Colonel Clark Edwards' Haunting Letter: Reflections After the Battle of Antietam
In the aftermath of the Battle of Antietam, Colonel Clark Edwards of the 5th Maine Infantry penned a moving letter that captures the immense loss and sorrow felt by soldiers and their families. In this letter, Edwards reflects on the transformed landscape, now a national graveyard with makeshift markers for the fallen. He shares vivid images of grieving loved ones-mothers, sisters, and widows-searching for their lost family members among the dead. Join us as we explore the personal and heartbreaking side of one of the bloodiest days in American history. Special thanks to the Nicholas P. Picerno Collection. #Antietam #CivilWar #History

Remember the ghost of paul revere. Sadly, due to COVID restrictions in new England where they were popular, they couldnt financially continue. I got to see them three times during the pandemic. There concert had 10,000 people in portland, maone. "And then appeared our lion, he was roaring bayonets And we charged on down the mountain with what forces we had left 'Cause we're as steadfast as Katahdin, we're as hard as winter's rain Go straight to hell with your rebel yell, we are the boys of Maine!"

Went to Petersburg battlefield on June 17th. I saw their monument and never knew their story and realized the 160th anniversary was the next day. So I went back and laid some flowers at 4:30PM when their assault began that day. No one else was there but hopefully we can spread their story so their sacrifice will never be forgotten.

Yet he was also a so-so to bad commander with battles like Chancellorsville and Gettysburg being the low points. Decent Bridge Commander, bad Corps Commander and didn't really have an impact as an Army Commander.

The 1st Maine Heavy Artillery was originally assigned to the defense of Washington D.C., but was then assigned to the Overland Campaign to meet Grant’s orders for fresh troops due to the heavy casualties the Union Army suffered. Many other Heavy Artillery Regiments defending D.C. at the time moved to the front in the same manner.

Thanks for your comment. As they say: "If the Civil War didn't kill you, the food might." The American Civil War went from 1861-1865. Germs weren’t discovered to be the cause of disease until Joseph Lister’s Germ Theory was published in 1867, thusly the concept of sterilization didn’t exist as germs were not known to exist. They had realized clean was good, but didn’t really understand how “clean” is not sterile. Germ Theory wasn’t immediately accepted. It was helped along by USCW Surgeons who agreed from their own observations, this (germs) was. The missing piece of the puzzle. (Thanks to Scott with @3rd Maine for this information)
