Something people also forget interns of diversity in drawing is age, visible disabilities, body hair (especially on feminine folk), ect, as artist a lot of us learn from drawing models or aesthetic people in general one of the biggest things that changed me as an artist was making a character with a unibrow because looking up references expanded my studies so much.

I haven't finished the video yet, but to answer your first question, my inspiration comes from anime and video games. I really would like to have some kind of animated adaptation made for my characters one day, so my goal is to make a webcomic of some sort.
I really enjoy the topics you talk about in your videos. I can definitely relate to what you were talking about in regards to social media, and I'm not even active anymore (trying to get back as I had taken a break for a few years). I also have characters and stories that I would like to share, but I'm really nervous too. I keep thinking about how to make content, which gets overwhelming, and then I end up not wanting to draw lol

I feel like when I draw I’m not really like feeling like I would myself like I would think is this something I actually want to keep doing or am I just doing it because it’s some thing that the old me was passionate about and then I lost interest in it. But when I pick up a pencil I know that I haven’t lost interest and that it’s just that I don’t know what to do to draw if that makes sense and watching tutorials and stuff really gets me confused because I’m like should I draw in your style? Or a style that I haven’t even developed yet and keep getting angry at because I don’t like it. I’m seeing people draw and I’m like do I draw the face first or the nose first or the eyes and when I post on my Instagram, and I stop posting for awhile, I would feel like I need to post because I need to gain my audience. Like that’s exactly why I got into art, to share a style that can be put into different versions of how people perceive it and to make it meaningful to them.
Anyways, thank you for the ones who read this long comment

you’re good at drawing individual features but i think something that may be holding you back is not starting out with the bigger most important shapes! when drawing even a face you can start with a “gesture” and look at how the entire face is shaped as a whole, once you get the basic shapes you can go in and define individual features and i think you’ll find it helps with proportions and likeness a lot :) i hope this doesn’t come off as rude unsolicited advice your art is great! these are just things that have helped me personally

you opening up and being vulnerable about how toxic and difficult social media is for you as an artist made me feel so less alone in my frustration. i’m just getting into following my dream to be an artist and the constant worrying about social media, staying relevant, the algorithm - as much as it is to some extent necessary - really can be SO discouraging. by the end of the day you’re so exhausted by your constant attempts to be relevant that you kind of forget to draw things for fun. it’s hard!!! but knowing that someone so talented & with so many more followers has the same struggles as someone like me who is just starting…idk it makes me feel like less of an outcast or failure on the art scene. it’s difficult for an artist!!! i guess it always has been and always will be. but we keep creating!!! because that’s what we’re put on this earth to do!
this is the first video of yours i’ve ever watched. i think you’re extremely talented, and very real with the way you explain your feelings. keep drawing and keep your head up!! follow your heart! the algorithm is discouraging but you’re killing it.

I feel like I'm more a character designer because I allways loved to come up with stories and diferent protagonists. Principally eith monsters and creatures, I loce the surrealistic and "out of this world" aspect because you allways can think what you could do to that character. What if it was a bird? What if this alien guy was mixed with a lizard? And etc. Endless possibilities 😊❤

Okay.. such a loaded question lol. Mhnn. How did i decide what kind of art I wanted to make + what style am I drawn too?
The beginning of my art lol: When I first started making art it was simply because I loved the praise I got from being good at it.
While I enjoyed art, I wouldn't draw anything without the intent of showing to someone for some amount of praise lol. I was pretty lonely (on the inside) as a kid, while I was extroverted, inside I felt rlly insecure and incredibly alone. Then after being forced to read as a kid, I found fictional characters I really connected with, they felt so real to me and made me feel less alone. I became obsessed with reading and then in middle school (when webtoons became a thing) I read my first manhwa and also became obsessed lol. It was the first time I had seen anything like it other than anime (while I loved anime/cartoons it seemed so far out of reach to ever make myself and I hadn't opened myself to manga at the time).
The colorful panels and beautiful characters that I could actually see and just take in everything about them (I can't picture images in my head so while I loved reading I had a hard time visualizing scenes somtimes) was so amazing, it totally changed my world. The fact that I could see their expressions/body language, the choice in clothing and how it build their character. The choices in the color palettes and the camera angles used for each panel, how it effects the mood/tone, ugh to see it clearly did so much more for me that I didn't realize I was missing.
(Though one struggle/tidbit, that will always make me appreciate reading is how you can truly be in a characters mind and read their thoughts and gain a level of understanding that difficult to translate visual somtimes.)
Reading Manhwas/webcomics, really put it in my mind that I could make somthing like that too, for myself. However, while I loved reading so many different manhwa, manhua, and manga (later webcomics) a part of my still felt alienated at times and would sometimes struggle to relate to characters or a story. I could never find a perfect fit and that's what has pushed me even more now to make my own webcomic with a being anime/manhwa influence.
    What do I draw/Why do I draw?:
I'm working on making a webcomic/visual novel :). I just want to make a story for myself with my characters and my world. I don't care about how successful it is or have a important lesson/message for those who reads it (kindaish?) any of that is rlly just a bonus. I truly just want to making a story for past and present me to enjoy and cry to lmao. There are too few stories that embody what I can never put to word without a whole novel. I enjoy making art and can push through the hard times because of this goal of mine :')).

