my Q5 55TFSIe gets me 35-55Km in range, depending on weather and driving style! This is painful on anything more than city drives, as frankly makes no sense to stop and charge in mid-way on a long motorway drive. The X5 would definitely make more sense and give me more boot space for the longer drives with family. I forgot to add, that most of the time 66% of my driving is electric only. Only during holiday seasons or weekend jaunts out of town will switch this so 66% petrol.
Well.... the 21mile typical range of my XC90 sounds not much, but is surprisingly useful. I drive 17,000m/year so pretty much every day. So the first 365*21= 7,600m each year are on plug-in electric. That’s getting on for half my millage. And that’s at half the cost/mile of petrol. Because I’m either driving around town -or- long-haul, if the plug-in electric mileage were, say, 50 miles then all that would do is mean I go further on the long-hauls before it flips to petrol. BTW, a full charge of my XC90 from a 13amp plug takes 3 hours, not the 5 hours you found.
We are on our second XC90 T8 R Design (2020). The car is a big improvement on our previous 2017 XC90 T8, with a longer range, 20+miles and better fuel economy at 43 mpg (after 6000 miles). Our current car has the Polestar upgrade which makes a surprising difference to power (408ps), handling, and steering feel. This is a very comfortable place to be, as the car has all options (the B+W is well worth the extra money) - the seats are superb (as are all Volvo seats). Our family of 6, with the youngest being 17 love the extra space available, even in the 3rd row. Overall great car - watch out for pre-registered demo's at reduced prices.
I have purchased a BMW 45e and it is just fantastic in the real world - it handles great in all conditions; the electric mode does all the around town running at zero cost; and once on the motorway the petrol engine just flys; if you don't need 7 seats then this is the best all-round SUV to use on a day to day basis
Just bought the 2021 BMW X5 xDrive after investigating for some time and test driving multiple vehicles in the same segment. I can say that it’s an amazing ride with a fabulous tech and a well crafted interior. The 3rd row is not as bad as they make it sound but it’s not your daily 7 seater vehicle either.
@@adamjen7703 what’s different about it? The “old” car he’s referring to was the 2015 platform that was launched after the success of the 12 years of the previous model. Therefore it’s essentially a 5 year old car competing with a brand new x5.

First time for Volvo- it has firmer suspension than the BMW, and it is presented as a minus to the Volvo! What about the overall design and complexity - once you hit 80k miles your BMW will need a lot more in service and maintenance, did they ever fix the window regulators falling apart? What about the door handles breaking off, so far X5 has not impressed me at all, but a 15 year old XC90, with 7 seats and over 200k miles keeps running strong with little to no maintenance needed, (breaks tires and oil) is this the case with the T8?
I would like to know how efficient these cars on a long highway trips, where battery charge is not so important, but energy management (like recuperation, electric motor acceleration, power split between petrol and electric engine) are critical.
Yeah, often overlooked in these reviews. These reviews tend to be tailored towards customers that either lease or change cars as soon as warranty expires. If you wish to buy and keep your car beyond warranty Volvo is a clear winner. It's still not a cheap car to own but the BMW will set you back a fair bit more when you hit a snag out of warranty (as is the case for all german premium brands).
X5 has a range above anything else...........erm what about the Merc GLE 300DE. The Merc on paper has a bigger electric range, is perhaps down on performance but is still real world fast, and more economical when the batteries are depleted. The Merc also allows rapid charging cutting the charge time massively. Worth a shout I would say.
I found it odd you didn't address the adaptive suspension other than just casually mentioning it in the end. In the X5 you can lower and elevate your ride height by several centimeters as it has an air suspension.

Nonsense remark on airco usage on Volvo. Airco works instantly and via voice command you can lower very easily. You can even start your cooling via the app remotely...
We bought an XC90 T8 2016 in December 2019. It's been great, we live in Seattle (moved from the UK then) so having the battery for short trips works for us. The beauty of our car is that we got the dealer to fully upgrade everything to 2020 spec, it now has the latest pilot assist (which is genuinely brilliant on the motorway or in traffic). The infotainment criticism is probably valid compared to a newer alternative, but compared to other cars from the year ours was made, it's way better. But, I don't really get the climate complaints, why do you have the climate turned off when you get in? You just get in and it starts working to reduce the temp... With the app (standard on a new car) you can control the climate before you get to the car too. Our journeys are either very short (battery), or on the highway, so a PHEV works for us.
Indeed, it should have been mentioned. That being said, the 2.0 diesel is not a match for the 3.0, nor is the agility. So, all in all, I think that the bmw is the better choice.

The batteries should charge, when you are using the petrol engine to move- heavy duty alternator plus inverter? then you could charge as you move, also regen braking should be available, to re-charge batteries. All old tech, so why isnt it on the very latest models?
