For some reason, the Chrono Trigger cartridge I had up on my shelf got way overexposed to the point I couldn't fix it in post.

Chrono Trigger was the first RPG that I really got into. Went over to my best friends house as a kid when he was playing it. The art style and music just wasn't anything else I had seen. I had mostly just played Metroid, Mario, and Genesis platformers at the time. Chrono Trigger blew me away, I needed to play it. So I spent a few days at my buddy's house and that's pretty much all I did. I got my own copy when I was around 21. The last picture I took of my dad before he passed away was him playing it. The game will always have a place in my heart.

Chrono Trigger was the first RPG I played. I was in middle school and was assigned homework telling what I did that day. So I named my character "I" and wrote the story in first person as if it was me, then added the twist at the end that it was a game. I had to read my assignment aloud in class and had to explain to my teacher that all I did was play the game, so I wrote about it. That moment started my love for writing fiction.

When I first started collecting chrono trigger was the game I wanted to have the most. I think I was about 2 years into collecting before I found a copy I played it begining to end over the course of a weekend and was genuinely blown away how much chrono felt like it could have come out today. It felt like it hadn't aged a day to me and as someone who doesnt usually like JRPG's I was also equally blown away by my inability to put it down. Definitely a personal favorite of mine id never get rid of my boxed copy.

Strangely enough I liked Chrono most of all. Even though he didn't speak his actions spoke volumes. The way he jumps into action to save those in peril like when he went after Marle after she vanished in the telepod or threw himself in between Sharla and Lavos. One instance it's to save a stranger and the other to save the life of our would be antagonist's sister! There are many other examples that speak to his character that I'm not gonna get into here, it's too much. I also think it's awesome that you can complete the game without him which puts a tragic spin on his kind and heroic nature. An interesting theme is how heros die sometimes, we see it again in Frog's story with Cyrus. This was one theme Chrono Trigger hit on that really stuck with me since I was a kid, I think I played it for the first time when I was 12. Love this game.

The two moments in the game I really liked were running around in The Millennial Fair with Marle and the campfire scene with everyone, as well. I always loved those moments in old JRPGs where they'd have festivals for you to explore, as well as any campfire scenes where the entire cast would spend a night together during your adventure and contemplate things that have transpired in the story. Such a minor and niche thing to enjoy, but I've always really liked them.

I played Chrono Trigger for the first time a few months ago too, on PS1. Getting it on PS1 is super affordable compared to the American SNES version, and with fast disk speed on a PS2 the loading times aren't that unbearable. To quote a certain Scott: “I’m not an RPG guy”. So I never had a huge interest in trying Chrono Trigger. Especially watching the price of the dang thing climb higher by the day. That said, not long ago I found a VERY reasonably priced cib copy of the DS version so I couldn’t help myself and picked it up. Looking forward to eventually playing it one day despite my aversion to most RPG’s. I mean, I don’t want to be in gamer jail forever! It has a dedicated spot on the backlog for the time being 😅

Right now I just started Chrono Trigger (I have the PS1 version of the game) and I keep getting mixed up on what button does what and I am on the second disc of Parasite Eve which is like if Final Fantasy and Resident evil had a baby has some of the good old body horror

I feel like both halves of the game compliment each other. I was 13 years old when I 'Rented' this game from blockbuster. Seriously, this game was hard to find when it was new and I wanted it bad. My dad (RIP) was an outside the box thinker and when worse came to worse, he figured he'd rent the game, say he lost it and pay the fee. He used to do that with hard to find movies too. Remember, there wasn't much to the internet back in 1995.
I digress. Anyway, going back to my recollection as a kid playing this game. I remember being so enthralled in the first half. Starting with the Millennial fair, then going back to 600 AD and being put on trial. That courtroom was stunning and I was blown away seeing the SNES put out those graphics. Then we get to fight a steampunk dragon and go to 2300 AD in a post apocalyptic world and learning about Lavos. It was a trip indeed. Not to mention that the graphical presentation was really the best the SNES had to offer.
because we learn about Lavos through time travel. What is cool about the 2nd half is simple. You have a fucking time machine and you can go where/whenever you want. And this is where exploration come in. And this is the icing on delicious cake. Like many other classic Squaresoft rpgs of this time. This is where the player gets to explore the side lore and other various stories hidden in the game. And that is what makes these games more than the sum of their parts and you need both elements from the first and second half of this game to make it what the masterpiece that it is.
That said, I think it is a travesty that we've had no true follow up to this game since.

I played through a friends copy of Final Fantasy, I played through a friends copy of Final Fantasy II, I rented and played through Secret of Mana. At this point I was convinced Square couldn’t make a game I wouldn’t love. The first Square game I bought off the shelf was Final Fantasy III and it was everything I hoped it to be.
Chrono Trigger I bought off the shelf with nothing other than “Square doesn’t make bad games”. I knew nothing about it other than it was an RPG.
It was such a beautiful game. I loved everything about it and it was just a masterpiece to me, particularly how well the music matches the emotions of the narrative.
I loved that their were branching storyline paths and multiple endings.
I’m happy to have reclaimed this one. I had my childhood copy that got sold with the rest of my games to pay for a wedding, but years later bought someone else’s childhood copy for a fair price. I don’t think I would buy it now seeing how expensive it’s gotten. Happy to have it, and all the other SNES Square and ENIX games in my collection with all the goodies.

