing on the crank and it is pretty much done. I’m gonna replace the engine but now I’m wondering what it would take to do a manual swap. The bad part is my CVT transmission has no problems so far and the car has 136,000 miles on it
I had the same issue with my front snub mount. Bits felt like mattress foam was sprinkled up in there :/
Love the clip and reference to Lord JC there 😂
That more than makes up for forgetting the wheels aren't attached!
There is a large lack of drive shafts in the rear.
In March I bought a 2001 A4 B5 for $650
So this is a Front Wheel Drive A4? Also, nothing wrong with Denso stuff.
And it is guzzeling oil and has a camshaft sensor fault??
Um....no. 0:41 CVT stands for Constantly Variable Transmission. Even Audi refers to CVT's as such.
What is the value of a broken CVT?

Another great video, love the work you guys do. I have used your videos to help me with maintainence , diagnostics and repairs to my own 2007 A4 2.0tfsi a load of times. Thank you.
One thing not mentioned in this video though, was the cam chain and tensioner.
I'm curious to know if these are something to watch out for? Ive heard some stories of the tensioners failing, but have also read that there's no change interval providing the engine is serviced properly with correct oil. Is the chain and tensioner something I should consider replacing at some point?
Car currently has just over 113k miles on it.
Any input would be really appreciated 🤙🏻
Please tell me that valueless part was a joke and not what you think. CVT - Continuously variable transmission. If the transmission has no value it's taking you nowhere fast :D Audi B BODY :DDDDD A5(b7), A6(c7), a7(c7), a8(d4). Mein god, you have no idea what you're talking about. As a mechanic you may know the general stuff, but when it comes to a certain make/model you're duller than a hammer. I suggest you stop quoiting dealer service prices, that's what the poor people do. Also from what i gather from others is that turbos rarely leak outside, usually the leaking is inside and is visible via a blueish-blue smoke. Why are you hating on Denso? From what i've seen myself is that Toyota/Lexus vehicles have denso parts(electronics to be more precise) and i've never heard of a corolla/prius needing an ecu swap if it wasn't sunk(or tuned). Seeing as you're against hacks in general i'd say you have a lot to learn and take my criticism as learning tool (yes i know it needs a pinch of salt, but eh, that's life).
more like Crap Valueless Transmission
Please do a manual swap on it, we need more DAP content! Your tutorials and DIY's are pretty good though! It would be a fun couple videos to watch you do a 6 speed on it
Too expensive and not worth doing.
@Kris Nicholson I don't think that's true. Once the hardware is installed and mechanically working, and you have the new trans wired correctly, the software side of things is fixable. I know for a fact that on the MQB platform, the ECUs have the same hardware and software part numbers, regardless of transmission. Swapping the trans is as simple as changing the correct bits in the ECU and other module's long coding, and removing that auto trans from the Gateway Installation List on the CAN gateway. This is an older car, so it may be different than the MQB platform, but I can't imagine requiring an ECU replacement for a transmission swap. Worst case, maybe flashing the ECU to a different software version with ODIS Engineering or something but again, not impossible or too costly. If it really needed a different ECU, it can still be swapped with a cheap used junkyard one and adapted with ODIS Service. DAP could do it if they wanted to...
@Kris Nicholson isn't the CVT fwd engine mounted sideways. I had a MT Quattro and it was not mounted sideways
I guess not
@Kris Nicholson once you get all the parts for the swap its just plug and play no coding or anything required.
hey you didn't mention the plastic coolant junction pipe buried down at the back of the engine that weeps and then fails and is a complete pita to replace because you do it all blind. Ask me how I know.

