You rock!
Thanks for being awesome!
You mean a lot to me, thanks for getting me back into the hobby. Great video!
Hey thats great to hear! Glad you have rekindled your interest in radio.
Good review Mike on the pros and cons. I appreciate you showing the different radio/gear configurations.
No problem 👍
Wow! Great video. Liked & Subscribed. I just love how minimal this is but effective. Oh yeah, say Yes! to Michigan! Love the great lakes and the outdoors. Thank you!
Awesome! Thank you!
9:35 - don’t know why but I just started hearing informercial jingles in my head.
I bet a coating of scotchgard would prevent absorption, but also don’t know how often I’m going to be spraying…or going to be sprayed by some guy with a hose while carrying my POTA station. I think it’s rain resistant, at best, but so is a paper bag, until it isn’t 😂
Great video review 👍 I'm been looking for a good bag to carry my radio gear.
Thanks for watching. Just don't get it too wet!
Excellent review....lots of options and detail showing such.....if a person needs such equipment.
Glad it was helpful!
Nice review. Looks like a decent backpack for some POTA. The USB port is awesome.
That was a pretty thorough review Mike, thank you. 🤘While I was not in the market for another backpack, I really like this as an option for an EDC emcomm bag for my car. This would be perfect for the Public Service Event that I am supporting next weekend, where I will be a communications operator. 😎👍 That being said I would not take it out for a SOTA activation, but I would certainly rock it for a POTA outing. Well done sir...
That it would, and it's only $45! I'd prob want something I could cram more stuff in for a SOTA, but for POTA this is a good option.
Even in the military we use waterproof backpack covers over the waterproof backpack lol there are cheap plastic waterproof covers with elastic that slide right over it.
I'm a sucker for bags, cases, and containers. This one looks real sleek.
It is a bag that you don't have. Buy all the backpacks!!
I love your videos. Thanks for checking the bag out. On a scale of 1 to 10 I would give the bag a 4 for the reasons you mentioned and there is no chest strap. I would like to see you take it on one of your hikes and then tell us how it did. 73s
I would tend to agree with you. It is pretty capable and a good price though.
There are very few packs that are waterproof, the most common is the dry bag that they just added shoulder straps to. That is why I carry a poncho. If it rains it can cover you and your pack.
I am learning that. I have a poncho too. You'd think I would put it in my pack lol!
Good review, and water test. I'm not sold on the labial zipper pouch.
Haha, that is a very descriptive name for it.
More waterproof than the cheap backpack off of Amazon that I use right now, that is for sure. If they are still offering it with the X6100 when it is time for me to buy I certainly won't pass it up.
Dude, I met you at Belton and knew immediately that you were a no BS guy. If you say something’s a good deal or a good buy- then it is. If you say it’s shit, then it’s shit. Love the honesty and thorough reviews. NH7TR…
I appreciate that. I wouldn't say this is shit, it's quite a nice bag. Just not waterproof. Thanks for watching. 73
Do you think a wolf river coil SOTA special would fit? the whip is about 15" long fully collapsed, and the loading coil and tripod legs are about 12". With a G90 and 8Ah battery
Great video Mike❗️ I just started putting my backpack together for the new Xiegu 6100 that I ordered last week. I am planning on walking down to the little park in my subdivision and working some QRP on nice days this winter. 73. KV5P
Shouldn't this bag come with the 6100? I know they had it on special when they did the first round of pre-sales on it.
@@hamradiotube Radioddity offered it but is was going to cost an extra $40.00 if you took the bundle so I opted not to as I have fantastic backpack that I am not using.
Hi Mike, if you still have this pack I would love to know how it works for the new Xiegu X6100. Thanks.
The FT-991 almost fits maybe I will try removing the rubber feet and see if it gets it done.
Awesome by the way you had me at the USB outlet. I would buy one if I did not have the icom Backpack
But you have so many radios, you need another bag lol!
That strap across the back of the pack is probably to slide onto a suitcase handle when it's extended.
Thats what others have suggested. That thought would never even cross my mind. It's already on my back.
The strap at the back padding is probably to put ove the handle of a rolling suitcase. Lol material didn't look waterproof and stitching is where it usually leaks , thanks Mike.
Thats what someone else said.
I got a FREE Backpack coming with the X6100 when/if it gets here..LOL Good info Mike! Love your videos!