  • @Specters0rd
    @Specters0rd Год назад

Yeahhhh... I'm also having an art style crisis. XD It's actually why I'm here lmao. I was thinking maybe just going thru some art RUclips videos will give me some inspo to do something and I think studies will be good idea for me. INCLUDING studying how your art works as well. lol
5:27 Honestly. the moment when I began to direct my attention towards a certain look with my art is when I started "watching draw this in another art style" videos and trying to replicate LavenderTowne's art style. I noticed I like her cartoony yet sketchy style and eventually went from there. I tend to go with the flow a lot of the time while still keeping some kind of idea (basically I hone in one idea I got from Pinterest and kind let my sub-conscious add in a few things here in there). Which is good when you wanna take a day for yourself to draw whatever you want, but trying to improve on more clear cut components (aka the fundamentals) and impostors syndrome it's kind of making me scared to experiment like I used to do. Not to mention that trying to gain a following and make art my career is making it hard to do anything right now if that makes sense.

I feel exactly like this, an anxiety to draw because if I’m not good enough I won’t be proud or happy of my work, and social media interactions with it don’t help those feelings (especially when you’re not getting any lol)
I lack motivation so hard, skills are there, I’ve got the tools, but the motivation is completely gone
I watch “draw with me” videos to motivate me because it feels like someone is drawing in the room with me and I’d feel like I’m letting them down if I’m not working hard/drawing as well. I love having your drawing videos on because your art is so amazing and I love hearing your honesty as well as your voice!
Recreating an environment that you have had to draw in before should hell your motivation (setting your room up like a class room, having others in the room, listening to someone talking)
I hope this helps, you’re amazing, I love your work so much, please keep going!

the feeling youre talking about may be related to or may very well be "executive dysfunction". as someone with an ADHD brain i suffer from it multiple times a day everyday, and it has greatly affected my consistency with creating art. if you find this to be a chronic issue, id recommend looking more into executive dysfunction or talking to your doctor because it can often be a fixable issue!

These studies look absolutely gorgeous; I enjoy hearing your process, and knowing what’s been going on with your art lately! I’ve never been directly inspired by any sort of creator or genre, which meant my art style developed naturally over the years and changed as my visual library and preferences grew. Only recently have I settled on a goal, which is to design characters for horror/ high fantasy themed things. I think it’s important to keep in mind that having an “art style crisis” is perfectly normal, and that consistency is a double edged sword. Redrawing old art could help you apply your realism knowledge with your more exaggerated style; going back to the things that made you want to draw in the first place can be a great reminder of what you want to achieve as well. Whatever you do, I know you’ll be able to get through this! Stay strong! 🥰✨

I related to so many points in your video, from the art style crisis to the social media rant!
I’ve started drawing when I discovered manga, so even til this day my art is quite influenced by anime/manga. Most people tell me that my style is also very focused on shapes, especially angular ones, while still having a sense of "volume". And thinking about it, it does make sense when you look at artists that I like, such as Leyendecker.
I'm at a point where I don't feel confident in my art anymore, and I want to push/experiment even more with it (which I'm starting to do, like you with studies).
But then comes social media, and having to constantly create content for it, and not being able to "take a break" to just focus on improving my art at my own pace. My experience with social media has been detrimental, especially for the past few months, so I had to establish boundaries. Even tho I might lose my "audience", at least I'll be in a better space mentally and hopefully artistically. Also, I remember watching this video talking about how creative people don't need an "audience" but actually need a "community", and honestly social media platforms have lost this sense of "community" over the past years with their messed up algorithms.
Anyway, wow, I think this is the longest comment I've ever written in my life haha
All of this to say, that I relate to what you're going through, and thank you for sharing your thoughts with us and showing that we're not alone in this! Your art is absolutely amazing! Wish you all the best~! ✨

I have been thinking about my art style too lately. I want to tell stories and illustrate them so I'm stuck between a simple style that I'll use a lot (in comics for exemple) or painting style for single illustration. With anime influence and Instagram artist influence I don't really know which side I should lean towards. But it's okay, it means that your artistic knowledge is improving and your hands have a harder time keeping up. It gets better with time and more drawing!❤️

I honestly stopped bothering my social media years ago and I enjoy the process of making art more. I don't have the pressure to get something done fast to post, so when I do eventually finish a piece it feels more rewarding. Back then I'd get into a cycle where I noticed mistakes I made after posting and would feel awful about it. Now I'm way more positive about the art I finish(me actually liking my art? I thought it was impossible). Ngl I miss the positives of putting my art out there, and I built a little reputation offline that keeps commissions coming without having to post anything, but I don't know how to find a balance between the social media grind and an enjoyable art schedule without the pressure that comes with it.

Sometimes the feeling of wanting feels better than the actual receiving of something. Did I do it?

I remember seeing Loish (I think that’s their name??) post a study of this on instagram, I’m so glad I get to see you recreate the painting and that I know the name for me to try it myself :D
Beware the extremely long edit 😳
Edit: you asked what we like to draw and why, for the longest while I’ve loved character art but I honestly think it was just because that was an easy way to supply myself with art of hot people. However, it has helped me find my style in my new art love, which is graphic design (specifically book covers and posters). I still love drawing characters, but book covers, posters, and graphic design in general are really a mix of everything that I enjoy from writing to character art to problem solving and so much more. My style in design is still new and not yet developed considering how new I am to it, but I truly do see a future for myself here and I love all there is to it already.
(PS- I’m still young, only 15 and in high school, but this period in my life is meant for passionate exploration. Everything I say about what I love and why is subject to change, but no matter what changes it’s still beautiful and significant. I’m loving myself and what I do for the first time in my life thanks to my art, and I thank you and other artists like you for providing inspiration to young people like me.)

thats extremely good that you've already been exposed to how your interests in art can change and you might take a different path. for a lot of artists like myself, thats something we struggle to come to terms with in college. many people are stuck trying to aim for a specific career but then we're taught to follow our passion instead of a career, so good for you!

Holy crap, I’ve been having an art style crisis too recently! It’s like I want an anime yet realistic approach but at the same time a simplistic approach? I dont know what to do other than practice 🥲
