- Russian citizens are fighting for Ukraine against Vladimir Putin’s regime as part of the Freedom of Russia Legion, a military unit whose operations are overseen by Ukrainian intelligence.
As well as seeing action in eastern Ukraine, the Legion has carried out armed incursions into Russian border towns in the Belgorod region, clashing with the Kremlin’s troops and even briefly occupying patches of territory.
In Moscow, it has been declared a terrorist organisation and people have been sentenced to up to 12 years in prison for allegedly plotting to carry out acts of sabotage on its behalf.
The Times meets with Legion members near Ukraine's frontline to understand their hopes and fears in their fight against Putin's army.

I have the upmost respect for these Russian soldiers who defected. Their government (Putin) lied to them. Many of these young Russian soldiers were told that they were going to do some "live fire" training (aka wargames)

During WWll there also were Russian collaborationists called Russian Freedom Army or Vlasovtsy who fought against their own people alongside nazi germans. The motivation of Freedom Legion is in the hope that they will defeat Russian army and will change Russia for better. 🤔

You're brainwashed. If Nato enters this conflict, it'll mean death for loyalist civilians in Russia. You've only seen a taste of what NATO is capable of in Ukraine. And I'm not a NATO fanboy. It's the facts- a million fresh soldiers who've been waiting for their opportunity to shed Russian blood since the invasion began. Despite what Russian propaganda says, Russia is not ready to take on the west. Even with China and North Korea backing it.
If NATO enters this conflict, it either means nuclear war, or the death of hundreds of thousands of Russia's loyal citizens. And the death of an even greater number of civilians (look at what Israel has done to Gaza. That's what will happen to Russia). NATO entering the conflict openly is the worst case scenario for Russia. Any opinion to the contrary is childish. War is death en mass. You're literally poking a hungry bear while your own children cower behind you.