BIG G yup! we call it the “asshole bolt”.
It took me 2 days to get the driver side bolt out...
I ended up heating the aluminum to 400 degrees and using an air powered chisel.
A NIGHTMARE indeed.
It's it that bad? I have to do one on my A8
@@JDJD-mw9rr it can be real bad.if you soak the bolt at both ends with penetrating fluid every other day for about a week before the job it will give you a real good chance at getting it out,a bit of heat around the part the bolt goes through can make a huge difference also but just be careful the rubber on the upper control dont catch fire. you can pick up a butane blow torch kit on ebay for a few pound/dollars,one that has a trigger,so handy
Do these 2.0 TFSI engines have any problem with the oil pump? (the oil pump balance shaft hex key is too weak) Or is it just the 2.0 diesel's weakpoint?
I have a similar condition B7 2.0 TDI manual with 296.000 km (184k miles) and I have already had it repaired preemptivly. I want is to reach 500.000 km. :)
BTW I'd love to see that manual conversion in a video.
Uper ball joint check was false, have to turn the wheel fully to the end left and right and then on each turn push 12 a clock to see if there is any play. Under u have to use a bar and often before and after the wheel been turned left and right.
Have the CVT on my 2008 S Line DTM. Got the car on the cheap. Really love the CVT. With the paddle shifters, it was actually the most expensive option back then. Great mpg and faster than either the manual or tiptronic. The paddle shifters are a must have. Good video. Changed the fluid using Amzoil. No issues whatsoever. Btw, Audi does not have a chemical plant. Their fluid is made by Motul. You can buy it for less than half the price. These cars are worth the trouble of fixing up. Ive owned two Honda’s and three Toyota’s and the have little or no driving enjoyment. Just point a to point b. Absolutely love my Audi B7.
Maintained my fsi meticulously and it turded out at 195k miles
was it a CVT?
Dsg
@@progmanmike Dsg is prolly more unreliable than cvt. And 195k miles is pretty good
@Steven Strain
It had some blowby which is normal, but then one day just suddenly it started draining coolant into the engine. The DSG just needed a clutch pack at around 120k ever since then the DSG had been problem free. I'm thinking in a year or so I'll have the disposable income to hit up integrated engineering for their built short block.
Head gasket failure. There are plenty of engines out there you can get for around $500-$1000. 2.0 FSI is a decent engine. Aside from couple weak points.
I'm not sure why CVT is so hated. Done 213k miles in my B7 Avant and not had a problem, also got the paddles too. I've never drive a manual version of my car so I don't know. But CV boots and track rods and the AC compressor are always problems on these. Will be getting rid of it soon though as I want either a new A6 3.0 TDI or a Q7 if they are good choices
That's good to hear. On 112k miles and it concerns me. Mines a b8 so should be even more reliable as the earlier ones had the problems, according to my mechanic. Do you change the oil every 40k?
The rear diff is missing!
I'm going to look at a 2.0T Auto car soon. Don't want a 2.0T, don't want an Auto, but it runs & drives and I want an Audi. Daily it for a while then when something inevitably dies maybe do a VR6 manual swap lol.
Garbage for those which buy cars just to show up. The Audi starts with quattro torsen, as well al longitudinally mounted engine (is no torsen center diff otherwise anyway).
That car is equipped for a 89yo widow, cvt+fwd (as i know, anyway is no cvt quattro, because that garbage gearbox barely works on fwd and low-medium torque engines.. a hi-torque engine and 2 more diff's would destroy cvt at first launch😂).
Was 1500 because no other granny were there to buy it, so..
I have the same year count. I've done a laundry list of repairs on this vehicle. I have the 2.0t Quattro. I love this car. I do have one problem i can't seem to get rid of. And that is uneven idle and acceleration. I've done, coils, plugs, air filter, mass air flow, map sensor, vacuum pump, coolant flange, timing belt, turbo, pvc, and lastly regular oil and coolant changes. It doesn't struggle to stay on. It bounces back and forth about 100 rpm when cold and as i begin the morning. I warm up all my cars in the morning and this one is no exception. The problem persists for about an hour then goes away. Any ideas?
I think I drove like 40,000 miles over when my timing belt was due.. Wasn’t trying to prove anything, just worked a lot , now my B7 A4 has almost 230,000 (daily driven) finally replaced the oem turbo and upgraded the clutch ..
I wish you would have inspected the CVT mounts. I'm having trouble finding info about the transaxle mounts.
I had a B7 A4 w/ manual & Sline. I didn't know Audi had a CVT ever! Then i made some research and it's on Frontrak only! Shame on you for buying a non Quattro Audi!!! ;). But seriously, they are uber rare in canada since Quattro is a must. Cheers!

Squared Donut Don’t. I had an 08 A4 6spd auto in pretty good condition. I didn’t have too many problems but consumables like brakes are expensive. (At least if its your first car) My control arms were warn as well as the leaky mounts as shown in the video. You’ll be spending way more than its worth in repairs. My car was a late model so it even had the revisions done for a lot of trouble spots. Toyota is your friend. Stack some bread and get a well sorted B8 A4 as your second car if you really want to ride german. Just make sure to put aside a few thousand for that too.
I bought the 2015 Audi A4 Quattro as my first car last year with 51k miles and only one owner. The history record for the 2015 A4 is spotless and very reliable with barley any issues. If you do consider Audi as a first car please take your time and do as much research as possible on the history record for repair cost and how much it cost to maintain. Sounds like you where putting in park and axles where still spinning
You forgot to mention the cam timing chain and tensioner, the often overlooked intake valve smasher!
This is an FSI engine. Has a timing belt and not a chain. You are thinking about the 2.0 TSI motor that has a timing chain and the TSI came to the US in late 08 and the engine cover on VWs said TSI. FSI motors have cam follower issues.
@@kylemandt527 Em no I'm not mistaken, the FSI engine has a timing belt AND a timing chain. It has a timing belt from crank to exhaust cam, then a chain between exhaust and intake cam. The cam chain and tensioner setup also has an oil pressure controlled phaser on the exhaust cam, this is how variable valve timing is achieved on the FSI. You've just highlighted the 'often overlooked' part of my original post!
You probably already changed it but I saw your vvt solenoid n205 valve was leaking at the back of the head. It'll make the car do wacky idle stuff.
The biggest problem with this car is that it is a Front Wheel Drive Audi. Those should have never existed.

The mileage would be helpful to determine if it worth tinkering with.
13:39 I understand Denso for the most part is not a major supplier for VW/Audi, but they supply at the very least one part on every vehicle to just about every automotive manufacturer in the world. They are also owned by Toyota and supply most parts for toyotas. A bit surprised at how you would say they are bad quality or not a very good value. Not surprised at all you would recommend Bosch hahah.
