  • This is day 3 of owning a Volkswagen ID.3 1st, we drive back from Tavira in the Algarve to our home near Lisbon. We decide to take the slower route along national roads.
    We test the VW ID.3 1st on national roads. We test out ECO mode in the VWID3.

    Nice video and nice to see that road again. Back in the 90s drove it many times when working in Lisboa and living in Faro

    Hello Marcus,
    Enjoy seeing your enthusiasm as you gain "range confidence." You will quickly adapt your forward thinking as time passes in how your vehicle will perform. When you are ready (you will know this), you will start to calculate in your head, the cars efficiency: coupled to the terrain (elevation) you plan to travel. It is all math & it being in metric, it is all based on "10's."
    My impression is you are using the charger that came with the car for your home charging? Hence the 14hr charge time to 80%. That time will be 1/2 to 1/3 with a EVSE unit installation at your home (if possible).
    Keep up the efforts! You are doing great & you have a very nice family. Sorry for your wife & her displeasure with the seats.
    Be safe,
    Mark from Vermont

      I only have the 2kw home charger currently. VW are going to give me a NRGkick cable soon, so I will get 7kw at home. An electrician has already upgraded my wiring to the garage, so I just need to plug the NRGkick cable into the dedicated socket.
      You are correct about 10s, currently I am being conservative and use this rule in my head. At motorway speed every 10% of battery is 25kms, at national road speed every 10% of battery is 40kms.
      I have solved the issue with my wife's seat which you can see in my latest video. She is now comfortable.
      Thank you for watching from Vermont :-)

      That's the ticket! Go get em sparky! ;-)
      We went about a month before I got our Level 2 (Flo 7,2kW) installed & limped by with the Level 1 that came with our e-Golf. It is still in the car as backup/emergency, however not needed for over a year at this point. Made all the difference in the world to have a EVSE at my home, & ended up future-proofing my family get-away cottage with its own 6.3kW ClipperCreek EVSE last spring.
      So at this point, I am scrapping my ICE SUV for an ID4 & just standing by for a manufacturer to produce a pickup truck EV for my farm. Tractors can run on Rapeseed Oil or Biofuel. Ready to celebrate the day the world stops using dinosaur-juice. Hopeful in my children's lifetime, my parents generation need just exit government & get out of my way.

    Nice video Marcus. Great efficiency on the car as well! In Finland it is getting rather cold, hard to reach below 18 kW/100 km numbers. But I also love the car, very smooth ride! I've also grown to like the massage seats 😃

    Thanks, Marcus! ID.3 seems to be a real winner.
    Portugal looks amazing especially as its -3C where I live!

      The ID.3 is amazing. As my wife is in the car we tend to listen to chick lit, I would probably find astrophysics more interesting. However I must admit I did enjoy the shopaholic series. To make you feel better soon in Portugal we will have lots of rain, like today, while you will be enjoying crisp white snow 👍

    Good video, and by the way, Marcus, you are the most efficient driver I´v ever seen - 15kw/h? is amazing! And thanks for choosing the public road instead of the motorway. I always drive through the motorway to Algarve (only charging the ID3 in Alcácer), but after this video, I will change for the public road (and with a full charge I won't need to recharge).

    • @marcusevjourney566
      @marcusevjourney566  3 года назад

      Hello Nuno, the best route is to use the motorway up to Grandola and then take the national road. When you get to the Algarve take the A22 motorway to Tavira. You will not need to stop to recharge but the route takes longer than the motorway, but it is more fun :-).

    58kWh usable battery capacity divided by 15.5 kWh/100 km gives a range of 374km (or 234 miles). Oh to live in sunny Portugal!

    Hey Marcus just bought an ID3 in the Algarve. Should pick it up next week. I have obtained the Moii card after your video so thanks for that information. I am disappointed at the lack of incentives in Portugal for going for an EV. Did you get a Via Verde device for your ID3 and do you still pay road tolls?

    • @marcusevjourney566
      @marcusevjourney566  3 года назад

      The Mobi app is great 👍 In Portugal ISV is 0€ when you purchase the EV so that gives you a big saving over an ICE vehicle. IUC is 0€ for EVs currently.
      Yes, I have Via Verde and the toll prices are the same. If you want to travel on the A22 you will have to get Via Verde.
      In Lisbon parking is free for EVs you need to apply for a disc. If you get a ViaCard I think EVs get a 20% discount on Vasco da Gama bridge and 80% discount on 25 Abril bridge. There may be other local incentives that I do not know about.
      If you buy an EV you can apply for a 3000€ grant but it is over subscribed and has runout this year I believe.
      You will love your ID.3 it is fantastic.

    as long as the figure is bigger than that on the map we have plenty of .... is not that right ... cause bigger by 1 kilometer would make you think again.
    But I can assure that you can get beyond 0km at least with e-golf, a lot further but at decreasing speed cause at 0% your power available will be about 10 % or so and then decreasing . I had to go close to 30 km over the 0 limit due to charger failure and no fast charger in the vicinity ... too close to home. And it was a good possibilty to check "what if" cause we had time and a spare car with tow hook and the right trailer that day.
    Why shouldn't the e-golf get any further if it shows 10% of power / torque available (not 10% SOC) and therefore we did it.
    But the speed is limited to 80 and then 70 and going even a slower but "full of power" as it still climbs hills or steep ways cause at the end I had to gain 80 m hill which is not much for most people until you put those people on a bike and show them the steep slope they have to climb ... to recognice what a 80 m hill means for a car of 2 tons with passengers.
    I was still able to "climb" the final hill at 50 km/h without loosing speed even though I had been in the middle of turtle mode for a pretty long while. Inside city no issue at all cause 50 is city limit.
    And it does not harm the battery cause we usually do drive from 90% to 10% and charge up to 80% except we know we have to depart for a longer trip cause then it will be fully charged. And we do not fast charge , just 2 kW only from the Solar panel or home battery into the car. All long trips are the job for a Mercedes Diesel due to time loss and comfort cause a Mercedes offers a lot more comfort on long distances and is as quiet as an EV ... Battery degredation is not existing after 10.000 km and we hope that will stay that way until we will get an ID 3 pure - one fine day.
    great video, damn beautifull countryside and of cause summer weather compared to Germany right now.

    • @marcusevjourney566
      @marcusevjourney566  3 года назад

      :-). To play it safe I think the range has to be 50km more on the GOM then to the destination.
      I am not charging my car more than 80% and I am trying to keep it above 20%, that is why I was not happy to arrive here with only 14%.
      It will be a fine day when you get your ID.3, the car is fantastic.
      Germany also has beautiful countryside; the Portuguese countryside is beautiful and different.