Man, I couldn’t click fast enough on this video!! This game is fantastic!!! I can see why you like Frog and Robo so much. To me, most of the characters are about equal in my book, each with their own unique personalities and time frames. On the Nintendo DS there is a wonderful feature called the Music Box; truly one of the best OSTs ever! Also, on the DS and the PlayStation, that opening video is phenomenal. Most memorable parts for me: the Millennial Fair and meeting Marle, saving Chrono from certain death, The Kingdom of Zeal(love the music🎶 ), the trial, choosing between a really strong weapon and powerful armor, that campfire scene, and fighting Magus(that battle along with the music was so epic!!)

Not necessarily true about no skill required. Decision-making and item management are key (and positioning in SRPGs). Of course, in some RPGs, you can grind and level up to overpower your enemies, but it's all in how you decide to play those games.

    I love Chrono Trigger.
I never expirienced the game in the 90s but there was a TV show I was watching in the mid 2000s in which they reviewed video games and sometimes they would talk about old games. When they mentioned Chrono Trigger I was on board but neither the SNES nor the PS1 version had come out it europe.... I didn't know anything about emulation so I had to give up quickly. When later it was announced that the game would be ported to the Nintendo DS and released in europe I was beyond hyped. I couldn't stop talking about how much I wanted to play this game. A buddy of mine who is not a fan of RPGs unless they are Pokemon based got interested just like me so when the game finally came out I played it to shreds. The closest thing to a "negative expirience" I had with Chrono Trigger was the release on the Wii virtual console service I think it was 6 months after the DS release. But that was not that big of a deal since I had enjoyed the game so much. My favorite character is Robo.

I got Chrono Trigger for Christmas way back in 1995. My friend had gone to Japan the previous summer and game back with a Japanese copy and he was stumbling through it. It looked interesting, and when I saw it was released in the US, I asked for it. I had the Player's Guide so in New Game+ I went through getting things I missed and trying to get all the endings (which I finally did a few years back).
Robo and Frog are my favorites as well. I love both their themes. After playing the game, I thought I was now a fan of JRPGs, but after a playing a few more, I realized I just liked Chrono Trigger. (This was back in the 90s. There are a few more JPRGs I like now).

Now that I’m an adult I have a good amount of the must have SNES RPGs. As for Chrono Trigger, I think it is awesome and should have been more popular than it was. They should remaster it on switch.

Chrono Trigger is my favorite game of all time, I don't collect snes or have currently an snes. But one year ago, in the last christmas I gifted myself a copy of it for the Nintendo DS and it was glorious to replay it as always.
There is so much to say about chrono trigger, but one thing that as a child turly admired about these characters is that I thought they were the most heroic I've ever seen. They are risking their lives, trying to save the world from ending, despite the fact that the world is ending one thousand years after their time, they have no stakes in the matter, appart from Robo. In that sense crono is kind of a Jesus christ figure, even dying and coming back.
I really liked that as a kid, they are not saving their friends and family, they are saving people that they will never meet. They are not making the future better for them, but simply they want to make the future better for the people that will come. We surely need some of that given our situation.

Nice timing. I have been playing through it for the first time the last few days and have been really enjoying it. For an RPG of that time it seems faster paced and even when I do have to do some grinding it didn't feel like it took long. Hopefully the other RPGs on the SNES hold up as well because this set the bar high.

I picked this up way back in 1996 just after playing Mario RPG & finding out that the art was done by Akira Toriyama (DBZ), which put me into a 10 year old hype induced frenzy. I've played it numerous times over the years & both Chrono Trigger & Mario RPG stand out as best in class as far as I'm concerned for games in general. As for thoughts on what you covered.
    1. I love time travel because of this game now & unfortunately everything else falls short due to how well CT did it.
    2. FROG is the heart & soul of the game & is still my favorite game character to this day. Magus is a very close second.
    3. I personally do prefer linear crafted stories usually, but I really enjoyed how the second part of the game opened up & allowed me to tackle things in whichever order I wanted.
    4. I've been able to remove the nostalgia goggles from playing the. Game over the years as I grew up & still firmly believe that it's a rare example of as close to perfect as a game can be. The pacing is perfect, characters are unique & varied, gameplay is engaging but not demanding & most importantly it did things that are still missing from big games these days.

Compared to more recent clones (RPG maker), what I missed is the slow disappearance of deep interactions -> connection to the characters in the second part. It's due to the fact that only 3 characters are on the actual timeline, which you can choose, but their scripts will be the same.

