- Echeveria Whimsy. Rainbow cotton candy is how I would describe the look of this plant. This video chronicles how this beautiful Echeveria cultivar came into being. And....It also has a sibling that for now, I call Black Whimsy.

*frantically starts cleaning leaves and snapping stems!* LOL the excitement in your voice when you did that for the death bloom made me giggle. I only recently got a handful of my first succulents and I've been binging your videos along with others to gain the know-how I need. You've really inspired me to start my own plant journey. It's really relaxing listening to your videos!
I'm glad you're enjoying my videos. Wishing you all the very best with your plant journey and may they all grow like weeds.😁🥰
I find myself coming back to this and the following whimsy videos! I know making hybrids is tough work and takes time, trial and error. But there are simply not enough videos on RUclips talking about this. I LOVE LOVE LOOVE this topic so much and that’s how I started my succie collection tbh…I hope to be able to create my own hybrids in a near future
I think every plant parent dream or goal to have an own hybrid🧡💚
Just keep an eye on your new babies as some can grow very different from the Mommy plants. Also label them to be certain.
Fab Liz. The Whimsey hybrid should be awarded a gold medal of merit. It is BEAUTIFUL!
Thanks Bernie. I reckon so too...LOL
@@GrowingSucculentswithLizK Liz I have a bronze coloured plant just under 2 inches no matter what I do with them, but are almost identical to ghost plant. Any ideas what it may be? Propogate really easily. I'm thinking Graptosedum Vera Higgins/Alpine Glow. If it is I didn't realise all of the colours it could go 😱🥰🥰🥰
That's the most amazing flowers plans I ever saw have a blessed day my friend
Thank you Jillian! Have a great day too!
Beautiful plant Liz.
Thanks for sharing .
Thank you for watching Valisha.
Finally !!! I’ve been waiting for a video!!! I’ve been checking my notifications everyday 😊
Hope you enjoyed it!
@@GrowingSucculentswithLizK I always do…..and love when you say “ anyways…..” 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Do you believe pollinating the flower changed the leaves already produced on the stalk? This is very interesting!!! I love listening to you and seeing the way you do things! I appreciate your videos and your time !
I don't have an opinion on this whether it did or did not. I can only go by the result which is the Beautiful Whimsy.
That is what I am wondering... how can a black prince existing infl. leaf become hybridized after pollinating the flowers? It would mean that the pollination is absorbed through the bloom stalks. Does that happen?
Hello Liz.. The plum tree is looking beautiful. I have not been able to grow from seeds, but I'll keep trying.
Wonderful video... Have a great week.
You too Adela. Thank you for watching and commenting.🥰
Suculentas maravilhosas 🤩 obrigada pelas dicas 🙏
That’s such a cool idea , I was wondering if I could preserve pollen to make hybrids.
You sure can. Good luck and have fun. ☺
Beautiful Whimsy ❤️ labour of love ❤️
Thank you!
Wow that's so smart❤
Thank you so much! I watched this video 3 times! I can’t wait to try it!
Hope it works for you too Alicia. Thanks for watching.
Finally!Thank you Ms.Liz! I'll surely try it when my succulents bloom♥️
Good luck. Thanks for watching.
fantastic ideas Liz
Glad you like them!
Thanks for telling your experiences and knowledge. A good interesting content 👌🏽
Thank you for watching James. Cheers
Thank you, Liz, for sharing how you got Whimsy 😍
I also fell in love with Black Prince when I first saw it. I got them from Ikea too, and they were one of the first succulent I got. One of them rotted too, and I also saved some Leaves. Now I have a few Black Prince. The price of the Black Prince you paid in the past was almost like buying gold 😲 It's a privilege now we can buy many succulents at a reasonable price.
Looking forward to the next video 😍
Echeveria Bess Bates ($285) is still pretty expensive up to now. I hope my Bess Bates will color up more.
@@GrowingSucculentswithLizK I see, that's the price for the variegated one. Hope it grows beautifully for you ❤
So inspiring, sana one day magka hybrid din ako ❤️❤️ ganda
You can only try and you never know....You might also get lucky and have your own one. Propagate, propagate, propagate....LOL
@@GrowingSucculentswithLizK Hopefully talaga hehe, Na iinspired ako sayo tita
Extremely interesting, Liz! Thanks for the video!!
You're most welcome and thanks for watching.
I wish I could like this video twice! 😍
🥰🥰
That's Awesome and truly innovative 👌👌👌
Thank you! Cheers!
Long awaiteddd!!! 😆😆😆
However....whimsy family came from inflorescence leaves of a black prince AFTER the flowers, of the black prince, were pollinated???
Like...you pollinated them with monroe pollen, leave the inflorescence or the black prince to finish flowering, and then harvest the leaves to plant? 🤔
pl make a vedio of germination of polinated succullent i eagerly wanna see

