Before you get your tired replaced, check the warranty!! If you're still in warranty (which you probably are if you drive a lot), you can get a hefty rebate or discount! I've gotten new tires for about half the cost because of this.
Along those lines it does not hurt to to phone around to tire shops for pricing out tire repairs. There is a shop near me that repairs tires for free (nail hole). Guess where I bought my last set of tires.
You guys should do an episode on what to do if you're in an accident. How to keep control of the car if you spin out, what to do if the accident involves someone else, getting help, insurance and so on.
Seconding this! I was rear-ended a month ago. It would be good to hear about who to call first, what to do etc. I didn't realize, for example, that because the accident was on a busy stretch of road, the state police called tow trucks, so I didn't need to call AAA.

Emergency supplies also should include a first aid kit. Hopefully we'll never need it, but chances are you or someone you encounter on the road might. Be prepared.
Tru Blu probably, but that's not the only thing I've came across on the road. Our kit has been very usefull to many.
in germany thats not a should its a must. police can ask to see your first aid kit when they pull you over and you get a fine when you don't have one.
well so you can help when you encounter some kind of accident. the first aid kits you can buy for your car mostly include bandeges to stopp bleeding and to fixate, also oneway gloves to keep you safe as well and a bunch of other stuff, like a rescue blanket.
in order to get your driverslicense you also have to take a first aid course.
it might not be usefull in a really severe accident but most accident aren't that severe and the sooner the help the better.
Slightly related: I recently had a flat tire and got it off myself (yay!), and when I went to the tire shop to get it checked out, I mentioned that I just moved. The nice guys at the tire place gave me a new tire for FREE because they hoped I would make them my go-to car place. Well, I certainly will because they did not forget to be awesome! Hooray!!
Regular headlights, high beam headlights, break lights, reverse lights, left/right front/back turn signals, left/right front/back hazard lights... it's a lot of lights.
Hi there! I'm currently working at a garage so i thought i'd offer some thoughts:
-When you see things on the ground beneath your car, check to see if it's watery or oily (especially in the summer as condensation can drip from where your air conditioning comes from).
-i come from canada so our mechanics are pretty well trained to rotate your tires away from the positions they were in when you had them changed over last year. something to look out for when it comes to tire wear though, is uneven wear. this can be a sign that you should have your alignment checked, as well as being able to cause your car to pull more to one side while driving.
-When in doubt, feel free to call your friendliest neighbourhood mechanic: they'll more than likely but happy to answer any questions you have. (important to note though; i've heard and seen way too many stories of people being taken for a ride by a crooked mechanic so if you feel like you're being taken advantage of, GET A SECOND OPINION)
In regards to tyre pressure, remember to factor in temperature. If you live somewhere hot, don't set your pressure near the max because the pressure increases with temperature, and hot day + hot road = exploding tyre. Pressure increases 1psi for every 10°f or 5°C and bitumen can be 30°C hotter than ambient temperature.
Also, for those of us who live where it snows, a snow shovel and a couple of old blankets are also a good idea.
How to Adult, you should make a video for what to do in a car accident and insurance claims.
Remember, if you are in a snowey area, talk about all weather/snow tires, to get an idea of when to get them, and plan tire replacement so it coincides with getting snow tires. Though of course if you're on your doughnut, get that changed, they're not made to go far. Also while checking for leaks, place a piece of cardboard. So you are not confusing your leak with someone else especially if you share parking spots (like in condos or apartments. Also it easiet to guage the severity of the leak.
ALWAYS keep two sets of warm blankets in your car. I was on a trip back from a concert with a friend of mine, when his car broke down. We had to wait 30 minutes in the middle of winter in the dark for the ADAC (the car emergency service of here) to arrive. (DO NOT SIT IN THE CAR WHILE WAITING! There have been multiple occasions, when people crashed into the back of a car on the side of the road!)

I know I'm late to the party, but regarding tires, especially in colder climates--check for weather cracking in addition to tread depth, especially if it's not driven very often (thus the rubber doesn't warm up and expand). If there's any cracking, even if you have full tread, YOU NEED NEW TIRES.
If you're gonna spend 15$ on a dial gauge, you can usually spend that same 15$ on a combination filler gauge that has one button to put air in and one button to let air out; when you push neither you get the reading. You won't be able to use it at gas stations but there's lots of good reasons to own your own air pump, or better, an air compressor
Very good. I'd add in changing your air filters yourself to the "under the hood" part. My dealership wants $140 to replace both the cabin and engine air filters, when they're $10 a piece on Amazon. Also, if you've got the spare money, an external jumper battery is useful. That way you can jump your car without anyone else, and most double as a usb charger as well.

Whatever car maintenance you can learn to do on your own or a friend/family member is willing to do for you for cheap (or free!) is well worth it. A lot of the cost in having you car maintained is paying for the service of a professional. It's always nice to skip that cost entirely when you can.

If you know how to change a tire (which you should if you own a car), then you can rotate the tires yourself! Only takes 45 min or so. No need for a mechanic to do it.
I'd actually recommend against this. Over-torquing or under-torquing [though rare] could cause a lot of trouble. In addition, if you don't have a garage, a decent jack, stands, and the correct wrench, it becomes a lot tougher to accomplish. It's easier to pay a shop like $20 to have it done for you.

Hey guys on my new channel I do a deep dive on how to really take care of your car (as deep as you want to go) and buy used tires the right way.
If you've got a car, grab a Haynes Manual haynes.com/en-us/ - it's like the how it works book specific to your car. it's a book that details a complete tear down and reconstruction of nearly every make/model of car. It has pictures of every step of how to fix/replace something from your windshield wipers, tires, and headlights to the big stuff like transmission, alternators, and coils. It also has a really hard trouble-shooting section that can help you figure out what's making that weird clunking noise you heard... They run about $15-$20 and have saved me hundreds of dollars because who knew you could just replace the windshield wiper motor by yourself??!
I really wish I could get a small simple electric truck like a 1998 S10 EV with modern batteries and drive train. Or better yet a classic dodge A-100 pickup with a simple modern EV drive train. Why do all new cars have to have complicated auto-driving systems and "infotainment centers" that are multiple years behind new cell phones in capability before the car even hits the showroom floor?

Freya Eli people who live in areas that have snowy/icy conditions in the winter may need it for extra traction if they get stuck. If you don't get snow/ice, don't worry about it.
Also if you happen to have a gas or oil spill! It's unusual, but it did happen to me once.

While kitty litter is a good lifehack when you're in a pinch - it's better to get rock salt if you have the luxury of planning ahead.
I was pumping gas one time hands-free and the nozzle's mechanism that is supposed to release the clip didn't, so gas suddenly was dumping all over the ground. Luckily there was a bucket of kitty litter next to the gas pump so I threw a bunch of it on the puddle of gas on the ground to absorb it
What other emergency supplies should I keep in my car/garage, commenters? My friend keeps oil and antifreeze in the trunk but I think that's better for the garage, no?

Google search your cars make and model and "alternator replacement" in Google, look for a RUclips video or picture tutorial on a forum post. It might be way easier than you think
Yea it looks pretty easy I'm just kinda short on cash and a new alternator is expensive so I hope I can maybe rebuild or repair it for cheaper
Call a few parts stores for pricing. You often get a credit for your old part (called a "core" charge) when you purchase a new part. They send out the old part for rebuilding and then resell it. Also Briansmobil1 has some vids on rebuilding alternators.