I remember staying up all night trying to beat this game with a friend back in 1995. (It was a rental, so we had limited time.) We were able to get all the way to the black omen in about 12 hours, but had to abandon our quest as daylight broke. CT reminds me of a time when I could waste an entire day/night to play a game I enjoyed. I just picked up my own SNES version of the game last year and had a great time playing through it again.

I really like this type of video where instead of hearing that the game is one of many greats, the game's real strengths are highlighted to such detail. This video definitely has made me want to play Chrono Trigger enough to take it off the backlog. Hearing about the things that made a specific game really memorable feels like they carry more weight as reasons than just hearing slightly more generic responses. Hope to see another video like this on really any game that's quite popular, but also has its fair share of people that haven't played it.

It was nice hearing a solid perspective and opinion from you on something. It is such an amazing game. It gets even more fun when you start playing the New Game Plus and start beating the game and seeing different endings. It is tough for me to pick my favorite characters. I really like them all for different reasons. My favorite World though has to be the world in the Sky during the Dark ages. Such a hypnotizing song with an imaginary and beautiful world. I always thought, this must be what heaven is like.

I stopped playing it to play some of the N64 games that I hasn't beaten at the time. I really like the idea of time travel and a game using that concept is really cool since I am planning to beat it during the summer when I am done my first year of college.

I still have not played it yet. I have this weird (and very stupid) OCD where I don’t want to play certain games I know I’ll probably love, because once I beat it then my experience is over. So the sooner I start playing a game, the sooner the fun will end. And by not playing it, I’ll eventually one day get the chance to play it. An example is I barely played Final Fantasy VII for the first time in my life last week and immediately love it.

I did however get final fantasy chronicles on PS1 but never gave the game a thought as I had originally got it for FF4. Now that I’ve learned about chrono trigger and heard by so many how great the game is, I have to get myself to sit down and play it, though I’ve also heard that the best way to play it is on SNES, I’ll settle for PS1

It's a game that I get lost in a lot. I'd jump through all the different timelines trying to progress, and there is a lot to go through. That being said, when I do progress, it's incredible. The bosses are a joy to fight, the locations are rendered beautifully, and with each new song comes the further confirmation of that soundtrack's immortality. It's combat system also feels like the perfect way to design real-time action with turn based. Given that everyone and everything has a set speed, it's essentially turn based. But being patient for a half second for a team member's to dish out a team attack ads tension which yields big rewards. I'm going through the DS version for my first time and it lives up to its namesake.

My first 16-bit RPG. And 2nd only to Dragon Warrior. Chrono Trigger is basically a perfect experience, and I've never heard a criticism against it that seemed serious enough to make it anything less than elite. It really moves along well, the characters are all likeable, and KILLING THE MAIN CHARACTER?! A lot has been said about the music and other things, but it's really just about how well everything comes together well. It's masterclass, even if it's not everyone's top 5. But if we're looking at an unbiased top 5, the game could still be considered amongst modern games and hold its own, not unlike the 16-Bit SEGA Genesis version of Super Street Fighter II: The New Challengers.

So i have been playing Chrono Trigger since I got it on the PS1 in high school. I think I finally beat it about 12 years ago or so. I am more of a freedom 2nd halfer when it comes to game play. Although I do agree that a good balance of being guided through a story can help balance out some confusion on a 1st play through of any game. Chrono Trigger is probably in my top 20 games of all time almost everything about it is a fun experience. I think the multiple endings and all the col optional stuff is awesome and really adds to the game. The team I usually rolled with was Chrono, Marle, and Frog/Glen. I find the more I play this game the more I end up just calling him Glen lol. I am glad you had fun with it good sir.

    Story Time:
When I was in my early teens, and first learned of RPGs, my little bro, who enjoyed watching me play video games, was kinda bad at reading. Hence, I would read the in-game captions for him. And, since I wanted to make the game as interesting as possible, I would really overact, giving each character a unique voice and demeanor. By far, Frog was one of my favorite characters to voice. He had some of the best lines in this or any game - and of course, the Masamune scene. Yeah, you fans know the one. I get chills just thinking about it... 😏
"My name is Glenn! Cyrus's hopes and dreams, and now, the Masamune...
... Forewith I shall SLAY MAGUS AND RESTORE HONOR!!!"
Yeah, it's not in all caps in the game. But I always read it as though it is. 😎

Can't avenge my best friend, no way I can go kill that pos virus that took him last year. Don't really want to turn into a frog either tbh. Frog was definitely my favorite character when I played this in the mid 90s, but when I did a playthrough of it again last year Marle was my favorite since she brings some happiness to the story. This is one of maybe 10 games I have played in the last 40 years that I'd rank a perfect 10/10. Everything about this game is top notch, from the battle system to the soundtrack to the characters to story to the time travel mechanic, everything was amazing in this. My favorite time travel moment was saving Lucca's mother from getting her feet chopped off and seeing her up and dancing instead of stuck sitting in a chair by the window depressed all the time.
