Some trivia: - Daisuke in Japanese means _Big Helper_ - Swans(sea) are very protective with their offspring even adopt other orphan cygnets, but will kill them if they are not able to leave the nest aka not fit to survive the world - Horse usually symbolize "the impetuosity of desire" or sexual energy without constraint, which Jimmy seems to like it so much
The swansea part is actually super interesting. I wonder if the devs named him before or after writing the story? Like, was he inspired by swans, or did he remind them of swans?
SPOILER warning: - Curly laughs when Jimmy takes the gun because before the crash, he believed that Jimmy was a good guy and friend, despite s*xually assaulting Anya. Anya hid the gun from Jimmy. But seeing Jimmy take the gun and proving him wrong, Curly is laughing because he lost it. - 1:51:44 She confessed to Jimmy she was pregnant with his child from the assault, only Curly knew until that point. That was why Curly tried to console Jimmy. Jimmy knows that if they land, he will be screwed. So, he crashed the ship. - Swansea was saving the pod for Daisuke (2:09:00), since he was the youngest and had a future if he escaped. That is why Anya said “…if it has to be this way” in that conversation she was having with him before Jimmy interrupted. - She also told Swansea what Jimmy did to her, so Swansea lost it after Daisuke died and wanted to avenge her. That was what the shoot-out was. Even then, there was the possibility that Swansea wasn't even trying to kill Jimmy, since we see that he was tied to the chair and shot dead by Jimmy. Remember, we are seeing from Jimmy's perspective, and like Smiii7y said, from his perspective it is hard to see him as a villain at first. - Anya was nauseous, giving Curly the painkillers because the act of forcing medicine down his throat reminded her of Jimmy forcing himself on Anya - The ultrasound part was him showing regret for the baby he created. Note that he has an event for Daisuke's death (no turning back scene), Swansea (the cemetery), Curly and the baby. But not for Anya. He was always disrespectful and never regretted what he did to her. - 1:18:09, She was counting down the months left till she goes into labour. Also, she asked about why there are no locks for the sleeping quarters but in the medical room. At this point, you can guess why she asked that.
I read this about halfway through the video and it changed the perspective immediately. Everything made more sense to that point and I'm even catching on to Jimmy being manipulative to the crew. Still not getting the point of the horse as of yet. At just before Jimmy is about to "knock out" swansea
2:34:00 Actually, this is quite an interesting perspective cause it really reflects a lot about how Jimmy views himself as well. As a player, you cant digest that the character you play as isnt the hero of the story, or at least is the cause of everything bad that happens. Jimmy doesn’t recognise that hes the cause, whether he truly believes it or is in denial about it. He doesnt think what he did to Anya was wrong, he doesnt think crashing the ship because he knew Anya would tell everyone what he did was wrong. And you as the player isnt privy to this information or cant make sense of the situation because how vague they intentionally make it, puts the blame on Curly instead, or point fingers to Swansea for ending Daisuke, or lash out at Anya because he has to do everything on the ship. Because you as the main character, as the ‘captain’ can never be wrong, right? This game really does have a lot of layers, a lot of things that you really need to think about and thats why i love how disconnected and chaotic, yet emotionally distressing this game is. Glad you put your thoughts at the end :)
This is true art. Curating the feelings of the character into the player. Spec Ops: The Line does this as well from naming the player as a special guest, to directly calling out the player for their actions in loading screens. Mouthwashing went with show and dont tell though and it's awesome for that. Both games make you walk the villains shoes. I like to think any of the player's commentary is the character's humanity obviously leaving and you are both simultaneously doing mental gymnastics to justify your actions. Alot of games try and cant really pull it off.
This game is also a great example of what an unreliable narrator can do for your story. Without going too deep into it, having the protagonist withholding information from the observer just lets you do so much and play with expectations in such cool ways.
I feel like they could've done more with Jimmy, they don't really tell much about him what exactly he did but at the same time it makes sense because he kept running away from responsibilities. I wished we knew more about his relationship with curly because the lengths he went thru to get him a job as a co pilot and everything
This, and what Smii7y said, reminds me of _Spec Ops: The Line_ [spoilers below for a game you can't buy anymore]: Spec Ops does a similar framing of perspective with Walker, using the distinction of The Player Character (as opposed to NPC) to grant Walker almost a moral free pass despite committing war crimes and other atrocities. It also constrained player agency to accentuate this effect (or rather, wrote the story to work in tandem with the limited agency). Walker is railroaded through all these things, and very few of them does the player actually get to choose in gameplay (and those that you do have end up meaningless). In turn, the overall story and Walker's dialogue repeats "I had no choice" - words the player has likely been telling themselves all along regarding gameplay constraints. Had you been reading about Walker's actions in a news article you'd be horrified and disgusted with his actions, and excuse none of it, but playing through it as a player you find yourself meeting Walker's rationalizations all on your own. The game's writing is very aware of the differences between player and audience, and makes the most of it. I could probably write for hours about Spec Ops. I normally come to Smii7y for "fun scary" more than "emotionally traumatizing", but it's one of my favorite examples of how to do it right, and I'm glad he caught on to Mouthwashing doing a similar thing.
If you pay attention hours before the judgment, you’ll see that Swansea never chases Jimmy with the axe. He just sits down at the table, and then Jimmy comes to shoot him. It’s all in Jimmy’s head as he stands in the medbay, trying to justify what he’s about to do.
Jimmy killed Swansea because he knew about his abuse to Anya. Either that or Jimmy absolutely lost his mind saying “I can fix this” while holding a gun at him.
AU when talking about space means Astronomical Units, 1AU is the distance between the Earth and the Sun. It was hilarious hearing smitty say “that’s gold right? I think AU is gold in the table of elements, I’M A GENIUS”
Curly was destined for greater Daisuke had a bright future being the youngest Anya was a genius nurse who managed to keep curly alive despite limited materials. She would've eventually passed her exam. Swansea had kids and a family to take care of. Jimmy had nothing. So he made sure no one else did either.
@@LIONGOD he was no boyfriend of hers, he forced himself upon her, that's why she was afraid of him, and why she was asking about the locks, and it's also why he crashed the ship, because once it lands he was screwed.