Awesome. I hope that radio is as cool as it looks!
Perhaps a thorough Scotchgard treatment might enhance the water resistance? I used to do that to turn a pair of jeans into ski pants. Just a thought.
I'm thinking so.
I purchased this bag as a package with the Xiegu X-5105.
I like it, and I don't. I agree it lacks attachment points for a mast. I'm a big person and I find the straps are not very functional without some sort of sternum strap -I ended up making one).
As far as waterproof - I always take a pack cover with me whether playing radio or day hiking. I never trust any manufacturer's claim of being waterproof.
For my use (either my Xiegu X-5105 or G1M, antenna, battery and tablet/keyboard, it works. I give it an 8 out of 10. With a few low cost modifications it could be much more useful.
Nice combo deal! I would certainly take something to cover it if I thought it was going to rain. Works great so far otherwise. I hear you on the straps. I don't use a chest strap but I would like some other points to strap stuff on. Thanks for watching. 73
Now waiting for you to start skipping down a trail yelling " Backpack, backpack lets look at the map" Just like Dora the explorer.
Nice review Mike! I am getting one with my pre-ordered 6100 @ $0 additional cost. 73, KF6IF
Heck yeah! That radio looks sweet!
@@hamradiotube Take a length of paracord and sling the mast on the top of the pack using the cross strap on the inside of the back of the pack.
Everything is a comprise….nice review
Thanks Don!
Wow, that 20 AH battery is as big as the radio. That is sure a lot of weight that backpack can handle.
Gotta have all the power! It's quite a bit of weight for sure.
Hi Mike. Seems RUclips don't like links to Amazon products LOL, they keep deleting my post. I suggest you find a good waterproof "Poncho" with built in hoodie, that folds up small to fit in your backpack. If it rains, it will cover your body and backpack. When it's not raining, you can lay it on the floor and operate your equipment on it. Keeps you and your equipment away from bugs, sand etc
Thanks for the tip
I wish someone would make a bag that is larger for larger people. Waterproof and with Molle. The iCOM bag is just a bit too small and this just looks too "slick" (meaning no external attachment points for an IFAK, pole, etc). Good review.
I suppose you could get a bigger bag from amazon or somewhere. More of the Tactical variety. There is waterproofing spray that I've seen people use too.
@@hamradiotube Very true. I've been looking and have several packs. I've yet to find one that has lots of padding, that is water proof. Closest I've found is the Cannae Pro Gear Phalanx (30 liter volume +7 liters for an external pack), but yeah, it's $125.
What is a more tactical bag that works well for POTA?
Shoot, there's all kinds of them. The one I use I can't find anymore. Just go to Amazon and type in tactical backpack. I've been really happy with the Icom bag for my 705 though.
Strap on the back pad is so you can slide it over the handle of a rolling bag. Then you can GO GO GO.
Why does everyone in the world know this but me?
@@hamradiotube drag a luggage bag and a computer backpack around the world and you learn pretty fast!
Mike just one thing where is a basic first aid kit
on my other backpack
Great review, but I'm less than enthused. I use a Osprey Archeon 25 for my needs. 73!
Good choice!
Do you think that will fit a 7300 plus a battery?
That would be a big ask. You'd prob be able to stuff it in but this would not be the bag I would use for that at all.
Black strap on back is to slip over extended handle on carry on at airport.
Probably the best $20.00 bag available.
If it were only $20 though
nice review don't think my 991a would fit 73 KQ4CD
It might, but prob nothing else!
@@hamradiotube then no room for anything else. bat, ant, coax . looks like a two bagger
I think the strap that would be up against your back when wearing, is to go over your roller bag handle if you are traveling. I wish all backpacks had that.
Hmm, that's a pretty good idea. But wouldn't one just be wearing the backpack?
@@hamradiotube not always, it works well when you are sitting you can attach it to your carry on and keep everything together.
@@hamradiotube It's one of those things that when you're in the airport, you put the backpack on your roller, but use the backpack by itself if you've checked in your luggage already.
It's probably good advice to spend a tenner on a waterproof cover whether one's pack is "waterproof" or not, because hardly any of them genuinely are, including much more expensive ones.
Not a bad idea. I have packed a plastic bag sometimes when I would go out with the 705 just in case.
