Best video on veneering I've seen to date. I had no idea that there was a right and wrong side when it comes to gluing up, and the tips regarding adhering wet and dry to the contact side of a straight edge to prevent slippage, and the thin-strip cutting jig were absolutely priceless! What a superb craftsman and teacher you are sir!
Hi David. Thank you so much for your kind comments and the time you took to post them. P[eased you got something from it. I really enjoy the veneering process so am pleased you have been helped along. Cheers Steve
Thank you! Found a beautiful old desk on the side of the road. The veneer is trash. I will watch the rest you have to offer and get busy with it. Thank you again!
I’ve been very nervous about using veneer because of all the difficulties you covered here and more. Thank you, now to find the next one in the series.
Terrific another on in the family. Hope you get as much enjoyment out of the craft as I do John. Thanks for letting me know and I appreciate the feedback. Cheers Steve
I'm with you, but unfortunately many still feel it's a cheap form of furniture or cheating. I think this started back in the 50's, 60's and early 70's with introduction really cheap imitation mass produced plastic veneers and sort of stuck. Personally I am very happy with veneers and solid edge work as long as the construction and sub-straight materials are of a sufficiently high enough quality and not Chipboard of fiber density panels. These materials do have their place and function but for me it's definitely not high end craftsmanship built pieces. Cheers Steve
Steve Thanks you have just answered a huge problem for me. I have been trying to make banding for drawer front for William and Mary highboy. The veneer had to be cut in a haring bone pattern and had been a huge pain now I can use the spacers blocks and it works perfectly My thanks Jim

@Woodworkingmasterclass liked? No... I loved it! TY for sharing your knowledge. I am starting with veneering and I learned in this video more than in the last 10 or so about the subject. Cheers from Brasil! 🤩
I have some experience in woodworking but it's my first time with veneer had no idea about sides. I am tempted to put pattern but no sure if can manage
Steve
Thank you for some very helpful tips - most appreciated. Do you have any tips on how to bulk cut veneer sheets into strips? I have about 400 sheets requiring cutting into 1/4 inch strips for miniature parquetry. Thanks
Hi Angie, The way I would do large numbers of sheets is to clamp them between 2 sheets of plywood and put them over a table saw. I would prefer a Table saw but is may also work on a Bandsaw with a fine tooth blade. Cheers Steve
my piece is not a perfect sq. is the top of a dresser. i can’t put a dresser in a bag 😂 right! so how do i go about repairing only sections of a piece!
Hi Yolanda. I would suggest using a Veneer hammer or something simliar to put the [pieces into place them cover with some sort of non stick paper and add a heavy weight on top of the paper. Even a bucket of water works fine and is something I often use myself. Cheers Steve
Same way as shaving comes off a plane or chisel blade. When it curls you'll notice the underside is broken and cracked while the top side remains in tack. Cheers Steve

I now have plane envy
Thanks for the feedback Ray. Don't worry the Plane envy would soon disappear if you had to sharpen them all, there are over 50! lol Cheers Steve

I'm sure you can do it. If the first one doesn't work the 2nd one will. Cheers Steve

Hi Steve, Is there a folluw up on this video, a Pt. 2? I'm intrested in how to veneer over corners and how to get "seemless" corners.
I do cover that in other videos but I'm sorry I can't remember which ones. Cheers Steve

superb!!!
How can fibers be cut only on one side?
Same way as shaving comes off a plane or chisel blade. When it curls you'll notice the underside is broken and cracked while the top side remains in tack. Cheers Steve
This just might be my new hobby. I am starting from knowing next to nothing...
You always say the side that bends easily, but it's actually the opposite side you mark as the glue side?
Hi Matt, The side that is on the outside of the easiest bend is the down side. Cheers Steve
"I like imperial, 'cause they're bigger bits." 😂 Cheeky!
Hi Billie....well they are, lol :) Cheers Steve
Good gob
Thanks. Cheers Steve
Where do I get me one of those sexy camo aprons?
Hi Steven, I make them myself, Actually made the one I have on in this video on a live stream. Somewhere on the channel. Cheers Steve
Yes! This is just what I needed, thanks so much! I couldn’t ask more after freely downloading Woody Hyezmar's Bible, google it, it's still available.
I've successfully used a pair of good scissors to cut veneer...
It will work on some timber but unfortunately not all timber. Cheers Steve