Naka isang taon palang ako sa aking pagiging addicted sa mga succulents
Sa kkapanoon ko this channel nkikilala mga id nila ,then ngayon bcoz of this video parang gusto rin gumawa ng sarili kong hybrid
Who say's you can't? It's more fun going around looking for differences in the growth of newly propagated plants.

so incredible!!!
Thanks for watching Rosa. Glad you like it.
Love your garden so much all those plants and you just one person to manage. I love your Chanel.
It’s kind of like a recessive gene! I love this :)
Honestly.....Who knows. These plants are weird. They adapt so well to their environment that anything is possible.
Yeahay 🎊 thank you for the video😊

This is fascinating!
♥️Great video! Very informative. Loved it!♥️
Glad you liked it!! Thanks for watching Donna.
I came to you Liz K because I figured you would know over a ton of other people. So I'm trying to find out if string of watermelon AKA senecio Herreanus have seeds in their blooms. I had some seed pods from my string of hearts that I collected seeds from and I know when you open those, there is the white furry stuff inside and the seeds are in there, and the string of watermelon have the white furry stuff in the blooms so I didn't want to throw my blooms out until I knew for sure if they had seeds in them. Maybe you can help. Thanks! And all of your plants in this video are so pretty!!!
The fluffy bit is a dispersal mechanism of the plant. The wind will blow and scatter the seeds located at the tip of the fluffy bit. I usually spread them in the soil and water them or a light sprinkling of soil on top also helps to keep them down.
I’m in love with your Echeveria whimsy 😍 do you sell succulents?
Not at the moment. Thanks for watching.
I live in Jamaica. Wish I lived in Australia
Hi to my favourite succulent grower!
I learn so much from you and i’m Grateful that you respond always to my comments.
One more request! I live in the UK zone 8/9. I will be heading into autumn then winter in a months time. Could you do a video of the succulents that you have grown outside in the ground that survived over winter and those in pots that survived fully exposed over winter so that o can plan ahead. I have collected a large number of su Filene’s and think you ate in a similar zone....i’m Probably wrong so correct me but it would be helpful to have guidance on what I can risk leaving out this coming winter.
Thank you and only wish I was your neighbour :)
Most of my succulents are grown outdoors Nicola so it's difficult for me to enumerate which and what as there are other factors involved in growing succulents in my zone 9 area.
I have so much videos showing this but here are some below. Hope this goes through and not get labelled as spam by RUclips.

