My No1 pick would be Handbrake. They also have a CLI version.
I absolutely agree. Handbrake is the best free video converter available, but it may be a bit complicated for some.
Converting via VLC or Movie Player generates huge files... which I then compress using Handbrake!!!
Handbrake is my go to as well
Handbrake.
Great video - again - would like one on Compressor please - it’s always seemed complex or non intuitive Thx. JPMusic
I’m still using handbrake and it’s great
Your ability to time-travel back to when you were a newbie is true sci-fi. Great teaching.
Good advice as ever... But the best video conversion tool is Handbrake.
the beginning taught me so much, im moving videos to Mega and i noticed some mov files still played while others would just download back to my computer, so i was gearing up to convert all mov videos just because they were mov
Once again you have taught an old dog a new trick! Thank you Sir! 😎👍🏼🥰
Always useful to have choices. Handbrake is my go to.
With Smart Converter you can go into its settings menu and untick the “send to TV app”. That way any converted files won’t automatically be sent to AppleTV app.
Another free app that I use mainly to compress video is Handbrake. It just works like magic that compresses videos to 80-90% of their size
Handbrake is the one to use.
Thanks for mentioning the delays with VLC. Used to wonder if it was just slow on my own Mac.
Holy crap you still make videos. I keep watching old ones from 8 years ago!
bookmarking this. Fantastically useful stuff.
A very useful and informative and interesting video tutorial today! Thank you, Gary!👏🏻❤️
Fabulous information! Love the way you explain things so clearly and that you give the reasons for something being like it is - it really helps with understanding what the solution is 😊
Finally a complete guide for conversion! Thank you very much, you made everything clear for me.
Thanks a lot, helpful
Im also using right click>code video, but your tutorial was great, as usualy. Thanx Garry!
Always helpful. Thanks.
Thanks very much, Gary, for this informative video! Video File conversion in a nutshell.
Very informative tutorial. Many thanks!
Thanks for the excellent explanations. I learned a lot and will continue to follow macmost.
new knowledge gain again, thank you Gary!
Thank you for your help 😊
Thanks Gary.
Brilliant - thanks a million, million
Thanks. Best ever
Thank you for excellent content!!! You should make video of Photos app, how to reduce local database size and how to move photos from iCloud to local database etc.
I have made many that cover those things. Here's the whole Photos/photography playlist: ruclips.net/p/PL1bsBsPtN-9TdvkV1bUHUcw0q485JMmhZ
A good free app that lets you batch-convert a bunch of video files is GoPro player. I downloaded it (free for anyone, don't need to buy a GoPro) and honestly I don't use it for its intended purpose- I edit my GoPro clips with iMovie or Final Cut. However, the batch-convert feature is pretty good. It is also necessary if you have a 360 camera, it converts the panoramic 'fish eye' image into a regular-looking clip that you can then edit in iMovie.
......why no mention of Handbrake ....?
I try to avoid third-party tools, particularly ones outside of the App Store, when possible. If you use Handbrake, then good. So you don't need this video at all.
@@macmost OH ! Ok, fair enough...Thanks, Gary !
Great video once again. Gary, could you make video about wav and mp3? Example, easy to trim wav compare the opposite with mp3.

@@macmost 👍👍👍👍👍 I knew you are the one
Hi Gary ! Thanks for this video. It is very enlightening indeed 🙂
Is there a way to convert a batch of videos in VLC ?
I think so. Not sure of the steps. Play around with it and see.
.movpkg conversion?
Thanks Gary. I have gigabytes of family videos that are all in an AVI format. Quick time doesn’t run it. iMovie doesn’t run it. I just want to do some simple editing like cutting and pasting. What should I use for my M1 Mac air to do this?
Try VLC. If it works, then convert them all so you have them for the future without the need for conversion.
This is all very informative and thank you very much but my problem right now that I am trying to solve is how can I get or is there something that Apple has that I can take a video from RUclips and strip and get the audio out of it?
There's a lot of steps there. First, you need to get the video from RUclips. Problems with that right away as you've got copyright issues... See what that creator makes available as far as downloads.
@@macmost OK thanks very much for the fast come back....
Simple, iTube Studio lets you download YT videos as a video download or as .mp3 files. HTH!
In real time? Just set your phone next to your laptop and record with voice recorder the audio coming from the video. Easy.