On balance I think the Mercedes GLE hybrid is a good choice for this type of car. A claimed electric only range of around 60 miles and a Diesel engine to haul it around when the batteries are depleted.
Looks like the X5 comes top, but the Volvo has been available for a few years and a full EV and updated battery pack is on the near horizon for the XC. Would be interested in a comparison of the new Jag Hybrid just released.
Not getting why the tester is getting into the Volvo climate sub-menu. The system is always on; fan speed is auto. You only need to select temperature. AC is auto on off. Also, Volvo allows you to fully charge the battery while driving, and you don’t always need to plug in. I believe the BMW requires plug in. Both have regenerative charging.
Once the battery is drain after driving the whole day. The electric motor won't give you that horsepower any more. It makes it feel that you only have limited superpower for maybe 2 hours after that is all down hill. Do correct me if I'm wrong?
That is incorrect. There's always power coming from the electric motor even at 0% battery (it's not really 0%, just 0% usable for pure EV driving). The gas engine is always supplying electricity to the battery/electric motor which is then used to drive the rear wheels in the XC90. It's the same for pretty much every PHEV. Once battery hits 0%, it acts exactly like a traditional hybrid (gas/electric motors working together for total power output).
We own an x5 45e at home, it is the better car compared to an xc90 t8, we test drove an xc90 and it just doesn't drive as well as the bmw does, and in the bmw you will get an inline 6 what should be normal by an suv of this size. And at the end, an xc90 has almost the same interior as an v60 does. It just doesn't give you that premium feeling. and an extra, the bmw is faster on the autobahn because the electric engine keeps going as well. By the volvo xc90 the electric engine turns off at 180 km/h which is just a shame.
The electric motor only turns off if you are doing pure EV driving. If in hybrid mode you'll get both gas engine and electric motor running together at higher speeds. But lets be honest, how often do you drive that fast (180km/h or above)?
In Volvo's defense, you can use the app to precondition the vehicle before you even get in it. It's like saying that Teslas have no climate control buttons. Blackberry said the same thing about the iPhone having no physical QWERTY keyboard. Who is laughing now? It's a minimalist design guys.
Volvo is much better, T8 engine with 430hp and a 4.9 second 0-60mph. Plus Volvo is way more reliable and comfortable, it’s Also much better quality then Bmw, trust me I have both
Real world temps above 60 F 42 miles for my Rav 4 Prime with 18 kWh battery Winter driving I have achieved 35 miles of range Toyota has a much more efficient system assuming the BMW battery is 6 kWh bigger and real world range is less.
So VW's was fined 800bn squarks for lying about its NOX emissions, but it's ok for 2.4ton BMW X5 to say it gets 240mpg. And be, somehow, cheaper to run than my real world 1.2ton Fiesta getting 51mpg? Am I missing something to government policy?
Companies don't claim anything themselves, they simply report the results of the mandated tests, however inaccurate the tests may be. VW were fined because they engineered the cars to recognise when they were being tested and adjust the performance to artificially improve their MPG for the duration of the test.
@@Dyrck we all know what the reasons are. But where vw cheated a bit on a test, all car manufacturers are now given the cheat codes (add half a ton of battery and motor) and told to make hay. Then our governments tax them like they're more efficient than a vw up!
You fail to mention there is a difference in the x5 europe model vs the same us model. The x5 rates 54 miles on an electric charge. In the us its only 30 miles. Also the us version on petrol is 20 mile mpg while your is 25 mpg. Just saying
volvo xc90 t8 recharge is absolute garbage. gas itself goes 20~21 miles , electric range 15miles Volvo website states mpg combined +50miles , which is a lie.. a scam the car cost almost 80k.. ridiculous I'd rather take toyota rav4 hybrid
Just to correct the reviewer's statement. You don't need to touch the center screen menus for temperature control on the XC90: JUST USE the voice command function, say "temperature xx" and it changes the settings immediately without needing to touch the menus. I use it all the time.
Let’s face it, a huge consideration will be image. On the one hand you have ‘class and sophistication’, the other you have ‘brash yob’! Now I’ve just px’d my diesel 69 reg XC90 for the new XC90 T8, so despite being an uncouth yob I can at least carry on pretending to possess the finer qualities of a typical Volvo driver.
Can't compare the comfort of Volvo XC 90 with R type and no air suspension option with the BMW X5 45E. It should be compared with T8 inscription with 4 corner air suspension and the bower and wilkins 1800 W sterio system is far superior to the 205 W BMW audio system. I drive over 50K/ year and driver's display is so overrated, I have over 10,000 hours of videos/audio and just use bluetooth for entertainment (including TV and sport broadcast) and google map...so, the car's display size is just a nuissance....it cost less than $10 for phone/pad holder....at any location in the vehicle.
yes let's compare the most expensive audio OPTION from volvo to the BASE audio from BMW ... that makes alot of sense. might aswell go for the Bowers and wilkins diamond audio system for the BMW. and yes the volvo screens are very laggy so they are a nuissance.
