Are you a person who is easily distracted? In the midst of a busy day at the office finding creative space to concentrate and forge ahead is a real challenge. Here's a suggestion... it's possible to set up a creative space by playing baroque background music as you work. Not your style? If you're willing to give it a trial, the results may surprise you. Here's why...
In a three year research study, Maya Ruvinshteyn and Leonard Parrino, instructors in math at Essex County College and Rutgers-Newark, found when they played baroque background music in their classes, it made a difference. Here's how...
86 % of students surveyed enjoyed class more with baroque background music whereas 76 % of students without any music found the class enjoyable
33 % of students found math challenging whereas 46 % in the class without the baroque music found it challenging.
Earlier research findings show that Baroque music enhances learning of foreign languages and improves performance in some types of tests.
Why Baroque Music? Research reveals that Baroque music pulses between 50 to 80 beats per minute. Baroque music "stabilizes mental, physical and emotional rhythms," according to Chris Boyd Brewer, "to attain a state of deep concentration and focus in which large amounts of content information can be processed and learned."
Music affects your brain waves. Slower baroques, such as Bach, Handel, Vivaldi or Corelli, can create mentally stimulating environments for creativity and new innovations. Alpha brain waves originate from the occipital lobe during periods of relaxation. As you relax you can move out of stressors that otherwise impede your creativity.

It is my favourite music in the world, but I am totally unable to study with Baroque music in the background. Maybe because it's touched me very deeply since I was a kid, don't know. Just too much going on in it, too beautiful, too interesting, totally occupies my mind and draws my attention away from other things. For me, the absolute best music for studying is renaissance, esp. sacred music that kind of flows in the background without much rhythm or recurring main theme.

    • @Forseti6288
      @Forseti6288 9 лет назад +5

Yeah I agree. I can't focus on anything else. It's the most distracting thing in the world. Why would I listen to that when I'm trying to study? lol. It makes more sense to keep the most fascinating things out of reach, wouldn't you say? =P

I agree with the main post; this has lifted my mood this afternoon.
The baroque music integrates human consciousness, the finest example being the singular mind of Bach.
Here I am hearing a lot of non-Bach, which is good because I don't experience enough of those other baroque masters... Bach may be the master of them (and all composers) but his music of course excludes certain styles and moods as any mortal's might.

      +Giovanni Battista Vivaldi
You know who else I'm really into lately? Zelenka.
His counterpoint rivals Bach's at it's best, no small feat. In fact, there are times when I find Zelenka's style even more expressive. He's highly chromatic as well.
Bach was impressed with Zelenka and more and more of his pieces can be found on RUclips.

I love Baroque music. But I cannot study with it playing. Why? Because my major was in music and everytime I hear this music I'm constantly listening with an ear to doing "form and analysis". It's a drawback of having studied music, I suppose ;-) It's hard to just listen and not get onesself involved in the more intrinsic aspects of the music. For serious study....well, actually for me the quieter the better. That all being said baroque can be relaxing....or invigorating. It depends on the piece one chooses :-)

Excellent combination. When I was in college I learned the Baroque Music reset the alpha waves in the brain making studying more effective. One study sited that students were allowed to listen to baroque while testing and results were much improved than without. And wouldn't you know it -- Handel is one of my favorites; in particular, The Four Seasons.

What do you mean "slower baroques, such as Bach, Vivaldi, etc"? Why are they slow? Each have very fast works. Especially Bach. Also, I think anyone actually interested in this music will show a different result, since I, and anyone else I know who listens to this can't pay attention to anything else while a piece they like is playing, since it's so involved, complicated, interesting. I would need that turned off to do math. :P That being said, I'm sure it's good for the brain to listen to it.
