I've been listening to Deep Green's work over the last few days and this guy has talent. His voice is great - powerful and basey - and his flow is pretty decent. The area he is falling down onat the moment is that his work is still largely imitates American narratives - ie - starting off at the bottom and making it to the top, staying strapped, popping bottles, driving phantoms etc - it's all very unoriginal and really doesn't reflect the reality of a guy living in Netherthorpe Sheffield. If he wants to take his art to the next level he should focus more on the specific struggles of growing up in his area - how he found school - how he got into certain situations - his relationships with his parents - his aspirations - does he want to move beyond Sheffield and become more international? All of the really deep, specific stuff that is relevant to people in his area. - he should go into detail on that. He should also use more of his own local slang more than American slang. All of those things will take his work to the next level.
I believe he can become a great artist but his work needs to develop more originality. If you look at UK artists who have made it into superstars such as Dizzie Rascal and the Arctic Monkeys, the most notable thing about them is that they worked out their own narratives and used their own language and weren't overly influenced by American artists and clichéd stories and lyrics. It's hard work to be truly original but the great artists find a way to achieve that.
