How about this. Take a small piece of thick paper. Roll it into a cone and glue it. Hold the stone woth the wax thingy, and stick it down the cone, where you have made a few lines, and notice whitch one, it fits. Use that as a template to cut your metal, and make the come a bit longer than needed, and file it down to fit 100%. NOT to say anything about this skilled methode, just for those who aren't as mathy aso. As long as we reach a perfect result, the task is solved.

I do appreciate the effort you went to to create the video. I also like your template plan as a teaching tool to explain the concept. That will be useful for people getting started. Beyond that, after many years experience doing this myself, I think you might have overcomplicated the rest of the process . I did see the proper tool for finishing those collets on your screen. But then you didn't use it? When you did your calculations you subtracted the thickness of your metal. You might try adding the thickness of your metal instead to get a perfect fit for your stone.
Suggest making a template unit about 10% heavier and taller (different sizes) then rubber mold for wax model. You will loose apprx 3% wax shrinkage in cooling. Then if you do castings add a few models (different sizes) to sprue to build stock settings availability. Easier and faster to refinish and fit when variety available. PS, no solder line. 😉 Excellent from scratch instruction which is essential basic knowledge.👍
Well yes, it works, but it takes perhaps 20 minutes and some skill. If you use a bezel block it takes 2 minutes and there is no trouble. I think you can't just do without it, unless you have plenty of time on your hands.

Many years ago I was sent to a Father and Sons home to have an Opal re cut I was told it was a black Australian Opal when I had purchased it it was in a ring with 6 Diamonds three on either side I would rub the top of the stone (the Opal) and it seemed to be out of round however the stone was oval but the top was not dome to the touch anyway this is how I met or sent to this stone cutter (John) who lived in Tampa Fl. I was warned that when I go there they had Cats and the smell was unbearable.So I was taken through several doors (With alarms)before reaching this rather large area and I was told not to touch anything in that room (to me they looked like oversized pottery wheels and John had explained there was alot of Diamond dust all over and that's what he used to cut& polish the stones with.I watched the man work and I was so impressed by his work how beautiful he had made that stone look. Well I thanked him with excitement & I asked him what do I owe you & John said son I just put a $500. cut & polish on your stone but $50. will do.So I than I asked him what is a stone like that worth ? So he had a scale on the table where him & his son were sitting & weight it just at 10ct.(well out came the calculator) that's when he said to me there wasn't but .02 lost in the job(stone cutter's talk)he told his son & myself who were there with him so he & his calculator said to his son & I your looking at wholesale prices about $900. A carrot now that's triple Key .Right before I was getting ready to leave John had told me that he had done work for Tiffany's and there was one stone in particular he cut for them was this Ruby,well that stuck in my head for all this time. That was back in 1986.Thats the reason I asked if you had done work for Tiffany's because your work is beyond words.Thank you for giving me the opportunity to tell you that story.

Really struggling to understand why you subtracted the thickness of the sheet from the circumference of the stone. Surely you should be adding the thickness as otherwise the physical hole for the stone in your collet will be too small, or are you just counting fixing this with the collet block and trial and error. Mathematically it doesn’t make sense to me unless you know that you are going to stretch it by a given amount in the shaping process, and if so, is that always the width? I’m confused!
Since the 21.4 is the circumference of the stone, that is actually the measurement of the arc, not the point to point straight line measurement. He has to remove some of the circumference to account for the longer length of the arc.
try using the cc function. turn it on and then go to settings and select auto translate in the language required. that's how I can understand Russian to English videos

Ohhh that would look good acid washed . The lines would be black after a dip in acid and a sanding

How do you decide what's the height of the bezel? For example, I want to file prongs from the cone itself.
The height should be at least the same measurement as the stone diameter

Jennavieve Harley making it slightly smaller is preferred as the collet will stretch out when you do the final forming
