For anyone with popcorn ceilings, I can vouch for how much a smooth ceiling bounces light and brightens a room vs how popcorn absorbs light (and looks dirty). It was the grossest job we've done, but so worth it in the end!

I have a 40 year old house with dark furniture I won't give up, so white and soft neutrals are my friends! And I am a clean and tidy person; it's amazing how much that contributes to a calming, light environment. No dark granite counters or black appliances or heavy drapery in my world. Sheer window treatments bring light in through smallish windows. Love table lamps, and recessed lights in kitchen and halls. And not overstuffing your rooms with furniture that doesn't really contribute to what the room is about.

I thought white would be a great choice for my bathroom until I painted a poster board white and saw it in there. It was so bright--and it was at the end of December! The skylight, the shiny white tile, and the location (sunny Denver) made the room too bright for white. I painted it a medium shade of lavender and it was perfect.

  • @EcoExist-qs1ue

I really appreciate these straightforward tips. I'm returning to Fairbanks, Alaska, where winter daylight is scarce, and homes typically have older features like small windows, chinked log walls, and strange ceiling angles for enhanced insulation. Most Fairbanks homes were constructed before 1979, and new construction is rare due to the high costs associated with shipping materials and labor.
Affording anything beyond a hovel isn't feasible with our fairly average income. So, I'm a huge fan of practical interior design advice for cost-effective renovations. Essentially, we aim to make things look less depressing without breaking the bank. If we can't do it ourselves, it doesn't happen. The saying “If it ain't broke, don't fix it, and if it is broke, break out the duct tape.” is really taken to heart up there, and unfortunately, most people's homes reflect this mindset.

My friend invested in pretty cat furniture. It does exist but good looking "cat trees" may be more accessible diy. It's possible but a lot of work. Cats do need 1. Surfaces to scratch; but these can be replaced often so they don't look ratty 2. Vertical space ; this can be floating shelves with a few books or other unbreakables on it that they can navigate to other parts of the room. Part of it should start in front of a window they can look out of, if you have an upholstered chair that to a cat is perfection. Then something not far away they can jump to like a floating shelf or cabinet or desk, then the top of a Billy bookcase can be the end point.

But, yeah, it would be nice if there were prettier cat trees. Not that they would stay that way for long but yeah.
You should do a video about home decor ideas that work for catification (check out Jackson Galaxy) and don't look like you live in a cat cafe. I did our powder room in a blue-black paint to complement the existing dark wood cabinets and black granite counter. I don’t know how much space a room needs for strong contrast to work, but our tiny powder room looks much better in luxe, moody, low contrast colors/finishes.

@@voirworks6002 Ooh thank you for sharing! Blue - black was a bold choice! I'm thinking Navy blue, even the ceiling. My first colored ceiling. Scary! But if I hate it there's always Kilz and the next weekend 😂 I love paint.

SAME! I'm taking notes too, but I am torn between both light and dark!
When Nick mentioned the 80/20 rule... It made me think I should go 80% moody/dark and 20% light. That will help me choose pieces better and paint too with that rule in mind. :)

OK, you took the cork out of the genie bottle. How about a video on living with cats without having that as a dominant decorating theme? Less catification, more coexistence?

If someone would create a really attractive ironing board, my house would never look cluttered. Actually, even with the ironing board out, my house doesn't look cluttered, just ugly! Surely the Scandinavians must have solved this problem. I also like a nice glass table to lighten up a room. You might have mentioned that when I was obsessing over my ironing board!

We painted the livingroom in b.moores cottonwhite. We also have stucco moldings on the ceiling, painted in clear white like the celling, in our east and west-window room. I think, this decisions makes our livingroom the most light and bright.(sorry for my english).

I would add that allowing air/light to move AROUND and UNDER things also creates lightness. Ex: floating vanity in the bathroom, sheer curtains, light fixtures that allow light to pass through, windows that open, sliding wall panels, furniture with thinner legs, getting things up off the floor and allow the eye to sweep across that surface without interuption (this only works with lovely and clean floors), mouting curtains high and wide, or shades above the window so none of the window is blocked by the window treatments when they are open, positioning furniture to not block the windows, opening the windows and doors to allow fresh air and light in, if desigining from scratch, position windows and doors such that you have a line of sight out a window when entering a room, or between rooms. Consider door swings carefully so there is egress space that is functional and not clunky. Mount tilt/turn windows on the interior wall (so the windowsill is on the exterior of the home), so the window can swing around and lay against the interior wall instead of opening perpendicular to thew wall and blocking egress internally. Consider pocket doors, transom windows, and stairs without risers to allow air and light to bounce and play around the space.

Nick, my flat has lots of light and I balance it with colors like BM Gentlemen Gray and Grey dove with a cream colored sofa and a gray print rug and accents of black wood for shelves and coffee table. decor like faux plants (I have no green fingers😢) and mirrors provide a calm and serene place. 😊 My kitchen is painted in dark color with light grey cabinets and white dining table set…creates a modern look. The bedroom is painted in greige color with khaki curtains, natural wood bed and wardrobe and dressing table in white…I use lighting to create the environment for sleep. Thanks to many of your videos, I could create cohesive look for my home. ❤

@@faux-nefarious I figure we home cooks aren't operating under the same conditions as in a pro kitchen. I produce one dinner in an evening, not 100, so the time pressure isn't the same. So we can work more slowly. I've never figured out the claw technique for small items.

Thank you for enlightening me about LRV! I did not know that is listed with the paint colors! I just recently had 2 rooms of my apartment painted and it was very difficult to pare down, I’m still working on it because everything loose had to be moved out into other rooms and it was quite a jenga. I was thinking of light and bright, and my paint choice is 83 LRV, I have lots of windows and I’m
happy with the color. I’m glad you spoke about color in the furnishings, because light and bright is not just white or neutrals. I think from my experience of the last few weeks of doing this, the most crucial part is curating the decor. Very hard for me as an avid thrifter and loving seasonal decor. There just has to be less to achieve light and bright. Thank you for all your insights!

Cat trees! I avoided this for years because the esthetic didn’t work for me. My solution was to get a nicer quality one with jute rope around the posts (instead of carpet), and I doubled it as a nice, multi tiered plant stand. It has a little hammock to the side that swivels which is where kitty wants to be most of the time on it. Kitty can still access to levels if he wants to look out the window. I think he actually enjoys the cute potted plants too.

Favorite general color is Behr Studio Taupe. I was surprised to see that its lrv is only 34. I had it in a north facing LR and DR (east facing). Large windows. Light wood floors. I loved it. I hate hot weather and it made it feel cooler but not cold.

I have a ton of south facing windows. My house is painted BM Cloud Cover, a warm off-white, LRV 80. It’s great! It’s bright but warm and cozy and not too bright with all this light. I agree with you Nick - a lot of whites would have been way too much with all this light.

I never use white paint, but prefer cozier colors. Pale, but more like light linen or cotton. I love mirrors. But I cover east in the morning and west in the afternoon in my high desert summer... lowers temps inside 10 degrees or more. The opposite in winter gives me passive solat heat 10 hours per day. I admit this is the only place I lived where I chased sun this way. The sun is harsh here.