@@LIONGODi dont think you have truly understood the game if you think abusing someone and them getting pregnant will get him a "girlfriend" or at the very least you have severely misunderstood Anya as a character
the fact that when you see anya's body and shes holding her stomach could mean two things, a, the chest pain that comes with a paracetamol (aceatemetaphen) overdose, or b, shes pregnant and she knows killing herself will also cause the baby to die; (edit:) most sa victims dont want to carry their baby to term, but its still very reasonable for them to feel guilt about terminating the pregnancy. also, a smaller thing, the fact that her bed was next to the motion sensing pony statue, to make sure no one did anything to her while she was asleep. very messed up ):: anya deserved better man, i hate jimmy. thank you for playing this game had a great time watching this play through.
Honestly I dont think she had much remorse in regards to the Fetus. Her being SAd and all, most women dont really have much want for carrying that baby out till the end for obvious reasons. It's likely just the pain of the paracetamol.
@@historyman9436 Just because they don't want to carry the baby to term, doesn't mean they don't care about it. Especially in cases of SA abortions are rarely an easy decision.
swansea's speech, made me rethink EVERYTHING about my life the first time i played mouthwashing. now watching it again has had the same effect, hands down my favorite character. rest in peace old man
*To anyone wondering **_"What's with the horse?"._* It's a fucked up incarnate of both The Pony Express as a company and Jimmy's child in his own mind, hence the babies cries emanating from the Polle-worm during the vent chase and the "Or what should I call you? Old Man?" line from the Polle statue while Jimmy is having a breakdown during the last part of the game. Edit: further evidence is at the very beginning of the game when you think you're playing as Curly crashing the ship but you're actually Jimmy crashing it, the mangled Polle appearing in front of you is Jimmy thinking about the company going under and his unwanted child as he sits there contemplating what he's just done.
Just watched the whole video Smitty; Jimmy sexually abused Anya (implied from conversations) and intentionally crashed the ship as a failed murder-suicide attempt because due to the impending layoffs, he was going to have to bear responsibility for the kid. This has also lead to Anya breaking down, ultimately leading to her overdosing. While attempting to save Anya, Daisuke was injured in the process, and his wound became infected when Jimmy tried to use the mouthwash as an impromptu antiseptic. Swansea was guarding the cryogenic pod for Daisuke, but the infection led to Swansea euthanizing Daisuke. Also, before Swansea's execution, he was condemning Jimmy for his cowardice and selfishness in his last moments, and everything that you saw that was "unreal" was his hallucinations, but he ultimately led Curly into a cryogenic pod because this was his attempt to "fix the situation."
That last try to fix the situation was just as bad. Remember how they were the supposedly last manual freight cargo ships because of the company’s closure? The rest were supposed to be automated. Even jimmy’s attempt to help Curly probably gave him a delayed death of starvation 20 years into the future. If the ships were automated, who knows if they’d care to stop for wrecks? Everyone died a very painfully death. The actually evil person who was the cause of everyone’s misery got a quick death. That’s why the ending feels unsatisfying.
2:18:03 Ultrasound => Checking the Womb => See a Horse Earlier on his Psych Eval, Jimmy wrote "attracted to cartoon horses" He doesn't see Anya as a Human Being, he sees her as a Horse, hence the 'Horse inside of a Womb" Metaphor You're basically looking at your child @ 2:18:03
And on another layer, the horse is a symbol for the company he’s working for that could mess up his life at any time should Anya or any other crew mates let slip what he did. He’s “attracted to cartoon horses” in the same way he’s attracted to Anya/any other woman: power. He hates that the company has so much power he doesn’t and never will have, he hates that Anya has the power of information and sympathy and is smarter than him. It’s the same and why he struggles to put a confident yes on the psych eval-is it really attraction to cartoon horses, or the attraction to the power it would give him to be able to fck over the company mascot? (Also: Anya sleeps next to a statue of Polle instead of in the sleeping quarters. This statue is motion activated and would be able to tell her if jimmy was coming near her while she slept. Messed UP)
I really recommend that you watch or read about the characters and plot, especially to better understand what Jimmy did to Anya and why he crashed the ship. It’s a great game and I’m glad you played it! You are one of my favorite RUclipsrs!
Honestly Smitty is one of the few youtubers I trust to be media literate enough to understand this game which makes me really happy that he added that segment at the end of the vid.
Can you imagine this from Curly’s POV. (Spoiler warning if you haven’t finished the video) Your best friend SA’s a member of your crew, and when you ask him about it, he crashes the entire ship. You are horribly disfigured in the crash, and madness sets into your crew. You watch one crew member overdose on painkillers, one get mauled in a vent (and, assuming Curly could see down the hallway, an axe rammed into his face), and then your best friend comes into your room to set you on a table in front of the corpses of all your other friends, and proceeds to EAT YOUR FUCKING LEG. THEN he has the audacity to look you in the eyes and say “It’s okay. *I fixed it”* knowing full well he wasn’t talking about the crash, at least not fully. And the final thing you see before being frozen for 20 years, unable to speak or scream, is the flash of a gunshot as yet another friend dies. Insanity.
One thing though is that Curly knew Anya was SA-ed before she became pregnant then she told him about that too after telling Jimmy he was the father. When he asked who's the father, Anya said he knew. (Watching the game in chronological order really made everything make sense.) The thing is though, he wanted to prioritise the crew as a whole and was stretched thin trying to keep the crew together. That was his flaw, he was too much of a people-pleaser. He had all the authority and power yet did nothing when a vulnerable crew member got violated and instead "smoothed" things over between the two because he "knew" who Jimmy was and was basically close with him. He may be a victim but he was NOT innocent. He simply reaped the consequences of being a bystander to his friend's sins and in turn becoming the next victim to his beloved friend, Jimmy.