@18:35 nearly dead center of the screen nestled in between the pots just above the more red colored prince…….looks like two baby whimsy’s? Or just a different succulent that’s young when many young succulents look similar. But the coloring looks…whimsical…
Sadly only the standard Black Knight.🥰
which is the right season for fertilizer to them pl
Growing season is best time to fertilize. Different succulents have different growing season. This succulent in this video is fertilized from Spring through Autumn. Cheers
I am running late I have to finish watching this video later this afternoon but I’m wondering why well I know why my Monroe looks so different than yours but why so very different? Mine is like a blue gray with longer leaves anyway…
You know I am fascinated by this whole process and even your thought process and the reasons for making the whimsy and I was so looking forward to watching this video but I will definitely re-watch it later❤️❤️❤️
Different growing condition, soil, exposure, etc. and also the cultivar. Tissue culture Monroe vary in appearance as well.
@@GrowingSucculentswithLizK yeah I just went on Google when I stopped watching the video I guess mine is a blue Monroe. I actually think this is my last mature plant that I grew from a leaf propagation I have sold every other plant that I raised myself and it’s a little unsettling and sad. I listed this one the other day but I’m taking it down I’m never going to sell it lol❤️❤️❤️
@@janetac1738 A friend of mine argued with me that my Snow Angel is not a Snow angel because it doesn't look like her Snow Angel. Then I ask her which one is prettier. She said.....My Snow Angel is prettier that hers. I said...."That settled it then. LOL
@@GrowingSucculentswithLizK 😂😂😂
Nah, I know that the same plant can look completely different I mean you showed us that today with the Monroe's. And I definitely wouldn't want to go plant to plant comparison with yours I think you win hands down every time lol,😜😘
Ang gaganda, pabili po!
It's definitely one of the most unique and beautiful echeverias. Is there any way to get one? I live in the US.
Not at the moment. I'm still propagating and observing them, so I can't part with any of them yet.
I don't get this,
The hybrids need to come from the cross pollinated seeds, how from the inflorescence? Please explain.
If so will this happen whether you cross pollinate them or not?
It's cross pollinated but just not seed grown. I have a few inflorescence leaf from other plants that also grew different from the mother plant. Maybe there's still a lot about succulents that needs to be learned. Thanks for watching.
Thanks for this info! XXXX Love your way of let things happen and just see what happens! Can you explain what is the difference between a Willy Wonker and Black Prince? I have some weird and wonderful thing happening with my Black Prince babies as well!
Willie Wonker is a tissue culture(lab created) of Black Prince. Tissue culture plants can look different from the original cultivar.
Can I buy a Whimsy from you that looks pastel like that and you ship to Chicago?
I don't have enough to sell at the moment. I'm still growing them.
Sorry I don't understand... So finally, your beautiful Whimsy was from Black Prince's inflorescence leaf, not from cross-pollination between Monroe and Black Prince, right?! Thank you very much
Exactly right Norah. Thanks for watching.
@@GrowingSucculentswithLizK Thanks for replying 😊
Dear Liz, please tell me what I should do, with echeveria west rainbow. They seem to be slightly coated with powdery stuff, and also not at all doing well. I had paid a lot of money and I want to everything possible to save it. Please help me. I would greatly appreciate.
Where did you get your West Rainbow? I mean seller or country of origin?
@@GrowingSucculentswithLizK they came from Hong Kong or may be even China
@@vijayasawrikar5454 Where do you live? Or what season are you in now? What temperature? Weather can affect the plant. They go to sleep when it's hot. What do you mean not doing well? What condition is the plant in? Is it rotting or wilted? What soil do you put it in?
The white powder could be fungicide which doesn't hurt the plant.
@@GrowingSucculentswithLizK I live in Sydney
@@GrowingSucculentswithLizK it is neither rotting or wilting, but the leaves don't seem healthy.
❤❤
💖💖💖💖💖🤩🤩
🥰🥰🥰
Let me understand: you cross pollinated but you didn't sow the seeds, u took the flower leaves instead to propagate as new plants???
Yes that's right. I have a few plants grown from leaves even w/o going through the process in this video that grew completely different looking plants from the mother.
@@GrowingSucculentswithLizK Wow, I could have never figured out that!!!! This morning I X pollinated a Topsy Turvy to a Black knight.......... let's se what and if something good comes out.... :)
@@GrowingSucculentswithLizK hi Liz, I’m thinking that it’s not a hybrid unless it’s the result of a true ‘cross’ which would only be sowing the pollinated seeds that were crossed between 2 different varieties. The inflorescent leaves haven’t been crossed or pollinated at all. The resulting babies are natural variations of that plant (i.e. would look just the same if you never pollinated or cross pollinated the flowers).
@@jeanine6492 Thanks for watching Jeanine and sharing your thoughts. I do these videos to share my experience in growing these plants. There's still a lot to be learned.
I shouldn't have been so hasty as to say that this is my hybrid but instead should have said that it's my "Cultivar." But the word Cultivar according to the Australian Native Society (Australia)...
a cultivar may be:
:an unusual form of a pure species that was discovered in the wild,
:a form that arose by chance in a batch of seedlings in a nursery, or
:a hybrid.
Which none of these describe my Whimsy. So for now, I'll stick to the word hybrid.
@@GrowingSucculentswithLizK hi Liz. I wasn’t being critical, and I love all of your videos. I was just confused as I thought your whimsy is so beautiful I’d like to try and cross the parents to see if a seed produced a whimsy like yours. When you said it was from the influorescent leaf and not seed, I was very discouraged because it may be just a chance in a million to get yours. I hope I explained my comment properly, I certainly didn’t mean any offence. 😫
Why do you call it death blooms?
Death bloom is when that part of the plant shows sign of growing into another rosette plant but instead produce blooming flowers at the end and not grow into a mature plant.
❤❤❤