32.5 miles from a 24 kwh battery is rubbish, here are two reasons why: My current 330e has a 12 kwh battery and does about 24 miles real world, half the battery size but 3/4 of the range, I've had up to 34 miles on a good day and as low as 18 miles in bad conditions. My previous car was a 2014 Nissan Leaf also with a 24 kwh battery (yes I know it's very different but we're talking about efficiency) and that did a real world 100 miles range. I know the X5 is very nice, but it does 1.3 miles per kwh, while the 330e does 2.0 miles per kwh, and the Leaf did 4.1 miles per kwh. And when the battery runs out on the X5 I bet the mpg is shocking too.
The x5 interior is basically the same as a 3 series....... literally identical. Tor that price you kind of expect something more unique rather than just better quality materials. At least with the XC 90 there are some subtle difference to the S60 and S90.
Nice review, very detailed 👍🏽 Im quet impres about Volvo, becouse you compared car what cost about 40.000€-45.000€ and 70.000€-90.000€ (im talk about used car in my country) ofcourse BMW is better but hey, the price is much higher than a Volvo.
Still amazed how often this reviewer doesn't say what you can control in the infotainment via the steering wheel or voice control, the latter being a breeze with Volvo voice control with 1 click on the steering wheel.
The air con is only annoying on the XC if you don't know what you're doing! Takes no longer than a car with horrible buttons and dials everyhwere, also... the XC90 would already be cooled as I can control it from my phone!
I think people only consider the EV range (which really in most cases don't even save any money, as 10 hours of electricity to get less than 20 miles and ends up costing the same as equivalent cost in gas), but I think of PHEV as getting the MHEV mpg (even with the additional weight) with the considerably higher HP and acceleration. Thus, XC90 wins out over BMW because it has 18.5 gal fuel tank and I can go over 500 miles without needing to fill up. Again, the electric range means nothing to me, as I plan to only drive in hybrid mode. The fuel tank size of BMW is way too small and the overall range is less than 300 miles. Of course, neither of these can compare to the new RAV 4 Prime XSE , but these two are a bit larger. We are thinking of replacing our Lexus IS 250 and Mercedes ML 250 (Diesel with over 700 miles range, but getting old now) with RAV 4 XSE prime and XC90...we make multitudes of 1K+ long trips and pure EVs would be hell for us...with the need for 30 min to hour re-charge every 2-3 hours. (With the headache of no service, exiting off the highway to find the place and long wait to fill up.) Of course, I would only get the RAV 4 XSE with premium options and XC90 with four corner air suspension and 1800+W Bowers and Wilkins....The XC 90 easily wins out because of the range and XC90 Inscription with less than 20" tires and air suspension has a smoother ride than BMW.....no, way would I ever consider the R model anyway. Can't compare the comfort with the R sport model. R sport model is made for Racetrack/NASCAR fanatics (they probably also opt for 20+inch tires) and I'm sure it provides the same back breaking comfort as the BMW M models.
Is a claimed 54-mile range enough to make you consider a PHEV? 🤔

All the Volvo fan boys spitting out their Latte all over their knitted beige cardigans and cords
😂 gold
What about the driving gloves ??😂
Calm down , calm down darlings it’s only a joke !
Looks like the X5 comes top, but the Volvo has been available for a few years and a full EV and updated battery pack is on the near horizon for the XC. Would be interested in a comparison of the new Jag Hybrid just released.
The new XC90 is coming out later this year
what about the price of those two as tested?
Not getting why the tester is getting into the Volvo climate sub-menu. The system is always on; fan speed is auto. You only need to select temperature. AC is auto on off. Also, Volvo allows you to fully charge the battery while driving, and you don’t always need to plug in. I believe the BMW requires plug in. Both have regenerative charging.
Great review tho please mention exterior styling more especially on your magazines
You've got eyes, you can judge it, do you need someone else to do it for you?
@@DanLMH that’s a bit harsh, but, hey!🤣🤣🤣
@@DanLMH jeez calm down I'm just saying the review would be more interesting to hear opinions of it. Take Carwow for example
What about the Mercedes GLE 350e? surely that's the most obvious direct comparison for the X5
X5 for me but why on earth did BMW fit it with a max charge rate of 3.5kwh when the i3 and i8 is higher?
All phev vehicles have a maximum charge rate of 16 amps.
Unless you have pre heat, you can't jump in any car and be toasty warm.
X5 definitely the winner here
True
XC90 climate control turns on and puts the window down from outside the car with the key fob. You just didn't know all the features.