@@allingquilatonestacion4353 You are ignoring the fact that Curly thought Anya as a friend too. I think in his mind the SA was something that can be ignored before because he had bigger worry aka they are all gonna be fired. Yes getting SAd is bad, but imagine in their universe is more or less lethal company like, life has no value, so them getting fired would be the end of their lives. So as he is worrying over it, he was hit with the information of her pregnancy which hit him like a truck, you could see it in him. He isnt a victim, he isnt innocent, hes a saint. If you think otherwise you are Jimmy not like the SA way but the narcissistic way. Jimmy thought before the crash that he was better than Jimmy yet Curly is the captain, after the events of crash he believed he may not be better but he can ofcourse replace Curly. After everything killing everyone and putting him in a pod in a state where one would rather be dead, he said than Curly was better than him but he never said he himself was a bad person, he technically implies that he is still a person, Curly is just better than him. He is such a sht person that Swansea said to take the pod and say whatever he wanted as the story implying report after he got rescued from the pod. He meant that he is such a sht person he thought Swansea was keeping the pod for himself(this is a double retort to the player as they also judged Swansea by his looks, age and speech) in actuality he kept the pod for daisuke as he was the only one who would have profited most if he had survived. Jimmy sending him through the vents made Swansea lose his sht and then proceeding to keep the barely alive Daisuke alive a fate worse than death, something he is also doing with curly. Swansea cant see Jimmy going through that so he manned up and TOOK RESPONSIBILITY by killing him, he didnt have to be the good person, he just wanted the best for daisuke. None of which even in same situation Jimmy did, and even at the end where he should have killed Curly and taken the pod and accepting his sins and reporting the truth after being rescued, he put Curly in it as if he was doing him a favor by being a better person and giving him the pod, and then killed himself again escaping from his responsibilities. He was piece of sht and a coward even in death.
Something you learn when it comes to grooming (don’t worry this is relevant) is that they can be very hard to detect, even if they’re your friend and you know them well; they precisely play off your friendship to make you assume they aren’t really that bad. In fact befriending people is step one of their manipulation tactics, and they’re patient enough to work slowly over time to where you can’t detect it. This is effectively how Jimmy could get outed as an assaulter and a nut job and Curly doesn’t do much about it.
@@imtiaze642 But that is the main problem with Curly he did nothing when he found out instead of dealing with the issue in any concrete way. Opting instead to comfort her abuser and belittling her perspective, turning it into something unimportant to the point HE FORGOT WHAT SHE TOLD HIM. Even if the company would punish them for taking official actions he could have done so much off the record he IS the captain. Like scheduling the crew so Jimmy isn't alone with Anya, Giving Anya a lock to her room or setting her up to sleep in med bay, Convince Daisuke and Swansea to help him lock up Jimmy, etc. etc. etc. there was so much Curly could have done but he didn't. To put it in the games own words, he would rather ignore the dead pixel, believing in the false illusion on the screen instead of taking responsibility and fixing the screen. Just because he has good morals doesn't make his action morally good. He is not a saint FAR from it
Very cool to see Smitys thoughts at the end. This is absolutely a game that needs a second to digest and go over in your head and was very happy to hear your thoughts on it after you processed everything.
Probably a lot of people jumped on this kind of comment, but I’ll give my two cents on this game as well: This is genuinely such a fascinating game. It really lures you in with this feeling that it’s going to be another creepy space monster game, but it’s much more than that: it’s simply a group of people trapped with not this lovecraftian entity or alien being, but literally just another person who is irredeemably evil. It’s one of the few games I can really remember recently where a second playthrough after your first COMPLETELY recontextualizes the story of the game. If you remember the conversation Curly and Anya had in the lounge area, Anya mentions she can see a dead pixel in the top right corner that she always knows is there while Curly doesn’t notice it and just looks at the big picture. That’s the perfect metaphor for the game right there: on a first playthrough, we’re in Curly’s mindset, where we only have his and Jimmy’s perspectives, so we don’t know truly what’s going on and think Jimmy is doing his best in a stressful situation, but further into the game and after completing it, after learning all about who Jimmy is, what he did, and just how utterly awful of a creature he was, it’s all you can notice in a second playthrough, especially when looking at Anya’s reactions to him. She’s not a clumsy nurse who can’t do a job anymore, she’s a person trapped in an iron coffin and scared to death because the man who SA’d, forcefully impregnated her is in there with her AND now in a position of authority. Jimmy’s not a stressed out new captain trying to keep his crew alive; he’s a belligerent narcissist obsessed with control and slowly losing his mind while pretending to be a hero, even though every bad thing on the tulpar is directly his fault. Anya became the dead pixel to us…and in some respect, so did Jimmy, because now that’s all we can think about.
Omg I love this channel he’s made. This feels like the real side of him. The real side that compliments his other personality. This is beautiful. This channel feels like a new step him his life.
I have a feeling that this channel is one way Smii7y has to help reduce burnout. Gives him a more personal freedom of expression and a chance to dive deeper into the emotional side of games than the normal chaos of the other channels. Granted, creating content to keep from burning out on creating other content may still lead to overall burnout, having this more open forum to display a more intellectual side might give him enough of a break from "chaos with the boys" to make a few more "regular" vids before a vacation is required to refresh the mental batteries. I do like it when seemingly chaotic creators like Smii7y, take a bit and do a deeper dive into games they really like/love and give their take/insight on the experience. Kinda like when Soviet Womble does one of his video essays on games he's passionate about. It shows there's more to a creator than their typical on-screen persona.
I really appreciate the reflection at the end of the vid. Not many people who played the game even brought it up. But especially for this game thanks for that :) Edit: I will say though, Curly is also at fault. There are many deep dive videos that go into the same point, but Anya told him what Jimmy did, and Curly didn't confront Jimmy about it because he's his friend. Curly's a people pleaser type of person, wanting everyone to be happy. He ignored the red flags. And poetically, after the crash he's forced to watch as the consequences of his inaction unfolds, bedbound and not able to do anything, even if he wanted to. His inaction lead him to be forced into more inaction yknow? But man this game, its just so well made.
