Pezonisi Eretria | It was once known as the 'Island of Dreams'... now it is consigned to time
The once enchanting "Island of Dreams", Pezonisi Eretrias with an area of ​​66 acres of real estate and just 1.5 hours from Athens is now surrendered to the wear and tear of time.
Its building facilities have literally been looted and ransacked over time, due to the chronic dispute between the Municipality of Eretria and the State Real Estate Company which makes it impossible for new investors to exploit the property.
After the Revolution of 1821, the Greek state determined that Pezonisi would belong to the "Community of Psarians", as Eretria was known in the 19th century. In 1967, the post-colonial government granted it to the Hellenic Tourism Organization, setting a period of 70 years for use and exploitation.
After the fall of the post-colonial government, the Council of State decided that the exploitation of Pezonisi should return to the Municipality of Eretria. A public tender was therefore announced, which was won by the company Rest Club SA, which made bold investments on the island, building two central hotel facilities with a total of 52 rooms and 46 bungalows. In addition, tennis, mini golf, volleyball and table tennis facilities were built, as well as a restaurant, beach bar and a 300-space parking lot.
The golden age for Pezonisi, which in the second half of the 1970s began to be known as the "Island of Dreams", attracting many people every summer. But that era came to an abrupt end in 2008, when it was revealed that the tenant had not won any tender, but instead had been outright awarded at a rent of up to €100,000 (in today's money) per six months. Thus, as the law provided, the private investor was evicted and the ownership of the Apartment returned to the municipal authority.
Due to the developments of 2008, the once "Island of Dreams" was left abandoned. A development proposal submitted by the Greek-American businessman Lambros Angelopoulos never went ahead and what would happen to the island became embroiled in a bureaucratic confrontation between the Municipality of Eretria and the Public Real Estate Company (ETAD), which finally prohibited in 2012 from proceeding with exploitation procedures without her permission.
In the intervening years there have been many discussions about Pezonisi within the local government, as well as some public consultations. However, no solution has been found, with the result that the peasantry in Eretria has been left to its own devices.
