I have 2 ancestors who served in the 27th Me. Joshua C Spencer, Enlisted in Co B on September 10th 1862 and was mustered out on July 17th 1863 in Portland Maine. and Joseph T Spencer, also of South Berwick Maine. Enlisted on September 10th 1862 Co. B left service on July 17th 1863 .
They were offered medals to stay, but they received the medals much later after the soldiers had returned home. The medals were ultimately rescinded as the eligibility requirements for receiving the MOH had changed.

Were they offered medals to stay? Or were they awarded MOH's for staying?