Absolutely loved how you handled and approached this game. I'd been avoiding it because I had been spoiled on the themes and have been afraid of seeing people's raw approaches to it and possibly missing the entire point, but I decided to watch your playthrough because I love your content, and I really was not disappointed. I think you did great and I'm glad you included your thoughts after days of processing them.
to add recommendations, watch kubz scouts if ur open! he also puts his thoughts in at the end and him being a father makes his comprehension so much more important to me personally x]
something about Smitty as a creator and his personality makes him playing these kinds of games and stuff like the Beginner's Guide so insanely enjoyable, and i can't wait for him to find more. not to mention I've already watched a playthrough of this, but i couldn't help to watch it again anyway. (it's actually quite enjoyable knowing what happens as i can understand precisely what's beyond each of the actions now, and it all makes even more sense)
im really glad you fully mentioned and atleast slightly understood what happened to anya, a lot of content creators dont really touch on it, so thank u :D loved the playthrough
I think there’s something with how Jimmy sees women as less than human, because the horse theme kept coming up - the psych eval, the baby in the ultrasound, and the final conversation before the end of the game. Idk how to explain it, but I feel like there’s something more there symbolically
There definitely is!!! I need to read more of the creator’s notes on it but there are aspects to this that make it more about Jimmy’s superiority complex than his actual attractions towards women or fictional horses. For one, he’s working at a company where the logo is a horse and which is the only face we see for the pony express-he’s afraid of the pony express and higher ups and everyone that has power completely outside of his reach, but we never see anyone past his own status (Curly; co-pilot) and so every bit of fear he feels from not being top dog is because of this power imbalance and facelessness. He wants to fck over the company before it can ruin him, but has no idea how. He takes it out on Anya, who’s (in his eyes) a significantly inferior crew member that assuages that feeling of being helpless because it puts him in power for a moment (ugh). Anya starts sleeping outside of the sleeping quarters, in the common area where there’s a motion activated statue of Polle which could tell her if Jimmy was trying to approach her at night, and at some point Jimmy broke it between Anya dying and Swansea dying His complex only affects him enough to make him wary of other men (Swansea) and the faceless company and the faceless baby that he’s responsible for, and notice how in each event scene he’s only being chased when the antagonist is silent? Anya’s power is in her words, as is the company’s, and we never see a conflict with them directly until Jimmy imagines the fetus. With Swansea, he equally pursues and is almost hunting Swansea instead of the other way around, but with Curly…curly is quiet. Just a judgmental eye forcing him to think about his actions again and again but nothing is said. We don’t hear a word out of him except out of Jimmy’s own demented head, and the company and the baby are never directly heard from either-except for the motivational posters of Polle. The baby is where Pony Express and Anya both intersect and HE’S the one being chased, the silence maddening him more than words could. The only thing he’s truly attracted to is power over others. And the only thing he’s truly afraid of is the power his responsibilities have over him, making him physically back away because he’s so averse to it. Sorry this is a whole essay btw omg
I almost feel like it’s trying to say Jimmy considers the baby to be the Tulpar’s child instead of his… like he only did such horrible things because he’s a “victim of circumstance.” Which is why he can’t picture the fetus as human… because then he would have to admit to himself that he made it.
@ Oh god like a “any guy would’ve done the same in my situation” type thing as if it’s the pony express’ fault he did it just because they put a woman on board with him. Jimmy 😭😭😭
These are both great points, and there definitely is a huge focus on his complexes and lack of taking responsibility for any of his actions. But I still think there's an aspect to do with how there's only two female coded characters in this game; Anya and Polle the Pony Express mascot. It feels like there's something there with how Anya used the Polle statue as a motion alarm, but it ends up being broken or disabled by Jimmy. It's kind of an opposite to Curly, someone who should have helped her and had the power to do something, but didn't. Polle wasn't able to physically help Anya, but would have been able to warn her. That feels significant, like how women will warn each other about creepy men. But Jimmy broke that connection between the female coded characters
I think the way you were conflicted roleplaying Jimmy is absolutely fucking perfect for the game because you being unable to see Jimmy as a bad guy is exactly how Jimmy sees himself, he thinks he's everyone's savior and places the blame on everybody else, never seeing the wrong in his actions, by the end you literally went through Jimmy's character arc of realizing "jesus christ... I was the villain all along" and i think it made for a great, unique playthrough.
The really hard thing about this game is that it convinces you from the start that Curly is the villain and Jimmy is the good guy. And you can really put yourself in the character's shoes and understand what they feel or at least feel like it and when the truth is finally given to you most people literally can't understand what happens for a while because it challenges everything they had learned in the past two or so hours about the characters
Smitty (and anyone else) if you liked mouthwashing I BEG you to play SIGNALIS, the story and lore are so amazing, the story is gut wrenching and beautiful, the soundtrack is phenomenal and it’s got similar graphics if that’s what you’re into. Also just a little spooky (If Smitty plays it I’ll buy merch 🙂)
i watched manlybadasshero play it aaaages ago but my attention span couldnt pay attention (i dont even remember if i made it past the first video part). i love gut wrenching games and feeling miserable, thank you for convincing me to get back to it ahaha
im really glad you gave some perspective at the end, i was waiting for you to make connections about things (specifically the anya stuff) and knowing you took time to process things really makes glad. I told myself i would finally watch a playthrough of this game if you played it and im glad you went about this pretty respectfully.
I'm glad you took some time to think about & come back to share your thoughts. I've watched 2 other people play and they didn't seem to understand what was going on with Anya. "I hid the gun so he can't get it." "Why is there a lock on the med bay door but not the crew quarters?" The curled up position she's in when talking to Curly. "I don't want him coming in here anymore." And then the ship crashes and he's in her space every damn day to check on Curly. But JIMMY felt trapped? I'm infuriated by Jimmy. All this to say, I'm really glad you played this. I've been looking forward to it since you mentioned it. I'd also like to back up the people suggesting Inscryption. I think you'd really like it. It's not scary. I'd describe it as unsettling if anything.
For context (spoilers) Jimmy SA’d Anya and got her pregnant, but when he found out he got her pregnant he decided he didn’t want to deal with it and crashed the ship instead. Swansea was trying to protect Anya, and (in my opinion) was saving the cryo pod for her (could’ve been for Daisuke though). In the end he decided to “take responsibility” by saving Curly and taking the easy way out. All around a fantastically written game.
