- Me and my brother Iain, travelled to Snowdonia to compete in the 54th edition of The Original Mountain Marathon.
Held at the end of every October since 1968, 'The OMM' is a self-reliant 2-day journey through some of the UK's finest mountain terrain. Set in a new area each year, it is a true test of mountain craft, resilience & sense of humour.
On the start-line, teams of two are handed a map of their chosen course and need to plan a route between checkpoints, finishing at the halfway overnight campsite. To complete the race you need to be self-reliant & carry everything needed for 2 days, including the halfway camp. Day 2 you get new checkpoints to find, finishing back at the event centre.
We entered the medium score course, and had 6 hours on day 1 and 5 hours on day 2 to find as many checkpoints as we could in any order and any route. The team with the highest score wins.
Although very challenging we both had a great time and managed a total of 446 points, finishing in 187th position out of 234 medium score course competitors. Not bad for our debut.
I hope you enjoy.
Great video guys. I have posted to the OMM Competitors group on Facebook
Thank you. That’s much appreciated 🙏
Great job lads , impressive 👏
Thank you. 🙏
Thanks for the video, always good to see how others get on. I was in long score. Slightly jealous of your relative luxury overnight.
Hey, thanks for watching and leaving a comment. Yeah, we had a really comfortable night……. Apart from the aroma 🤮 looking forward to next year. We’re thinking of doing the long score. All the best mate 🙏
Interesting! Not seen anything about the OMM before. Certainly got all the gear and... you ate well! 😉 You've reminded me to get some miso soup. Good stuff for warming you up. Thanks for uploading, Steve.
Yeah, the Miso makes a nice change. Might try an old fashioned oxo cube on my next camp. Thanks for watching and commenting. All the best 🙏
Thoroughly enjoyed that! Had no idea this was a thing… now it’s on my radar for next year!
Cheers Al. I’m sure it’d be right up your street. Next years is in the Southern Highlands of Scotland. Reckon it’ll be a bit colder 🥶
🙏
@@belowaveragewildcamper it’s definitely caught my interest thanks to your video!
That’s looks a good challenge and a well organised one too. I could imagine loosing your bearings pretty easy in unknown terrain in the clag. All the best Mark.
It was great mate. We were lucky with the weather though. Hopefully my luck will last for next year 🤞
Congratulations 🙌It looked tough!
Cheers John. It was tough but the good weather made it very enjoyable. Hope you’re well mate. ATB 🙏
Tough challenge, but you both put in a fantastic effort. Well done.
Thanks Steve. My legs have only just recovered now. All the best mate 🙏
Great effort from you and your kid. Thanks for sharing what the OMM is, i had no idea but I am now enlightened. Cheers Steve, keep up the great work.
Cheers Steve. Hope you’re well 🙏
Great video. Fantastic effort with the challenge, well done. It looks like a lovely area, I’m ashamed to say I’ve not visited Snowdonia……yet
Thanks Brian. It’s only the 2nd time I’ve been and it is a really spectacular place. All the best 🙏
Looked epic mate…and tough, I definitely would of got lost , my lack of navigation skills are legendary 🤣, looked like a load of people doing it too, spot on Steve, atb Mick 👍
I think there was around 1800 people in total. Definitely not a pure wild camping experience. No solitude that night. Cheers mick. All the best mate 🙏
Well done! If you enjoyed that you should try the OMM lite in June in Grasmere. It focuses on the navigation side so no need to carry all your kit, just your day kit. You can stay in your van too…..and there’s a bar!
Alternatively there’s the Grasmere Gallop trail marathon the same weekend
Just had an email about the OMM Lite. Looks a good way to improve navigation.
Thank you for watching and leaving a comment. Much appreciated 🙏
Loved the vid as always and what a great event!
Cheers for watching and commenting. Already planning to enter next years in the Highlands of Scotland 🏴 🙏
@@belowaveragewildcamper That'd be amazing! Looking forward to the video of it aha
I’m pleased I sent the youngest son as a substitute, however I’m sure I would have gained more points 🫣🫣🫣🫣
I've seen what you're like on slippy surfaces. We'll say no more on that subject!! 🚑