I typically go to town with the spray on waterproofing. Waterproof liner or not bags get heavy and gross if their nylon shell soak up water.
Your braver than I am with a 'waterproof' bag.
It was scary I'm not gonna lie. I did not test it before that either.
K8MRD RADIO STUFF. Braver than I would have been. I’d have stuffed it with clothes! 73
So, they should instead call it water resistant? I can see that. That long with the hose is a genuine torture test because the hose puts out much more than the sky usually does. If you're out in the weather when it's pouring that much then you're probably in the middle of severe weather when you should be under shelter.
Hi Mike really enjoyed the review of the bag, But what you have said hopefully they will listen I don’t think it would cost that much more to do those improvements that you talked about.About the waterproofing that’s kind of scary when you got like your iPad on the back part of The bag so they may need to improve on that also. Hopefully they will listen to what you said and improve on it. Hope you have a great day and take care.

Steve
I was really hoping it would be waterproof. It's not hard to do. There's literally a spray you can buy to waterproof fabrics. Not a deal breaker for me though. Would be nice to have some attachment points on the outside though.
Unfortunately using a hose to test the "water proofness (Is that a word??), is that most city water supplies use up to 120psi. (That is at the high end. I lived in a mini home and kept blow valves apart. Hod to put a reducer on it to save my pipes.) Most are between 60 to 80 PSI. Ad on the sprayer, and it pumps it up 2PSI, 500PSI who knows? A rain is falling onto the top of the backpack not being forced directly at any one point. Will it still leak in a real world scenario? Probably. You go out in a down pour for long enough, it will likely start to ingress once the fabric gets saturated. Good video though.. I'm in the market for a backpack that will hold everything I need, but small enough that I won't bring too much extra crap!
You should come see some of the storms we have here. It rains pretty darn hard. To call something waterproof and not survive 15 seconds of a hose is not waterproof in my opinion. Fortunately I don't go out if rain is in the forecast so there's very little chance I need it to be waterproof.
The capacity for SOTA isn't that bad (shorter activations) but not having a padded waistband and mesh side pockets for water bottles and the mast is a deal breaker for me.
Ah, yes. Good point.
Will it fit a 891 or 705? I’m in of so. That overpriced icom bag is stupid overpriced
Hmm. I wonder if you watched the video. You would have your answer.
Too bad they didn't ship the 6100 in it for you to test. Hoping the 6100 is better than the backpack which doesn't seem all that impressive. But maybe more impressive than the GSOC. The real test is how comfortable it is on a long hike and Radioddity is not REI (from some other reviews ICOM apparently isn't either).
This bag looks like it follows a lot of the grey-man philosophy for low-observability, and lack of external molle straps is one of those characteristics.
Yes it does, but I still would like somewhere to put my mast. Grey men need masts too haha!
@@hamradiotube for sure. A lot of bags disguise a mast holder as a "water bottle holder" - and they just have a loop/strap about 1' above the bottle holder to slide a mast through. :-)
Adding this to an x5105 off radiodity decreases the order price by like 60 dollars
Sweet!
Surely any tactical 12 or 24 hour edc gotta be better than this bag.
Can get WaterProof over Covers for Rucksacks
Rather use one of those and be 100%
Wouldnt Buy that one ..WaterProof My Arse lol
Surely got be a Trades Desciption Candidate
Good Vid though ..Better to see the Vid AND not Purchase one and have to Fight a Claim against Ruin of Equipment
Can't trust a company that makes false claims just to make sales....not for me
Mate, that backpack sucks in almost every way including the two things you found annoying. But moreover, it has no breast strap, has no proper harness system, wrong colour for radio bag, and seems like it’s a yuppy cappuccino bag for city use.
I didn't realize radio bags needed to be a certain color. How did I make it all the way to Extra without learning that? While a breast strap would be nice for some, I literally never use them on any of the other bags I have so it doesn't matter to me. For you this bag might not be right, but that doesn't mean its not right for someone else. Plus, did you watch the whole video? Specifically the part about this being a good Grey Man bag because you do look like a nerd carrying your school books. I said that. I guarantee you, if SHTF, more people would be going after you just from what your avatar picture is than dorky old me. I would still be armed however. And I'd have comms. But no one would suspect it.
Thanks much. It was in the cart, but I took it out. N2NUT