58:42 I’m probably wrong but I believe Swansea was telling Anya here that he’d like to save the cryo pod for daisuke Out of all of them Daisuke seems to have the most promising life if he was saved after being put in the cryo pod
@@kageoriithat’s fair, I like that the devs left it up for interpretation. My only thought would be Swansea may want to save Anya due to her being pregnant, but I 100% could see either being true (although based on his dialogue about Daisuke later on I’m torn lol)
Also at the beginning/in the flashbacks Jimmy is near the cockpit on the way from utility, probably just coming back from trying to find the axe and the gun. This is probably the moment he realized Anya had hidden the gun and Swansea had taken the axe and he couldn’t kill Anya in a straightforward way because of it, and he instead had to crash the whole ship to get himself out of taking responsibility for everything
pod was def for daisuke thats why Anya said “…if it has to be this way” in that conversation she was having with swansea before jimbothy interrupted. Daisuke was the youngest and the one with the most hope for the future
honestly, I loved seeing Smii7y play (get it) this. This was honestly an incredible experience and smii7y's voices for the characters made it so much better. I would LOVE if you kept doing different characters and doing more games like this. PLEASE keep playing games like these. Seeing your perspective of these games enhances it so much.
YES IT’S FINALLY HERE!!! 🙏😩 time to watch edit: just finished, i appreciate the after-playthrough thoughts at the end! and his reactions to certain parts were so raw it was fun to watch, especially 1:46:03 😭 thanks for playing this fantastic game!
oh i adored your little ending, digesting talk. you articulated your thoughts so well and i loved the insight into your mind and feelings so much. tysm it was wonderful to listen to. it definitely did a lot for the video and i don’t think it woudl be the same without it. a little post game talk sesh definitely fit this one. ty :]
I really enjoyed having the introspective at the end because yeah this game DEFINITELY deserves it. Also yeah I think it'd be cool to see more games like this on the channel!
May I just say, not only do I love to hear Smii7ys take on this game, which is very serious and respectful, I also love the roleplaying that he did! Despite him saying he doesn't do voice acting or messing up some lines, it was still very good overal! He really got into it which makes this playthrough all the more cool and I just loved how well he roleplayed and acted in it! Love when he does that, his acting is so underrated Like bro: ITS SO GOOD - 1:46:30
life is good man ❤ he genuinely sounded scared at 7:21 bro 2:15:43 ain’t no way he went from feeding a dude his own leg to “yay, smile! he’s happy! :D” 😂
I dont normally comment but, with Smi77ys new channel, ive never felt such raw connection and understanding from the content as well as from the content creator, thank you for letting us go on this journey with you, truly a work of art.
"Road 96" is a pretty cool game. You are a hitchhiker trying to flee the country and you get dropped in on all kinds of scenarios that happen on your route. from a music festival to a robbery you are forced into, a ride from a murders taxi driver or in the back of a limo with an out of control celebrity. And your actions effect your ultimate ending. there are like 30-35 different scenarios to play. I would love to see you handle yourself through them and i'm sure others will love to as well ;)
The thing I love about Smii7y playing walkthroughs is that he always lets the credits roll and credits the developers. That’s huge respect from me, Smii7y. Keep doing what you’re doing.
Hey smii7y I want to thank you because I’m at the lowest I’ve been in my mental health for a while and I want to thank you for making the only videos that have made me laugh in a long time. So truly thank you and keep up the good work.❤❤❤
Hey potato dude. You’re not alone, ok? I know what it’s like to be in your shoes and I’m really glad you stick around to spend time with us. Take care of yourself. You deserve it. Sending all the love to ya ❤❤❤❤
Still Wakes The Deep is a long game like this but the graphics are absolutely gorgeous, there's amazing voice acting, and great storytelling. It doesn’t take place in space, instead its set on an oil rig in the north sea. If you could try it out, that would be awesome.
YESSSSS I love this game!!! I am so glad you are playing this! I have been begging some of my friends to watch someone play it. I am gonna watch this then send it to them. Sorry for my excitement y'all, I just whisper yelled "Oooohhhh!! YESSSSS!!!" Edit- I have just been sitting and typing- I am SO excited to watch him play this traumatic asf game. This honestly messed me up for a good day or 2- worth it. I am so excited that i can't watch it cause I don't want it to be over, you know? Im rambling, let me watch this and bake and hang with my dog Edit(post watch) - I liked that he took the time to process and talk about the themes in this game. It really bring this playthough to another level. That really is appreciated, Smitty (I'm gonna say it, even if you dont see it)
I love your commentary at the end! One of the best parts of the game is putting you in the shoes of jimmy and Ive seen shows that do that allow people to realize through the character that they need to do better in their own lives. Games the humanize even the worst actions are a great tool for everyone realize that anyone can do harm whether or not that want to, even you. Anyways this is one of my favorite playthroughs of this game due to how invested you get! Keep up the amazing content!
YEAHHHH!!!!! edit: just finished watching, and for one, i've never heard this man be more devastated through my (albeit short) time following his channels. second, AU refers to Astronomical Units when referring to distance in space, specifically within our solar system, beyond that distance is light years. third, the themes of this game, once you get deeper and deeper into its symbolism is so dark and focuses on so many heavy topics, i love it and I absolutely adored watching this!
Really do appreciate your ending summary. it a game that requires a lot of after thought to process the metaphors and what actually just happened. Don't need it for every game but it was well deserved for this one and a great wrap up to the video. Love this new channel Smii7ty, Keep it up!
I think Jimmy’s insistence on Curly living is him still acting out his “revenge” or anger or whatever you’d wanna call it. He talked about Curly being remembered as a failed captain after finding out they were being laid off. I think the reason he was so adamant about Curly living when everyone else was saying to let him go, is so that Curly will survive to witness himself be remembered as a failed captain and have his dreams of finding something new taken away from him
I love this channel, its such a sharp departure from the main channels, and I love that! It's really nice to get to hear you experience and talk about your thoughts on games, hearing your passion for gaming is so awesome
After watching many playthroughs of Mouthwash, I think Smii7y had one of if not the best voiceovers for each character. Now when I watch other people playing the game I just imagine his version of the character's voice in my head and it's hilarious.
