Finally somebody acknowledged that ‘childrens book’. The story from Struwwelpeter that haunted me most as a kid was the dreadful story about Harriet and the match
Im a year late but the one with the 2 cats? Yikes! It was one of the saddest stories in that book for sure! The only one that i chould tolarate was the greedy girl who got stuck in the Moon because it was so cartoony and not terrifying!

my Oma also used to read Struwwelliese to me which is way less brutal but I was still terrified of Lieses mom slamming her head into a bowl and keeping her underwater all while smiling like an angel just because Liese didn't want to wash herself

I remember a different version of the story where the mother drew faces on the boys fingers, then, when he sucked his thumb the face got smudged off, and then, during the night, all the other fingers came alive and cried out in terror. I don't remember much more, though.
