    Thank you for this step-by-step video! I did not know that houses could expand on their own or into a garden like that from a single plot, was trying to build additional housing plots next to my Fancy Residences to evolve them and ended up just wrecking my neighborhoods. Also the tip for the "theoretical luxury goods" was very useful and left a funny image in my mind, the jewelers simply making jewelry in the shape of an elephant tusk and calling it "ivory" to please the nobles who don't know any better. xD

    • @Blxz
      @Blxz  7 лет назад +3

      David Paul yeah, it's not obvious but can be helpful when planning your layouts. Houses always expand if they need to and if there is space. And remember they can expand over gardens if required.

    Nice guide, I didn’t know about the theoretical luxury goods trick! In a similar vein, you can improve access to multiple food types by setting domestically produced food types to Import to Maintain Zero. This allows bazaar buyers to get the foods from storage yards rather than just granaries.
    One idea for placing the mortuary and senet house is to extend the pavilion intersection by one road tile and connect the undesirable buildings there, out of the way of your precious houses.

    • @Blxz
      @Blxz  7 лет назад +3

      Thanks mate. The actual building of them is pretty easy. In the end the actual challenge is all the stuff you don't see. Getting the goods into position, setting up the industry chains, etc. Each map will have its own challenges but should be easy enough to work around it.

    This old video is awesome! been getting into Pharaoh more and more the last few years, this is the first really good and practical guild I've seen for better housing that's not just some ones massive 20,000 pop mega block. While i appreciate how people have min maxed in reality its nice to have a strategy i don't need 3 spread sheets and a degree in C++ to pull off
    Edit, i thought you had to have plots down for houses to expand, my mind is blown. First guide i've seen point that out i've been trying to fit 4x4s with roads around them.

    • @Blxz
      @Blxz  4 года назад +1

      Glad you find it useful. And yeah, min maxing can be good but it becomes useless once you have to apply that design to all the different maps. Having a design with some leeway allows the player to adjust on the fly for anything in the terrain or design-wise they might wish to work around.

    My question not having anything to do with palatial housing, but is there a way to overcome (or even reverse) the ageing of the population and the constantly growing labour shortage in this game? Only by endlessly expanding the population?

    • @Blxz
      @Blxz  6 лет назад +3

      Immigrants are about the age of 30. You can deliberately devolve housing by removing water access for a while. When you re-evolve the housing the new immigrants will be of working age.

    • @meerkat901
      @meerkat901 6 лет назад +2

      Thanks! Knew it had something to do with bringing in new immigrants, but hadn't thought about using the water supply as a tool later on.

    • @Blxz
      @Blxz  6 лет назад

      No problem. Water is simply the easiest to use since it is the lowest level requirement. You can use anything else as well but they can be more difficult. The other alternative is to simply destroy the buildings and rebuild but that is crossying some imaginary 'too gamey' threshold for me to rationalise.

    • @meerkat901
      @meerkat901 6 лет назад

      I agree. Destroying the residences would feel unrational. Weird thing is that I sometimes had the problem of both unemployment AND labour shortages at the same time for at least six game-calender-months, while all the recruiter guys had access to at least one occupied house. Immigrants weren't moving in because 'supposedly' there was a lack of jobs. No enemy armies were closing in on my city either, and all other ratings were okay. Just only after a while there finally was a sudden, massive influx of immigrants. Maybe a bug? I almost began to think it had to do with some sort of 'underqualification' of the city's population: like building a Library in your upgraded neighbourhood, but 80 percent of the available labour force in the whole city still consisting of Crude hut-dwellers. But I don't think this is a element in the game.

    • @Blxz
      @Blxz  6 лет назад

      No idea. The game has some odd mechanics. Wouldn't surprise me if there was some city mood issue where it only updates every few months.

  • @KedarJoshi070
    @KedarJoshi070 7 лет назад +2

    One question though - when the occupants become nobles, what happens to the workers in that square loop?

    • @Blxz
      @Blxz  7 лет назад +7

      All workers in the city exist in some sort of invisible pool of resources. A single house is enough to provide access to this pool even if the actual population is on the other side of the map. With regards to the noble houses, when they level up the worker pool shrinks but the houses themselves keep providing access to the pool of workers that are being provided by all the other houses in the city.

      @@Blxz I have played this game for 20yrs now, and I never knew this! I've always contructed like little villages for the poor/homeless in areas where it said "Poor access to workers" because I thought there was a walk limit. But if a single house can turn a high unemployment rate to power some far flung industrial estate... Thats a game changer. (I tend to level up too fast and need more and more jobs to fill up the unemployment. These in turn create even more workers! But a single house can help bring it down...)