Oh my god. This was *not* what I was expecting from the dev(s) of ‘How Fish Is Made’ but I am pleasantly - or, well, more horrified but in a positive way? Idk if that makes sense - surprised. I may not be able to 100% understand all the in-depth layers this game contains (thank you commenters with your magnificent brains for explaining things, y’all are amazing) but I can appreciate the effort, the thought and the brilliance it took to put this game together. It might be one of my favourites now, both as a game in general and on this channel
Smii7y, I genuine thank you for playing this game. I loved getting to watch you play through it, and I love the emotion you brought to it. And it was awesome to hear your thoughts on it afterwards! I'm glad you took the time to really think through the game. It was truly a journey.
Dude (round of applause)… I really enjoyed this play through. Do more of this. I know it’s tough getting into character, but you did great man. Trippy game… Made us all think I’m sure. You’re a funny dude that is adaptive to the game. It worked. Just enjoyed it man. Thanks
I for one loved it. this longform content of yours reminds me of the olden days of letsplays bringing along viewers for the whole experience of the game. if 'weird' / spooky was the vibe you were going for on this channel, i'm really glad you came around to picking up mouthwash. it seemed like an appropriate choice.
Very much appreciate the thoughts you give at the end, feels like I get to listen to the more serious side of your playthroughs. Loved to hear your perspective on this, really interesting viewpoint.
I love how Mouthwashing is a double entendres in the title. The main character is sanitizing the truth that he tells the crew. And sanitizes the narrative he tells himself. And there’s also a lot of bottles of mouthwash.
I had to come back to comment on this I genuinely enjoyed watching how this game played out, it's incredibly creative. It's unnerving and interesting. It did not feel like a 2 hour+ video I love how, as a player, you start off assuming you're the good guy. but as you play the game, it plays against your good nature. In turn you kinda question yourself. As the game progresses, it's this descent into insanity. It's very cleverly done too. It's the conflicting voices in your brain working against each other played out in a game. Ultimately it's the bad voices that took control (this is the best way I can describe it) Jimmy is a monster imo. Not just the crash. Thinking about Anya's pregnancy, the interactions between them two weren't a "couple" type. If they were in a relationship, it was an abusive one. If they weren't, Anya was raped by Jimmy. Anya was the only female on the ship. Unfortunately that's not hard to believe that that would happen. It explains Anya's suicide. I'm going to assume she felt most safe with Curly and Swansea, hence why she confided in them. Anya decided to end it next to Curly and open the draw where the gun was kept, I'm still thinking about that one. Swansea I didn't like at the start. However realising that he's speaking to Jimmy, I like Swansea more now. In his own way he was looking out for Anya and Die. Swansea mentioned Anya spoke to him, I'm going to assume she told him about the pregnancy. Maybe Swansea was trying to keep the cryo pod for Anya. Alternatively, possibly for Die as he was a young kid and had worked close to him. I don't blame Swansea for ending Die's life, he looked like a right state, it was probably best not to let him suffer. And I think Swansea knew that not all of them were going to make it out of there. Swansea gives veteran dad vibes. Die was just a good kid. Jimmy really manipulated Die at the end. I haven't thought too much about his character, tbh I might watch this video again. The interactions between Jimmy and Curly I need to rewatch too. My brain is going too fast to form words lol I hope the people that created this game are very proud, it's very well done. I've spent half the day thinking about it 😅 I could write so much more
"My voice is a little horse"
What a fitting choice of words.
Also he's right about 5:27, he sounds cool af 😂
guys I think he might be the equestrian animal
1:47:53 Also, he have been calling Daisuke 'Die' the entire time.
Talk about foreshadowing.
@@InnocentC0 2 for 2 on a poor choice of words. That's crazy.
I FUCKING GIGGLIED WHEN I HEARD HIM SAY IT
Some trivia:
- Daisuke in Japanese means _Big Helper_
- Swans(sea) are very protective with their offspring even adopt other orphan cygnets, but will kill them if they are not able to leave the nest aka not fit to survive the world
- Horse usually symbolize "the impetuosity of desire" or sexual energy without constraint, which Jimmy seems to like it so much
interesting
i see
ooh
The swansea part is actually super interesting. I wonder if the devs named him before or after writing the story? Like, was he inspired by swans, or did he remind them of swans?
Oh thank you! that's so interesting
SPOILER warning:
- Curly laughs when Jimmy takes the gun because before the crash, he believed that Jimmy was a good guy and friend, despite s*xually assaulting Anya.
- Anya was nauseous, giving Curly the painkillers because the act of forcing medicine down his throat reminded her of Jimmy forcing himself on Anya
- The ultrasound part was him showing regret for the baby he created.
At this point, you can guess why she asked that.
damn..
I read this about halfway through the video and it changed the perspective immediately. Everything made more sense to that point and I'm even catching on to Jimmy being manipulative to the crew. Still not getting the point of the horse as of yet. At just before Jimmy is about to "knock out" swansea

Definitely one of the top games of the year!
@@errorx_x1063makes me wonder, if smiii7y would play Spec Ops: The Line
I feel like they could've done more with Jimmy, they don't really tell much about him what exactly he did but at the same time it makes sense because he kept running away from responsibilities. I wished we knew more about his relationship with curly because the lengths he went thru to get him a job as a co pilot and everything
This, and what Smii7y said, reminds me of _Spec Ops: The Line_ [spoilers below for a game you can't buy anymore]:
Spec Ops does a similar framing of perspective with Walker, using the distinction of The Player Character (as opposed to NPC) to grant Walker almost a moral free pass despite committing war crimes and other atrocities.
So true.

It's a fucked up incarnate of both The Pony Express as a company and Jimmy's child in his own mind, hence the babies cries emanating from the Polle-worm during the vent chase and the "Or what should I call you? Old Man?" line from the Polle statue while Jimmy is having a breakdown during the last part of the game.
Edit: further evidence is at the very beginning of the game when you think you're playing as Curly crashing the ship but you're actually Jimmy crashing it, the mangled Polle appearing in front of you is Jimmy thinking about the company going under and his unwanted child as he sits there contemplating what he's just done.
also, I once again, ask you to play Inscryption.
Another amazing game with engaging gameplay and an awesome story.