I didn't know I could use quick time to convert videos. The problem I have is when I screen record, it can add up gigabytes of data quickly in the movie file. I think I can use QuickTime to compress it or reduce it down to 720p or 1080p to make the files smaller. The question I have, is there a way to screen video record in a lower resolution so the file is not so big and I wont have to convert it to make it smaller?
Not with the build-in function. But third-party recorders might. Lots to think about as you usually don't want to record the screen at a lower resolution. But it depends on your use case. Like are you recording to make a tutorial or send a report into tech help or a beta test?
Right-clicking the file in Finder and selecting Encode Selected Video File... should also work without using Quicktime. Do you know if there are any cautions with that other than that you're not playing in Quicktime? I guess you could QuickLook to ensure you've got the correct file.
A big caution is that it may not work at all. That is an old Automator workflow made for a version of OS X a long time back. Plenty of reports of it not working. But if you get OK results and test your video file afterwards, then no harm in using it.
@@macmost Thanks. I didn't know the history behind that.
Will this method work for converting a RUclips video to an MP4 file to save on my MacBook?
No, you'd first need to get a copy of the video. The proper way is to ask the creator for a copy.
What about HandBrake
Do you use it? Good third-party tool, but I wanted to avoid such things in this video.
Can I use Compressor to convert my DVD library to .MOV?
I don't think so. People use Handbrake for that, usually.
Does anyone know why .avi files are no longer supported by any Apple apps, including QuickTime Player. It is a real pain because many medical apps still save all their output as .avi files.
I don't think AVI was ever supported. Perhaps you had an app or extension before that allowed you to view them. Either way, use VLC or Handbrake to view or convert them.
Can you now do audio files? I have a bunch of WMA files that I want to convert back to mp3 and i can't for the life of my figure out how to do it on mac without an additional program.
You will probably need a third-party app for that, in order to handle the WMA files.
@@macmost Is there one you'd recommend?
@@doomque Sorry, no, I don't have a need to play WMA files so I don't have a recommendation there.
How can I Reference to another apple numbers file?
You can't. Build a document with multiple sheets and reference the tables across the sheets.
Hi, sorry if I jump in out of the video contest, I am looking for an IOS APP to control (not only screen mirroring) my iPhone from my Macbook Pro. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.
You don't need an app for that. Just use AirPlay. See ruclips.net/video/Az6Bql4afkk/видео.html
@@macmost Thanks for this information. I know your video, I follow you ever. But I need to have the interactive screen of my iPhone in a small part of the monitor of my Macbook Pro (with 2 monitors) with ability to interact with iPhone using Mac mouse in this small part of screen. For ex.: my iPhone is on other room and I can navigate over the iPhone App from my MacBook. Hope to be clear. 🙂
@@robertotamburello2093 You can have your iPhone in a small window by using QuickTime Player and starting a recording of the screen (but don't actually start the recording). But you can control it with your mouse, it would need its own mouse. Hard to suggest more without knowing what you are really trying to do -- why have your iPhone in another room, for instance?
I can't watch some of the videos on Twitter & that seems to be because the are in HEVC format. I have the 2020 27inch mac running Sonoma 14.5. Is there an easy way to just click on them and watch.
Not sure what you mean. Watching video on a web site should mean it is in streaming format and should work anywhere. If you can't watch a video someone posts to a social media site, then it could be a bug with the site or a problem with what the person posted. I don't think it is an HEVC issue.
@@macmost Thanks for the reply but it is on Twitter & Facebook & only certain videos. When I click on it, you just get a circle as it tries to load. I can't watch the same videos on my ipad pro M! 11inch either. Appears to be a problem others have had too so I guess it is back to google & hoping to find an answer. Love your tutorials & thank you for them.
@@abicat6158 Yes, sounds like an issue with those videos or sites. Nothing to do with HEVC.
@@macmost Thanks
If you have Handbrake and VLC you can do almost anything.,.
Why doesn't Apple just use the extension .mp4 and/or use that format?
It does in some cases. I haven't thought of their reasoning for the use of m4v, mov and mp4, but I'm sure there is one.
quicktime sucks I use vlc it is more reliable, and does more files. Quicktime feels they could of expanded but like anything a major corp takes over eg microsoft with skype. I use Adapter App for convert
Handbrake all the way!!!!
"Covert" video 😂
Huh?
