I completely agree, thank you Ben. Could I share my opinion - forget about motivation, because motivation is our mood. Trouble at work or college destroys the mood and there is no desire to study. But just consistency is better than motivation. No mood - you can read, listen to podcasts. Consistency in study is better than waiting for inspiration🙂
I really love English! I remember that I started learning English alone when I was 13 years old. My family didn't send me to highschool for the economy situation, but I really wanted to learn something, so I started borrowing English workbooks from my relatives and friends, I also got some cassettes, and I began to realize how beautiful is to have the ability to learn a different language, how challenging it is, and all of a sudden one day I realized that I had stopped translating in my mind and I think, that is the prize to be constant, we never stop learning, I continue with my journey now, I am also trying to learn Portuguese and German, and I keep practicing English every single day! Thanks for being such a nice person!😊
I have been studying english for quite sometime, mostly through tv shows. Over the last 7 months I decided to study in a different way, through reading, like BBC, CNN and FOX and I can assure you that my written has improved a lot. As I work with foreign trade, I use my english on a daily basis and since then i felt more confident and I have a ton of new words to type out when I writing an email. Only I had known what I had to do to level up my english was to read, I would have started it sooner
@@unciaciapanca yes. I go there and red their break news also I like to read BBC work, culture, planet, etc. I own a kindle so i try to read some books too
Agree, reading helps a lot and it helped me with my first steps with learning language. You can see a structure, logic, grammar, perhaps not that obviously but your brain works hard and you dont notice but see results. My level is B2 today and I've got a work of dream for which I started learning English 2 year ago. Honestly, if I had had that experience in learning I have now, It would have been easier and faster. Just don't give up, guys, and study every single day you have spare time and the progress will be on the corner.
Hey, Ben! I just got my score, I undertook the FCE exam, and I got: Reading: 190 Use of English: 190 Writing: 180 Listening: 186 Speaking: 190 I passed with grade A (which is C1), thanks for everything you've done for us, you inspired me to work hard
I love reading very much but I don't treat it as the main way to learn new words. Instead, the old fashioned approaches, namely flashcards and "lists of words", have been working well for me. It's encouraging to see the words I've recently learnt do appear in authentic texts as a way of cross validating their usefulness. The number of C2 level words and idioms is quite crazy to be honest, I go for the Barron's approach to study 5 new words a day and 4 days a week. Then, I am free to do whatever I like, which usually turns out to be reading thriller books or random National Geographic articles or Ted talk transcripts.
Thanks ben a lot for your tips! if there would be one tip I'll take from your video it would be the second tip, which was pay more attention, since I moved to the uk, I totally got busy with the other things in life that l forgot to keep learning. I'm in a level I can understand the most conversion and reply well but I don't pay more attention to the new words and so on. so l feel my English level is just the same only my accent improved bit. thanks a lot !
I'm on the same page as you, Ben. Reading is absolutely key to learn new vocab and structures. I'm beginning to enjoy unabridged books in English, which is quite challenging for me. Now, I need to jump in at the deep end with my speaking skills. I'm scared stiff with English pronunciation!! 🥶
Тhank you much for being supportive! And these views in the the background are wonderful) And my advice for learners is to watch series as their vocabulary is quite repetitive. You can revise words and thus remember them well
Thanks, Ben! Each language is a combination of reading, writing, listening and speaking and developing of all these skills together is a key to success!
Thank you so much, Ben, for these tips. I just want to share one of the ways that I personaly find really uselful. At least it helps me learn English faster. I find a video with the content I'm intersted in. First off, after watching it a couple of times I I do kind of shadowing. Next step, I write down all the expressions that I need to retell the video or can help me boost my vocabulary. After retelling it a couple of times I go over them the next day and try to retell the video again to see how much I remember. I find your videos particularly helpful. The content, the expressions you're using and the pace make this learning process effective and enjoyable for me. Thank you.🙏
These could be particular practices for active reading: 1-Read out loud 2-Note down the words and phrases you don't know or you think you'd use 3-Write your own article about the article you read, like what it is about, do you agree or not? 4-Try to speak about your thoughts on that article, to a wall maybe, like you're debating over it. As Ben said, if we need to study one thing, that'd be this active reading. Because it's literally active.
Thanks for your help. I use English every day and I will make loads of mistakes. I surround myself in English but still not progressing the way I want. That's the way the cookie crumbles

Hello English teacher you make your video around a good scenary in the country SIDE . I'm RICHARD and i learn English language on my own .I tell you is not easy but as like English I keep learning, I'm French people and in general French people doesn't speak English. I don't know why ? And in spite of that I continue to struggle and what I do i talk to myself in English language. To help to do that I go to the bathroom in front of the mirror and i talk .sometime I feel little frustrated because nobody answer what I talked about . Last time I watched on RUclips the story about JOB obviously in English to improve my listening skill. Interesting story shows me sometime is not easy to worship GOD .My main purpose to learn English is not to be the best in this field it's better to discover new culture and when I was seventeen always with my brother we listened to English group. Now I'm sixty one years and i spend my free time to read and listen to music . Step by step I'm reading the holy scripture .but I discover its more difficult to practice output than input .maybe my case I'm alone I think . Thank you to read my message I hope to have an answer if you can obviously see you soon I'm RICHARD
People often approach learning as obligation and it's obliterating and mind numbing, 'cause you gotta find what you love doing for instance: your hobbies, daily activities, leisure, also make an unorthodox approach to translate all your traditions that is in your country, what you celebrating, customs and so much more, read the Bible and make metaphors off of the book and apply it to your own life, your own experiences, stand in front of a mirror and talk to yourself and laugh to yourself which will significantly enhance your verbal communication skills and neuroplasticity will be stretched and sleep enough, moderate physical activity every single day, stretch your abdominals just stretch in general don't be a stretch 😂 no man for real the things you're doing with your body is as essential as if you would work with your mind. And don't forget about Pomodoro technique which is 90/20 I believe, every 90 minutes of studying make sure to rest 20 minutes afterwards or adjust at whichever pace you feel comfortable with and don't overthink it. Just make sure you do it for yourself because you love it and your soul craves it, nothing external
Thank you for your videos and usefull tips! I hear to podcasts, TEDtalks and english classes on a regular base, but I'm not used to read in English. Which online sources would you recommend to read daily? Something with interesting and mixed topics.... Thank you Sir!
Honestly, I find that if I engage too much with my readings or watching TV I easily loose all the pleasure. Cause we all know they are for relaxing. Therefore, once in a while it s ok, doing it daily becomes more of a challange
Great option is to find text friend, whose mother language is English. The best choice is maybe a little bit “pedantic”, British type of person xD It motivates a lot to use proper grammar and more advanced vocabulary. Also you can always ask, if you wrote or told sth correctly and you can learn new, interesting, useful words and phrasal verbs just talking. It’s like your private native speaker. No charges, maximum fun and profits :) (I hope my comment is not offending to anyone, I know it’s a little bit like product recommendation or worse - using someone for your benefits xD). But as you can probably see - Unfortunately I stopped texting with my British friend…
Yes, I believe it does. You learn more vocabulary and understand grammatical structure better when reading because you see them in context and you can read at your own pace. Audiobooks are good for improving you listening comprehension, of course.
Sometimes it's automatic, I hit the "like" even before you speak 😄
😆 I hope you don't change your mind once I start speaking!