Another comment pointed out that they are also both a symbol of impending doom or a ticking clock for him.
Also, before Swansea's execution, he was condemning Jimmy for his cowardice and selfishness in his last moments, and everything that you saw that was "unreal" was his hallucinations, but he ultimately led Curly into a cryogenic pod because this was his attempt to "fix the situation."
when was it implied that jimmy raped anya? My brain is melted from the game itself so any help would appreciated

2:18:03 Ultrasound => Checking the Womb => See a Horse
Earlier on his Psych Eval, Jimmy wrote "attracted to cartoon horses"
He doesn't see Anya as a Human Being, he sees her as a Horse, hence the 'Horse inside of a Womb" Metaphor
You're basically looking at your child @ 2:18:03
Messed UP)

Honestly Smitty is one of the few youtubers I trust to be media literate enough to understand this game which makes me really happy that he added that segment at the end of the vid.
Sounds like he did with how he's talking about it in the end of the video
jimmy? you mean jingle balls?
You wasted your time typing this comment when he’s not gonna see it 🤦
Can you imagine this from Curly’s POV. (Spoiler warning if you haven’t finished the video)
Your best friend SA’s a member of your crew, and when you ask him about it, he crashes the entire ship. Insanity.
One can only imagine the millions of thoughts circulating through Curly's head
One thing though is that Curly knew Anya was SA-ed before she became pregnant then she told him about that too after telling Jimmy he was the father. When he asked who's the father, Anya said he knew. (Watching the game in chronological order really made everything make sense.)
The thing is though, he wanted to prioritise the crew as a whole and was stretched thin trying to keep the crew together.
Probably a lot of people jumped on this kind of comment, but I’ll give my two cents on this game as well:
This is genuinely such a fascinating game.
I love it for the same reason. Wish he keeps posting on both genres consistently, tho ofc burnout's more important
But especially for this game thanks for that :)
Edit: I will say though, Curly is also at fault.
But man this game, its just so well made.

to add recommendations, watch kubz scouts if ur open! he also puts his thoughts in at the end and him being a father makes his comprehension so much more important to me personally x]
something about Smitty as a creator and his personality makes him playing these kinds of games and stuff like the Beginner's Guide so insanely enjoyable, and i can't wait for him to find more.
not to mention I've already watched a playthrough of this, but i couldn't help to watch it again anyway. (it's actually quite enjoyable knowing what happens as i can understand precisely what's beyond each of the actions now, and it all makes even more sense)
This is his like 5th channel his main has like 7 million subs its just "Smii7y" and "Smii7yplus" and "Smii7yminus" bro
im really glad you fully mentioned and atleast slightly understood what happened to anya, a lot of content creators dont really touch on it, so thank u :D loved the playthrough
9:13 “you were GODdamn ᵇᵒʳⁿ fully corked”
Laughed when he said that
Loved the voice crack
Anya starts sleeping outside of the sleeping quarters, in the common area where there’s a motion activated statue of Polle which could tell her if Jimmy was trying to approach her at night, and at some point Jimmy broke it between Anya dying and Swansea dying
His complex only affects him enough to make him wary of other men (Swansea) and the faceless company and the faceless baby that he’s responsible for, and notice how in each event scene he’s only being chased when the antagonist is silent?
@ Totally! I agree with every point here, and seeing the parallels with Polle and Anya laid out like that make it even more sad
1:05:40 “Curly you’re not the cake, get off the table” 😂😂😂
Insane foreshadowing
Currently yelling and screeching and jumping around of excitement... Can't wait to see Smitty traumatized part 1mil.
SAAAAME, how's it going? (I actually jumped and screeched and scared the hell out of my dog when I saw this)
@i_am_da_strange1568 That's hilarious because I scared my brother's daughter.. poor thing was constipated and got scared too 🌚
The really hard thing about this game is that it convinces you from the start that Curly is the villain and Jimmy is the good guy.
Also just a little spooky
(If Smitty plays it I’ll buy merch 🙂)
i watched manlybadasshero play it aaaages ago but my attention span couldnt pay attention (i dont even remember if i made it past the first video part). i love gut wrenching games and feeling miserable, thank you for convincing me to get back to it ahaha
@@radlegowaffleI actually found manlybadasshero a couple months ago through his signalis video lmao, another misery connoisseur 🤝
@@radlegowaffleI wasn’t able to finish Manly’s playthroughs but for some reason Smitty’s was able to keep my attention.
im really glad you gave some perspective at the end, i was waiting for you to make connections about things (specifically the anya stuff) and knowing you took time to process things really makes glad. I told myself i would finally watch a playthrough of this game if you played it and im glad you went about this pretty respectfully.
no way he accidentally foreshadowed the word horse on this game, smii7y predictions moment??? 1:00
Fucking so much foreshadowing

"That's gold right?"
Yes Smii7y, the orbital body is 21 gold away from your ship
Mouthwashing, a game I never knew I needed ngl.
For context (spoilers)
Jimmy SA’d Anya and got her pregnant, but when he found out he got her pregnant he decided he didn’t want to deal with it and crashed the ship instead. Swansea was trying to protect Anya, and (in my opinion) was saving the cryo pod for her (could’ve been for Daisuke though). In the end he decided to “take responsibility” by saving Curly and taking the easy way out. All around a fantastically written game.
58:42 I’m probably wrong but I believe Swansea was telling Anya here that he’d like to save the cryo pod for daisuke
Out of all of them Daisuke seems to have the most promising life if he was saved after being put in the cryo pod
It was for daisuke. That’s what they where talking about. They also spoke about her assault
pod was def for daisuke thats why Anya said “…if it has to be this way” in that conversation she was having with swansea before jimbothy interrupted.
59:59 Smitty sounds so gentle yet slightly deranged throughout this little segment it's so amusing
I love how he played this. I love how "serious" this is compared to other videos. Honestly, this was my favorite video of yours. Thank you.
Right? We're so used to him being the funny guy, it's refreshing to see another side.

Unfortunate that someone had to fill in for Smitty, he would've loved this game :(

What do you mean? Pls explain???