    • @Blxz
      @Blxz  2 года назад +1

      Food is a good like any other. So low level houses can survive without food as it's not yet become a required good for them. Disease is a problem so I should have apothecaries walking past them. I can use warehouses to 'get' goods from other warehouses amd if they don't share a road connection they will walk directly cross country. The local warehouses can then distribute the required goods themselves without being connected to the main warehouse near the production sites.

    i am curious, how are workers available for services inside the block once all the housing develops into manors and beyond?

    • @Blxz
      @Blxz  5 лет назад

      I've answered in more depth further down the comments but essentially all workers are in a big worker pool. Nobles obviously don't contribute to that pool in terms of numbers. However, to get access to that big citywide pool a building just needs to walk past any inhabited building, even if that building doesn't supply actual workers. Therefore, nobles houses can give access to workers from other parts of the city without supplying any workers themselves.

    • @Blxz
      @Blxz  7 лет назад +1

      Off the top of my head the only slums I have are the housing near the Palatial Estate granary. If you have slum housing making up a significant percentage of your housing then no new people will immigrate. The answer to this is to use housing blocks and to minimise your feeder housing. I suggest you have a watch through of my Pharaoh playlist on my channel to see how I approach each specific mission since there are different techniques for each map.
      TL;DR - keep your slum housing to a minimum.

    • @ZlatkoTheGod
      @ZlatkoTheGod 7 лет назад +2

      Thank you. I guess I'm just having a bit of a problem with deciding how much housing is enough to provide work for a single district as well as with numbers in general (ie. not knowing how much say a reed gatherer creates to know exactly how many papyrus makers to make for maximum efficiency it would be great if there were a list of some sort that stated how many craftsman buildings one unit of a raw material building can supply like the game tels you with the 1 clay pit = 2 potters).
      I suppose I should only place "slum housing" once I have enough people to sustain the percentage.

    • @Blxz
      @Blxz  7 лет назад +5

      The way workers exist in Pharaoh is part of a single massive 'pool'. Every single worker exists in this pool. To access this pool a walker needs to walk past a single house. Therefore even if you have 5 guys living in some slums and 1000 jobs accessing those slums you will be fine IF you have 1000 other workers living somewhere in your city. They don't need to be connected or be anywhere near their workplace, they just need to exist.
      In the tutorial mission here I have a few blocks to the south and north-west. Those are providing all my workers. Then I have one or two houses that then provide magical worker access for all my palatial estates, granaries, warehouses, etc.

      With regards to bazaar options, I am uaing the Cleopatra expansion. No idea if that changed anything but if you are only using the base unpatched version if pharaoh then that might explain some changes.

      If you press the 'r'key you can cycle through and rotate the various decorations for each size.

      I use the square bracket keys to change game speed and I believe page up and down rotate the camera. Not much else I can recall off the top of my head.

    Why do you have all those God things near those mines?

    • @Blxz
      @Blxz  4 года назад

      At a guess I assume you mean shrines? Mines are a good place to put them because they get guaranteed engineer cover and there are typically a lot of small little spaces spare that I can use. The shrines also give a boost to the whole city even if no houses are nearby so it's win/win.

      I can't remember but it is one of the custom maps. Scroll down and near the bottom of the list. Not very helpful but you should be able to find it.

    When laying out your housing blocks.
    1) Tailor the area to the need
    2) Working class neighborhood's only need so much. But they better get what they need. If your workers move out you lose.
    3) High status housing may be needed to meet certain win conditions. And it may look nice. But try to build only the minimum needed.
    4) Overbuilding high status infrastructure can actually hurt in your high status area if that area does not have enough local workforce from a lower class neighborhood. Just keep them separated by some sort of beautification
    5) Compactness helps. The farther your walkers need to go the worse it is.
    I started to play this when it came out circa 2000. And when planning areas sit down with pencil and graph paper.

    • @Blxz
      @Blxz  2 года назад

      Point 4 is blatantly wrong. The city has a global worker pool. There is no such thing as 'local workforce'. If the building can get access to workers at all then they have access to the entire working population. Having a "nearby" worker area separated by beautification is simply an aesthetic choice you appear to like. All the power to you for that but claiming it is a critical point is factually untrue.

      @@Blxz
      Yes you do have a global workers pool. But you also get the "no workers live nearby" iirc. That's part of where compactness comes in. No point in having your delivery men having to travel all the way across the map to deliver a careful to the SY or granaries. Or the same with the bazaar girl getting supplies. One thing I would try to do in the Sandbox mode was to build multiple self sustaining cities not connected by the kingdom road. It didn't always work. But then it's only a game.

      I feel you misunnderstand exactly what I am trying to communicate with this video. But please do whatever works for you. Variety is the spice of life. The "no workers live nearby" comment though does not relate to compactness though.

      Here I went and pre-installed the game on the computer in the home office and it did some wonky stuff. It would keep playing the theme music after you closed the game out. So i uninstalled and tried to rei-install. And fried the DVD-R drive 😖 The CD-ROM is from the original 1999 release (along with my Cleo which would not install). I guess I just might have to get the download from Steam.