🤔 this xc90 old 2015 vs..BMW 2021?
On a hot day you can set the parking climate via your Volvo on Call app, so not an issue. Coming from an S90 owner.
X5🔝
What is price of the x5
@@slandshark almost every day
In Volvo's defense, you can use the app to precondition the vehicle before you even get in it. It's like saying that Teslas have no climate control buttons. Blackberry said the same thing about the iPhone having no physical QWERTY keyboard. Who is laughing now? It's a minimalist design guys.
You can do that on the X5 too.
Cost for both is silly in the UK .
yay calming music!!!
2:19 why don’t you just tell the car what temperature you want or use the app to cool I before you get in?
On the X5 you can set the car to pre condition via the phone app.
Just got an xc90 t8 recharge company car. I have 4 kids so I need 7 seats. And I need à hybrid for tax reasons
Volvo is much better,
T8 engine with 430hp and a 4.9 second 0-60mph. Plus Volvo is way more reliable and comfortable, it’s Also much better quality then Bmw, trust me I have both
Man, where's the Merc GLE 350de? XC 90 is a sad joke. You're test comparison is not complete without GLE PHEV
Id take the xc60 polestar. More speed, and power, aswell as better looking. I know its a bit smaller but still.
good luck finding one - and when you find it compare it to an M5 or something in it's category.
Real world temps above 60 F 42 miles for my Rav 4 Prime with 18 kWh battery
Winter driving I have achieved 35 miles of range
Toyota has a much more efficient system assuming the BMW battery is 6 kWh bigger and real world range is less.
🤣 - You can't compare the RAV 4 with the Beemer 45e or Volvo XC90 i am sorry. The two latter are in a completely different league.
@@pigeonpoo1823 I agree, the process is seriously flawed.
You fail to mention there is a difference in the x5 europe model vs the same us model. The x5 rates 54 miles on an electric charge. In the us its only 30 miles. Also the us version on petrol is 20 mile mpg while your is 25 mpg. Just saying
BMW website says electric range is 30 miles.
Was this a Comparison video or a BMW X5 Promo?
I have to agree. I kept wincing during this review
As my grandfather used to say , “BMW is the most over rated car brand in the world “. Very biased one sided review
volvo xc90 t8 recharge is absolute garbage. gas itself goes 20~21 miles , electric range 15miles
Volvo website states mpg combined +50miles , which is a lie.. a scam
the car cost almost 80k.. ridiculous
I'd rather take toyota rav4 hybrid
Not impressed with the BMW EV range. I can do easily 28 miles on my wife's Outlander phev and it's only 11kw battery.
Do you guys get the limited capacity battery like the US? I get 80-85km electrical range easily. (50+ miles)
32.5 miles from a 24 kwh battery is rubbish, here are two reasons why:
My current 330e has a 12 kwh battery and does about 24 miles real world, half the battery size but 3/4 of the range, I've had up to 34 miles on a good day and as low as 18 miles in bad conditions.
Mpg was 25, it's in the video. Nothing shocking about it.
Both are excellent vehicles. I stand by my comment by actually buying both.
X5!!!!
The x5 interior is basically the same as a 3 series....... literally identical. Tor that price you kind of expect something more unique rather than just better quality materials. At least with the XC 90 there are some subtle difference to the S60 and S90.
No its not!!!! X5 interior is much much more luxury and bigger in all aspects (i have both cars).....
I like my AC on the dash Volvo did a wonderful job
It does from my experience on average around 30 miles on the battery.
Still amazed how often this reviewer doesn't say what you can control in the infotainment via the steering wheel or voice control, the latter being a breeze with Volvo voice control with 1 click on the steering wheel.
I love and own both BMWs and Volvos, but my family always rolls in the Volvo. It’s just that safety factor that is unrivaled in the Volvo.
Want 7 seats? XC90
Want best ev range? X5
You can just use voice control e.g. I am cold to control the temperature on XC90. The XC90 ice house power should be over 320.
You are high if you think the BMW has a better info Center
Right? I thought exactly the same...
In the Volvo, just talk to the car and ask to drop the temperature.
You make it sound so hard to change the temperature on the xc90 come on give it a bit of praise 😂
BMW for me
My X5 45e
The air con is only annoying on the XC if you don't know what you're doing! Takes no longer than a car with horrible buttons and dials everyhwere, also... the XC90 would already be cooled as I can control it from my phone!
BMW, the ultimate driving machine ♥️🔥
X5 every time
I think people only consider the EV range (which really in most cases don't even save any money, as 10 hours of electricity to get less than 20 miles and ends up costing the same as equivalent cost in gas), but I think of PHEV as getting the MHEV mpg (even with the additional weight) with the considerably higher HP and acceleration.