@@anandmohansingh1972 at the beginning of the video smii7y says it’s not himself playing because of his rough voice 🤣
“I have to believe that our worst moments don’t make us monsters, Jim.”. Such an important line once you know what Jimmy did
i love this "non"-smitty guy, truly life changing tbh
I really enjoyed having the introspective at the end because yeah this game DEFINITELY deserves it. Also yeah I think it'd be cool to see more games like this on the channel!
May I just say, not only do I love to hear Smii7ys take on this game, which is very serious and respectful, I also love the roleplaying that he did!
Despite him saying he doesn't do voice acting or messing up some lines, it was still very good overal! He really got into it which makes this playthrough all the more cool and I just loved how well he roleplayed and acted in it! Love when he does that, his acting is so underrated
Like bro: ITS SO GOOD - 1:46:30

I would love to see you handle yourself through them and i'm sure others will love to as well ;)
oh, but don't play the 2nd game "mile 0" that one isn't as good and the story wont make much sense without playing the original game.
The thing I love about Smii7y playing walkthroughs is that he always lets the credits roll and credits the developers. That’s huge respect from me, Smii7y. Keep doing what you’re doing.
Smitty plays is by far my favorite smitty channel
“IM NOT A GOOD VOICE ACTOR OK?!?”
*Proceeds to voice act the fuck out of every line of dialogue*
Hey smii7y I want to thank you because I’m at the lowest I’ve been in my mental health for a while and I want to thank you for making the only videos that have made me laugh in a long time. So truly thank you and keep up the good work.❤❤❤

Still Wakes The Deep is a long game like this but the graphics are absolutely gorgeous, there's amazing voice acting, and great storytelling. It doesn’t take place in space, instead its set on an oil rig in the north sea. If you could try it out, that would be awesome.
1:46:15 he sounded so genuinely upset
Fr he actually liked daisuke
I wanna see more deep games from you, man.
The insight from you after the fact is a rare thing from a long-play channel like this.
YESSSSS I love this game!!! I am so glad you are playing this! I have been begging some of my friends to watch someone play it. I am gonna watch this then send it to them. Sorry for my excitement y'all, I just whisper yelled "Oooohhhh!! YESSSSS!!!"
Edit- I have just been sitting and typing- I am SO excited to watch him play this traumatic asf game. This honestly messed me up for a good day or 2- worth it. I am so excited that i can't watch it cause I don't want it to be over, you know? Im rambling, let me watch this and bake and hang with my dog
Edit(post watch) - I liked that he took the time to process and talk about the themes in this game.

HIS ACTING IS SO UNDERRATED I LIVE FOR IT
YEAHHHH!!!!!
edit: just finished watching, and for one, i've never heard this man be more devastated through my (albeit short) time following his channels. second, AU refers to Astronomical Units when referring to distance in space, specifically within our solar system, beyond that distance is light years. third, the themes of this game, once you get deeper and deeper into its symbolism is so dark and focuses on so many heavy topics, i love it and I absolutely adored watching this!
Really enjoying the longform content here. You've been giving me "the next markiplier" vibes with your growth lately!
LET'S GOOOOOO HE'S PLAYING IT!!!!!!
Really do appreciate your ending summary. it a game that requires a lot of after thought to process the metaphors and what actually just happened. Don't need it for every game but it was well deserved for this one and a great wrap up to the video. Love this new channel Smii7ty, Keep it up!
Dude, you have to play Inscryption! You'll love it, definitely a “not what it seems” game.
the irony of Smii7y saying "we'll fix it" at 2:15:18 ....
Peak SMii7Y content
I think Jimmy’s insistence on Curly living is him still acting out his “revenge” or anger or whatever you’d wanna call it. He talked about Curly being remembered as a failed captain after finding out they were being laid off. I think the reason he was so adamant about Curly living when everyone else was saying to let him go, is so that Curly will survive to witness himself be remembered as a failed captain and have his dreams of finding something new taken away from him
I knew this was coming after he played the "How fish is made" expansion. Which was a true shameless plug but I appreciate it.
10 minutes in and corked voice Smii7y is exactly the vibe I needed for this game. Horse nightmares here I come
I love this channel, its such a sharp departure from the main channels, and I love that! It's really nice to get to hear you experience and talk about your thoughts on games, hearing your passion for gaming is so awesome
Smii7y’s voice acting is actually supreme. I’ve been listening to Swansea’s speech for the 4th time now and its peak everytime

dude, Smiity's says hes not a great voice actor but he did amazing with this!!
Smii7y, AU means astronomical units. Which is the amount of space between the earth and the sun.
Ya not good
After watching many playthroughs of Mouthwash, I think Smii7y had one of if not the best voiceovers for each character.

Best game yet on this channel
Very much appreciate the thoughts you give at the end, feels like I get to listen to the more serious side of your playthroughs. Loved to hear your perspective on this, really interesting viewpoint.
I luv mouthwash
1:40:23 “ahh jimmys a piece of shit!!!” The mouthwashing experience baby
Hands down best smii7y video I've seen so far
I love how you give time and thought to these kinds of games! The discussion is half the fun
you should definitely play inscryption. it's a total masterpiece
I love how Mouthwashing is a double entendres in the title. The main character is sanitizing the truth that he tells the crew. And sanitizes the narrative he tells himself. And there’s also a lot of bottles of mouthwash.
Ahhh yes, always happy when SMii7y drops a new video
I had to come back to comment on this
I genuinely enjoyed watching how this game played out, it's incredibly creative.
It's unnerving and interesting. It did not feel like a 2 hour+ video
I love how, as a player, you start off assuming you're the good guy. but as you play the game, it plays against your good nature. In turn you kinda question yourself.
As the game progresses, it's this descent into insanity. It's very cleverly done too. It's the conflicting voices in your brain working against each other played out in a game. Ultimately it's the bad voices that took control (this is the best way I can describe it)
Jimmy is a monster imo.
My brain is going too fast to form words lol
I hope the people that created this game are very proud, it's very well done. I've spent half the day thinking about it 😅 I could write so much more
can’t wait for this 2.5 hour tutorial on how to mouthwash!
Honestly, 10/10 voice acting Mr Smitty
